Disney Vacation (3 Viewers)

Got back yesterday and now I need a vacation from my vacation. This was a great time to go to the parks, but the weather was not as cooperative as I would have liked it. Stayed off site at the Westgate which was very nice and was about twenty minutes from the Disney complex. There was a Wal-Mart right up the road (on Turkey Lake Rd) where we stocked up on food.

Monday was a great day. Went to MK and the place was empty. Managed to do everything that we wanted to between 12-7. I had not been to the Park since the Fastpass went into effect and I loved it. If you know what you are doing and manage the times, you can get into the top rides really easily and if you plan to be near a ride when you can get a new Fastpass, it is possible to have three fastpasses rotating for the whole day, especially if you fastpass the busy rides first. Had reservations at Ohana for Monday night and I have to say that everything that Yankee23fan said was absolutely correct. Thanks for the heads up on the place. Seated quickly and ate and ate and ate. I had the meat sweats after pounding countless pieces of turkey and pork. The only thing that may be a turn-off for some is that the place is kid friendly...there is a floor show were kids get up and sing/limbo/march around. When it first happened I was skeptical, but quickly found myself enjoying it. To top off the experience, the place is cheap. Dinner was $27, I had four double Bombay and tonics and my companion had two pineapple drinks served in an actual hollowed out pineapple. Spent 54$ on dinner and $52 on drinks. I kept wondering what a similar dinner would have cost in the City. Then went back to MK to watch the fireworks, which were very well done. There is something about seeing the Castle lit up with the fireworks going on behind it that makes everyone reminisce about what it was like to be a little kid.

Tuesday we went to Epcot. The Orange version of Mission: Space was intense. For those of you who have done it, do you know . Test Track was a blast. My girl is not a big fan of fast rides, but she claimed this was her favorite thing that we did the whole trip. Through fastpass we managed to ride three times and enjoyed it more and more. Managed to get halfway around the countries before Reflections started which I thought was a very nice light show. Different than MK, but still very nice.

Wednesday we went to the Animal Kingdom. I had never been here and I thought that it was comparable to some of the best zoos around. The safari adventure is excellent and I am amazed that they managed to have their animals actually out it environments that no one would ever think cordoned the animals into a specific space. I hate cages and the Disney presentation is amazing. Bug's life is great for kids and Dinosaur is very intense for an inside track ride. I did not go on Everest (caused a bone of contention because someone got cold feet), but it looked like a fairly standard coaster. (However, if you are going to Disney for roller coasters, you are doing something wrong.) The park closed at 7, so we went back to the room and I made dinner.

Thursday we went back to the Magic Kingdom to hit rides that we wanted to go on again. Fairly standard day (I got to go on the Haunted Mansion twice more, for a total of four times...it is still my favorite ride), but one word of caution. We made reservations at the Crystal Palace when we arrived at the Park because neither of us felt like cooking. When we got there at 8:45, we had to wait for 30 minutes before we were seated. I had realized that it was a buffet, but the buffet was far away from the bulk of the seating, there seemed to be too few servers just to bring drinks (non-alcoholic in the Magic Kingdom) and the place was over run with crying kids. She and I looked at each other and left. Went home and ordered Pizza Hut. Pizza Hut is as awesome in Orlando as it is everywhere else.

Friday we took a day off, but had a couple of adventures none the less. Our suite overlooked a lake. I got the idea that it would be fun to make lunch, rest a kayak and go eat out on the lake. I had kayaked before, but she hadn't. There was a small island that we rowed over to and I noticed that the lake was starting to get choppy. As I look up, the GF queries, "was that thunder?" Over to the west, the sky is black and I can see lightning. I start paddling pell-mell back to the dock and manage to pull up just as the skies open. We have to huddle in the rental shack for twenty minutes until the storms pass. As Florida weather is wont to do, it clears up and she and I decide to go to the Disney Boardwalk. Wander around for a little bit and then see a sign for miniature golf. If you play miniature golf for fun, DO NOT go to the fairways course. This course is a nightmare. First off, it's twelve bucks, which seems a little expensive for mini golf. Secondly, the par is 61 and the course is 1445 feet, or about the length of a par 5 on a normal golf course. Thirdly, there are numerous places where if you mi#### your ball you might as well pick up your ball and take a 6. There is nothing on the scorecard about picking up your ball and moving it a clublength from an obstacle. Because the course is faux grass over concrete, you cannot stop your ball on a downslope. Had I gone with me or a friend, we might have been up for the challenge. With a girlfriend who doesn't golf and me, who can read greens about as well as I read Sanskrit, by the ninth hole we were ready to use the putters on each other instead of the ball. But, because the course is so long there is no easy way to quit. So, I got the great idea to cut out towards Hollywood studios. I thought Disney would make it easy, but they don't want you to go off the beaten path. I eventually had to cut through the bushes to get back to a parking lot for the Swan Hotel. After this I needed a drink, so we wen to the Big River Grille and Brew House which makes its own beers. They did a pretty good job and managed to put a nice ending on an interesting day. (I'd steer clear of their quesidillas, pretty meh.)

Saturday was our last full day and we went back to Epcot. I am proud to say that we managed to go on exactly one ride; Finding Nemo. After this we had reservations at The Coral Reef. Absolutely outstanding...I may have liked it even better than Ohana. I had asked right when they opened to have a seat by the aquarium and was given a table two feet away from the windows. While the view was great, the food was even better. I highly recommend the Creamy Lobster Soup. I had the Catfish (which is raised at Disney and I had probably saw swimming around on Tuesday) wich was amazing and she picked the Crab Legs which were very well done. We decided to skip dessert to save room for a Mickey ice cream. Total was a touch over $100, still really affordable. My companion had two glasses of wine and was feeling tipsy. I wanted to catch up so we went into the countries so I could have a drink or two. Epcot makes getting drunk really, really fun. I wandered from Canada to Mexico, drinking along the way. By the time we each got a Margarita, we were stumbling, smiling and singing. We used our fastpass, got into Test Track and promptly were told that there was inclement weather. So, we wandered out of Epcot, I drove home and we wrapped up our Disney vacation.

Thanks for all the advice, this thread made the trip a lot more fun.

We leave in 2 days for our first stay as DVC members. We'll be at the Boardwalk Villas.

Used the Dining plan in the past, but I've decided against it this trip. I don't really care for the changes they made to it this year. That and I don't want to pay adult dining plan price for my 10 year old picky eater. I still made ADRs at Ohana, Whispering Canyon, and Coral Reef (our 3 favorite places) as well as a character breakfast. I may end up paying more out of pocket over the Dining Plan, but I prefer the flexibility of ordering an appetizer if I want, splitting a dessert, etc... and not tempted to just ordering the most expensive thing on the menu to take full advantage of the Dining Plan even if I'd rather order something else.

Whats the best value in Disney passes? Anyone buy the Sea World/Busch Gardens passes?

We want to do Magic Kingdom, a zoo, Sea World, Busch Gardens and a water park, don't care which one. I'm thinking we'd be better off just buying day passes to MK and the hopper pass that Sea World/Busch Gardens has.

Tips? Advice? Thoughts?

Disney World: Obesity Lives Here

Wrapping up my family trip here and I've come to realize I can live with the costs, the grueling heat and the lines, but what really gets me is when I get stuck trying to maneuver around a family of 4 with a combined weight of 1,000 lbs. It was gay days this week and I think I would rather my kids see that way of life than the way of life which includes chowing on a gigantic $6.50 turkey leg while you waddle your way to Splash Mountain as you carry a ginormous Coke under the other arm like a football. I can only imagine how the foreigners must chuckle at the size of the average American waist when they see us visiting their countries.

We are heading to Orlando this weekend. We are using the meal plan and have our reservations all set for the table meals. What are the best spots to hit for counter service in each park? Also, anything that qualifies as a snack that might be better than a water or ice cream bar?

Any ideas guys?

This thread seems to be the closest we have to an official Disney thread so I'll ask my question here. What time of year has the smallest crowd at Disney World? I went last year in October and though some locals told me it wasn't bad I thought it was packed. I'm thinking about a return trip in January. Would this be the best time?

A lot of information here. There is a calendar someplace that shows day by day, but I cannot locate it right now.tips

I've been there during business conferences in January many times - I'm no expert on the entire operations like many here seem to be(I can barely tolerate the place) - but one thing that may fool you basing your trip during January and lower crowd numbers is that I've noticed that they aren't operating the rides at full capacity. On Space Mountain for example only one side is sending out cars, so while you are faced with a smaller number of people the waits for them sometimes aren't optimal. When I'm in the parks in January it is nice to not have to dodge as many people and your kid can get a decent seat for the parades.

The last couple of times we went we had really good luck with the crowds.

The first time was in early October. The week before the 3 day Columbus day weekend was great. the week of the the holiday is packed.

We also wen the last week in Feb and had very little in the line of crowds.

I haven't been during these times but I heard the week before Thanksgiving week and the the 2nd week in Jan are pretty good also.

Do you have the answers to the questions from the book so we can see the rest of the site?
Excluding chapter titles and numbers, what is the first word printed in the text at the top of page 71?

As in the week of Thanksgiving? That was another option so the kids wouldn't miss as much school. We got there on Columbus day weekend last year and I didn't realize it was a holiday.

We've been twice in the last 4 years, once in Sept(2004) & once in January(2008) & I thought the September crowd was much lighter. The locals we talked to in 2004 said it was because of school being back in, which is sort of the theory I used this year, right after Christmas break.

The January crowd size wasn't bad, but more than I expected it to be. You'll never see me down there from Feb-Aug.

Nope, I don't have the book. The last time I used that site you could search without limits. I guess that has changed.

I was just there last week for 8 days, I'll post more later, but both Universal parks are good and go see Blue Man Group if you can,AWESOME show...  :lmao:

second weekend of september.Go then. Thank me later. Enjoy the free dining plan.I will probably walk past you at some point.

Bumping this for our trip in late September. It will just be myself (28) & my husband (29), no kids and we are trying to figure out what package to go with. Since they changed their dining plans, they now offer a standard and deluxe. We will be there for 7 days and I have been 3 other times but he has never been and I'm trying to decide which (if any) meal plan to get. Apparently with the regular dining plan you get one table meal and one quick service meals, tax & gratuity are excluded but with the deluxe plan, everything is included up to 3 meals with no limits on what type or where. Has anyone used the deluxe one this year? The regular plan is about $500 and the deluxe is about $800. I am figuring that we will want to do the nicest restaurants for dinner every night but there are so many options I'm lost!!!

I do know we will definitely be going to Ohana but that's all I have so far, lol.

Planning for next years Disney Trip has begun. We'll probably go in October. I have a couple questions for the Disney Experts.

Last year we stayed at the pop century resort. It was ok but I would like to try one of the moderate resorts this year. What would the best be? Is there one that has better (read shorter) bus service to the parks? Also quiet is good. Are any of the value resorts better as far as transportation?

Also has anyone stayed at the resort and then spent a couple days at Universal? Wife and I went to Universal in California many years ago beofre kids and enjoyed it and thought the kids may like a day or two of that.

We went in mid June stayed at the All-Star Sports Resort. I liked it because when the shuttle came in we were always first on and first off. All-Star Sports is the first resort in that area. It was not bad on the noise level. We stayed in the back of the resort so the walk was long to the front but we did not have the big pool parties at night to deal with from the patrons using the MAIN pool. The ride to the parks was 15 minutes or less so not to long either.

The All Star Sports is essentially the same as the Pop Century. I think Mimo was asking for a move up, not just a lateral move. I stayed at the Pot Orleans a while ago and I thought it was nice and it was also very quiet. One advantage is that there is a boat to transport you to Disney Village and I think Epcot in addition to the buses, however I do not see this listed on the website any longer.

Will be there Sept 17. Goodtimes.
Do you go like twice a year or something?
Usually. This was the first year with only 1 trip in awhile.
Wow and I was trying to be funny. Where do you stay?
Pop most of the time. Old Key West last time. Port Orleans a few times.
We've stayed at pop century once. How would you compare it to the other 2?

I don't like any of the values as far as transportation goes. My favorite moderate is Port Orleans French Qtr or Riverside. The transportation there isn't great either. It's quiet, beautiful, and a great food court.

Old Key West is our favorite place, but Pop might be second. It's very kid friendly, the food court is good and the bus system is perfect. The busses in All Stars are either one bus for all stops or different busses for different stops so that there is never a set to it. Pop is one shot even though the hotel is huge.Port Orleans is nice and clean and fun, but we really don't like the food there and it just isn't THAT much better then Pop to make us go there unless the deal is great.

If you want to upgrade from the values, I can give you another alternative.Try to buy a DVC members points for a place like Old Key West or Sarratoga. You will find that if you can find the setup with a seller it's just as cheap as the moderates, but you get a ton more for your money.

Team is correct. POFQ or POR are the best moderate resorts for transportation. POFQ is usually a first pick up, first drop off, which is key if you have a large group or kids with a stroller. Last year over NYE we stayed at the Swan. The weather really screwed us because it was record cold temps at night (low of 27 one night), so we didn't get to check out the whole resort. It's a little pricier than the moderate resorts, but they do have deals. You can also take a boat launch to Downtown Disney from either resort. That's a nice touch as you won't need to be on a bus.

Have a trip booked over Christmas for us and in-laws. Staying at Coronodo. Booked in the spring and got a nice suprise a few weeks ago when our travel agent called us to give us about 25% back as Disney dropped their prices during the time we are going.

My daughter just turned 12 - and at say 9-12 age time frame she has always liked Universal more than Disney World. I go to DW/Orlando annually or more for meetings/shows - most of the time at the Swan or off campus. The trip to Universal is easy and there is a lot more fun going on inside - it is the beer for sale IMO - nothing takes the edge off of whining kids like a cold beer, much easier to tune them out. The Hulk, Mummy, Shrek, Shipwreck Falls and other rides are super rides. They also do a Fright night around Halloween that is supposed to be good - so if you are going in Oct. you should look into it.

Back from another fun week. Rained one day and only for a little while. O'hana changed their menu slightly but it might be even better. Good times once again.

Any of you FBG DVC owners excited about and/or adding on points at Bay Lake Towers @ Contemporary?

I was really excited about the rumor because of the location, but now that it's official and pictures & points charts have been released, I'm kind of bummed. It's just a typical high rise luxury hotel.... with very little typical Disney themeing. And the points to stay there are ridiculous!

I'm much more excited about the remodeling/reopening of the Tree House Villas as DVC properties.

A Word About Pictures in Disney:

you will be given a "credit card" that allows you to access all of the pictures that the Disney photographers take of you. These photographers are everywhere in the parks and all you have to do is hand them your card and they'll take a picture for you.

This "credit card" works anywhere, at any kiosk, in DisneyWorld and will allow you to access the entire library of photos from your vacation.

If you take advantage of all the photo-ops, you can accumulate a large number of photos and at the end of your trip buy a CD with every photo you've had taken (for about $100).

We didn't realize this and only had about 20 photos taken. We only liked about 8 of them so those were what we purchased... and it was still $65 for the 8 or so (though they were printed photos, not just .jpgs on a disc).

Had we known the $100 CD was available, we'd have stopped a few more times and let them take a few more photos. It would have made buying the whole CD worth it.

Yeah, Disney Photopass. A must if you are a picture hawk.
