Dissecting An Early Trade... (1 Viewer)

I love football for its own sake, but would really like to win one FF championship

I have one main money league with other serious football fans, and some other leagues, but there is the one league I would like to win a championship.

Unfortunately, I did not take the draft seriously enough, which I often do and which always ends up being my bane.

I did a couple things in this year's auction draft that could resemble a "strategy": bit to the hilt on ADP (won that), follow up with one major "get", a QB or WR. I hoped for Moss as the WR, backed down, but then went for Peyton Manning and got him.

I immediately had buyers' remorse. After spending high on ADP and Manning I had little left at WR - Edwards, Roy Williams, + filler - and RB2 - Ray Rice, Moreno, Wells.

So I tossed out Manning as trade bait to see what I would get. Among other offers I was sent this: Rivers, Steve Smith and Marshawn Lynch.

And I jumped (before he could withdraw the foolish offer, I thought). I thought, hey, Rivers IS Manning in terms of their 2008 numbers, Manning and the Colts lost their HC, OC & DC, + Marvin Harrison. And Lynch is a beast. And SSmith is consistent, brilliant, a point scorer, a play maker. A QB1, a legit RB1-2, and a WR1 all in one package, and I took it.

Now I'm wondering. I'm 1-2 having lost two games by just less than 8 points each. I'm pretty convinced looking at the numbers that if I had stuck with Manning I'd be 3-0 by now. Other thoughts:

- Manning ALWAYS stays healthy the WHOLE season.

- Manning's schedule is better. This I knew.

- Manning has games like he had vs the Cards while Rivers' numbers I think were skewed by one huge game he had last year.

- Lynch suspended - what if while he was out Fred Jackson would excel and lay claim to the starting job? Didn't think of that. - Also, for some reason Buffalo can just never gets its offense right.

- SSmith - It's weird, because if someone had asked me I would have said Delhomme was and is cooked as of last year and after his surgery. But somehow I didn't connect that to Smith. Last night told me that I made a big mistake. Carolina appears to be tanking and Delhomme can't get the ball to Smith.

I feel like I've been schooled, and there I was thinking I was the school-er. I've made some other moves during the season and so maybe I will recover, but I'm feeling pretty beat right now.

Sure hope these guys recover.

Don't give up hope.

It looks like he caught you with perfect timing and big names. Always think twice, then 3 times. Then walk away and think again before pulling any move. It's unlikely that it will be off the table upon your return. Good luck, it hurts now but it might not be a season ender.

Not that you're asking, but I'd say it was a good trade for you. For one top tier QB, you got what figures to be a top tier qb, wr, and 13 game top tier rb. Its always easy to look back and say, I shouldn't have made that trade, but you did make the right decision IMO.

I don't know about that. Lynch is surely in an RBBC of some form now. So I'd look at it like is Smith + Rivers > Manning? Doubt it, but even if so, given how well Peyton is going right now I'd hold out for more.

What I was trying to say is that when the trade happend, before the season started, it was a good trade for him.

i like the trade, its only 3 games in. with that lineup you will recover. esp when lynch is full speeed

I like the trade for you.
Agreed. Even now, I think you got the better end. Rivers will start tossing TDs, which will put his value a lot closer to Manning's. Smiff is still a target hog, and Lynch is still the starter. Too early to be calling it a failure.

I am 3-0 with ADP and Rivers.....You have much better backup RB's than me. I might be a little stronger at WR than you, but S. Smith squared ain't bad.

Sometimes you can make the right decision, and things still work out poorly.

I started ADP over Lynell Hamilton this week. In my league, Lynell scored more. Does that mean I made the wrong decision? Heck no! I could never say I would go back and change the lineup.

Same here. You made a good trade. It might still work out, it might not. But it was a solid trade no matter how you look at it. Don't beat yourself up.
