DJ Williams (1 Viewer)

that writer sounds truly clueless....comparing what DJ has done to Vilma isnt even close to fair....DJ will be playing his THIRD position in 4 years....sounds like Shanny has no reservations about him adjusting from what I read

While this is a columnist piece and not beat writer discussion, these are all issues that Cecil Lammey and Sigmund Bloom and Sean Baca had concerns with when the switch was made and have continued to note all offseason long -- Williams struggling to grasp the MLB position, concerns that he doesn't have the mean streak many MLB have, etc. Some of those issues can be coached and learned, the instinctual things obviously cannot.

Sig and Cecil also strongly feel that Williams will not be moved from the MLB position -- it's his. They're closer to the situation, but I completely agree. If they haven't moved Williams by now, they're pretty unlikely to given the injuries on the strong side.

There are a lot of factors here, as Keg noted, DJ in a new spot, the entire defensive line turned over, new scheme, etc. DJ may take a bit to get going, but he's extremely unlikely to move and the tackles will be there in this scheme. Temper your expectations a bit, but Williams will be a LB2 at worst.

anyone think that the donkeys would have interest in the recently released trotter so he could play MLB and DJ could slide back over to the SAM?

I know Keg was trying to be silly with the Trotter/spoiler post, but it's worth considering. I don't see Trotter as a good fit in the Bronco scheme -- too much sideline-to-sideline expectation for a player of Trotter's skill set and knees.Marshall could fit if the Broncos see him as a MLB. All signs point to the Broncos committing to DJ for 2007 however.

Your prolly right Jean ... however they continue to struggle stopping the run, they may explore other options.

Way too early to give up on the experiment. I'm still high on DJ. But I've always liked Webster. One thing to mention is that what DJ has been accused of lacking (mean streak) is exactly what Webster has. Webster is small, but certainly plays with a mean streak. Having said that, I expect Williams to do well before it's all said and done.

If you can catch a Broncos game from the preseason, watch to see if he takes even one step toward the line of scrimmage. He does not have the instincts to play anything but OLB (probably SLB). Good LBs attack!

i take this with the same breath with the news of jesse chatman possibly overtaking ronnie brown. purely motivational-prolly sent down from shanahan himself to be leaked out.

DJ should be OK, contingent on how well the DL does in front of him...

i haven't played LB so don't have direct experience, but sam cowart had to change from one position to the other (which direction escapes me at the moment) when he went from bills to jets, & he described how it was a big adjustment for him viewing the unfolding play from the perspective of outside in as opposed to inside out... & cowart was at one time a borderline pro bowl caliber talent, before a torn achilles robbed him of his explosiveness...

williams was the only prep player madden ever saw that he said could have gone directly to the NFL if it had been allowed...

I saw that Williams had a decent tackle total in last night's game. I didn't get to see it and the only thing I can find on the web is this:

5. D.J. in the middle: New middle linebacker D.J. Williams appeared to be out of alignment on the first play, but he seemed to be near the ball a lot more Saturday night than he was in the first two games.
http://www.denverpost.com/search/ci_6722162Can anyone shed any light on this? Does it look like he's coming around?

He does but looks a little tentative, has trouble keeping blockers(even TE's) off of him but will get better.

Now that he's on my team, I focused a lot on DJ while watching the Broncos/Browns game. I've never played or coached at any level, but it seemed pretty obvious to me that he's still learning the position. I saw him make a couple of nice plays and I saw him look out of position and/or taking bad angles to the ball.

That said, I think if you focus on almost any player in that front 7 they're going to look kind of bad. They are really struggling as a unit against the run right now.

I was spying him as well. He was very inconsistent. I agree he's learning but it would be difficult to gauge his progress since I hadn't paid attention to him previously to notice any difference. I'll keep an eye on him Thursday. What I saw.

Bad angles, over running plays, but good lateral movement and pop when he had a bee line. He can fend off blockers but he didn't stand out as a good looking Mike but he was active and in on many tackles.

D. J. hasn't done much since he came into the league but he has been at Sam so the hype of him getting moved inside really caught my eye. The early reports have not been good and when the media out here begin with whispers of Trotter, etc, their typically is some smoke. Right now I would say he'll win the starter job by default and that he'll rack up lots of tackles.

The reason isn't becaue of D. J. being a stud Mike but because the Denver starting D-Line is undersized and gets pushed back lots. Dumervill is a great pass rusher, his low center of gravity, only 5'11, allows him to get underneath the pad level of OLTs he's squared up againts but he constantly gets shoved back on running plays. I saw D. J. getting plenty of scraps when the back would turn inside after the OLT would push back Elvis.

Right now D. J. is pretty raw but he could accumulate lots of tackles over the year. Prolly more of a solid FF IDP than a solid NFL Mike IMHO but he should be starting and he'll get lots of tackle opportunities even if he can't covert them all due to his learning curve.

Jes my Humble-O.

EDIT: UNDERSIZED on the EDGES not at DT where they have BEHOMOTH DTs in Sam Adams/etc. :P

He looks a bit like Deshaun Foster on defense, lots of sidestepping. The best Mikes will recognize the hole fast and put their hat on it.

I still think he'll be fine. He's probably still "thinking'' a bit too much still rather than reacting at the new position.
