Alright, slightly click bait-y. My vertigo resolved through physical therapy.

But during the course of treatment one of several specialists I saw early on wanted to clean up the excess build up of wax in my outer ear canal. Seemed perfectly reasonable, been a good 12-15 years, knock yourself out.

He did such a thorough job, it’s been bothering me ever since. Like any time cerumen - the naturally occurring yellowish secretion that protects the skin of the ear canal - begins to start flowing (or whatever it does), it bugs the crap out of me. I’m constantly tugging at my ears or trying to gently clean with Q-tips. It’s freaking ridiculous. This has been going on for a good six months.

Anybody wise have an ongoing issue with ear wax making you uncomfortable like this?

It’s not really impacting my quality of life in any way. My ears are “popped” today, affecting my hearing somewhat. But the main thing is just this mild discomfort which leads me to constantly rub around the canal opening or tug at my ear in order to try to become comfortable again.

It is a bit hard to articulate but its this annoying thing that I’m conscious of daily.

In early 2008 I had an acute vestibular infection (aka severe inner ear infection.) It caused somewhat permanent vertigo bc it left behind crystal deposits - layman terns, I may technically incorrect - and I had “relearn” the balance function of my new normal. I cannot spin around - no more salsa or tango for me. Mostly it is fine. But last year in an exercise class, we did these extreme dips to the side, holding the position. Threw me off….took months of PT to get back to normally functioning balance.

Vertigo is no longer an issue for me but if you have questions I could share more details.

I try and wash my ears with a less mosisturizing soap and rinse with hot water always. A couple times a week I put peroxide in ears and rinse out. Any idea if there is any harm from the peroxide? Learned the peroxide as a home remedy for earache from my ex...Seems to moderately to nicely work.

I did have a bout of vertigo for a few days that went away before I broke down and went to a doctor.

Giod call on this. Actually my fiancée - who gets mad when I don’t listen to her but then a friend suggests the sane thing so I try it    - does this 1-2 a week. I’ll give it a shot.

Contemplating wearing a cone around my neck so I’ll remember to quit ####### around with them. Def brought this in myself but it’s just weird, have never had it be a constant annoyance.

I’ve had some experience with what you describe but no where near as what you went through. Sorry you’ve had to go through all of that.

I just recently had a ear tube that was put in my ear 30 years ago removed. The ENT guesses that it must have fell out and got lodged in my ear. A polyp developed around it and I was constantly getting ear drainage. Ear drops would make it stop but it would come back. Once he figured out what was going on he removed the ancient military issued ear tube and problem was resolved. But I would get bad vertigo if I blew my nose real hard and my ear popped.

A few weeks later I got my all my hearing back. Although I did lose my once beloved superpower of being able to lay my good ear down on a pillow and not hear anything.

So I’ve now realized I made this entire post about me when I actually meant to say- Maybe there’s something still in there. Let another ENT give it a look?

thanks for sharing.

I’d actually forgotten this detail….at one point they sent me to this specialist in the Bronx for specific testing. I forget the name of it but the procedure was to blow alternating cold and warm air into my ears. each blast was 30-45 seconds. while that was going on they were video taping my pupils (I was wearing something that looked like VR goggles.)

that test was brutal! each step made me increasingly nauseous. in the beginning I would need 15-30 seconds to recover. by the end I needed like five minutes before I would let them start again. I sat in the waiting room for a good 30-40 minute afterward bc I could barely walk. I was that nauseous and it made my vertigo that bad.

thinking back now I’m wondering if there is causation there. either way I probably need to go see the ENT again after my honeymoon.

I had a bad case of vertigo a couple years ago.  The doctor cleaned my ears of wax and the vertigo became more manageable.  But the wax is building up in my right ear.  My left ear has a tube inserted and the wax is less aggressive there.

How to use hydrogen peroxide to remove earwax

Many solutions contain hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide helps the wax bubble up and results in the wax becoming softer. Debrox and Murine are two common eardrop brands.

Here’s a general approach to using eardrops:

Lie down on your side. One ear should face up.

Administer the instructed number of drops into your ear canal and fill it with fluid.

Keep still for 5 minutes.

Sit up after 5 minutes, and blot the outer ear with a tissue to absorb any liquid that comes out.

Repeat this process for your other ear.

Be sure to follow the directions on the eardrop package. You may need to administer the drops more than once per day or over the course of several days.

You can also make your own eardrop solution at home. You can create a solution with a 1-1 ratio of water and vinegar, or just use drops of hydrogen peroxide. Consult your doctor before trying these homemade methods.

right ear is killing me tonight

getting married 6/25 & want to put off going to the doc until after the 4th (post honeymoon)

any temp home remedies? or just try the warm water / peroxide thing?

Debrox is magic. Get it. I’ve had wax issues my entire life, and pretty sure vertigo as well. Sometimes feel shaky getting up, blood work is fine so doc thinks vertigo. It sucks.

I had one completely plugged up not too long ago to the point where I could barely hear from it.They just irrigated mine with lukewarm water shot through a spray bottle until it all broke loose and flushed out. I just had to hold a plastic cup to catch the run off while the nurse practitioner just kept shooting water in there. Took a couple of minutes.

My only vertigo-ish experience was due to my seasonal allergies hitting a little early and I stopped taking a daily claritin because I ran out and it wasn’t allergy season. I wasn’t feeling stuffed up yet or anything, but it totally  gave me the spins every timed I  moved my head. They told me to start up the claritin and gave me a prescription for meclizine (sooooo disappointed to find out mescaline and meclizine ar entities the same thing….)

Anyway, within two days of starting up the Claritin all the symptoms were gone. Now I take Claritin year-round.

How to use dynamite to remove earwax:

- go thru the train tunnell unless it's just been painted on the side of a mountain

- continue until you reach the Acme Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic

- buy two sticks of kablooey from Dr. W. E. Coyote

- stick them in your ears, light the fuses and start to run

- keep running til you are about 20 feet past the edge of a cliff

- turn and look bemusedly back at us but keep moving your feet so you wont drop immediately

- start to move you hands to stick your fingers in your ears then realize how silly that you forgot there's dynamite in them

- stop moving your feet and position your body to leave a nice outline in the canyon below. good luck!

Wife just got diagnosed with peripheral vertigo and eustachian tube dysfunction. She said it’s miserable.
When I had my bout of vertigo last winter I’d say it was super mild. Ever been on a boat all day in choppy waves, and when you hit the shoreline you feel like you’re still rocking? That. 24/7. I could function.

In 2008, it was acute. Lying down, the room was spinning all the time. Or I’d shift and I’m hitting a high speed coaster hill….but they never stop coming. Walking was crazy - I looked like a 95 year old man, shuffling along in 6-12” steps. Lived in a first floor apt, which was good. Stairs or standing on a subway platform felt like battling a suicide attempt.

The best part was these were secondary issues. I had an undiagnosed disease that was wreaking havoc with my GI. Chronic fatigue, never had a normal BM. 5 months long; the vertigo was concurrent a couple months toward the end.

Went to eleven specialists, including an infectious disease specialist from the CDC. My GP and gastroenterologist would do biweekly conference calls with all of them trying to figure it out. Eliminated a log of diseases, never did figure it out.

My employer fired me because I couldn’t execute my duties as VP of Finance. Thanks!

Eventually I started working with a nutritionist, trying different diets. Kale cured me. #truestory I eat it every day now.

Every few years I’ll run into one of those specialists at events, the theatre, or whilst visiting folks at a hospital. It’s like a running gag that’s not super funny. “Crazy, eh? Sometimes medicine if more art than science!”

Had a terrible night. Right ear is sensitive and in pain. Trying to flush but nothing working rn. Might have to go see a doctor sooner rather than later.

had 4 bouts with this over the past decade ... each one an absolute mind eraser.

unfathomable dizziness, projectile vomiting - which lasts for at least 6 hours, if mercy is shown.

worst was roughly 5 years ago (May '17) - got up around 6 a.m., and felt the dizzys creeping in ... attempted a shower at 7 a.m., but was propped up against the wall the whole time - hugged the bannister the whole way downstairs, got dressed.

there was an Urgent Care facility 2 blocks from me, which opened at 8 a.m., so off i went - hadn't started puking yet, but i knew it was coming.

leaned against the buildings as i made my way down the 2 blocks, but then i had to cross the Blvd - longest 15 seconds of my life - i then stumbled into the UC, and the receptionist didn't know whether to #### or shine shoes - she asked what was wrong as i fell (literally) into a chair, and i just yelled "HUHHHH??!?"

they got me in, and as i waiting for the atrending physician, the puking commenced - they give you the airline bags to hurl into, and by the time the doc got there i had filled up a dozen, and was still going strong.

everything was moving a million mph, closing my eyes made it worse - head started pounding, so i left my shades on ... my bp, which is regularly quite normal, was 160/95 ... i was a right mess.

the doc took one look at all this and turned white as a ghost - she was sure i was presenting a major cardiac episode (dizzy, vomiting, unsteady/high bp) and said there was nothing she could do there, as i continued filling the puke bags like water balloons.

they summoned an ambulance toot sweet, as the staff queried me on next of kin, emergency contact, etc ... i kept insisting it was NOT a cardiac problem, but they were having none of it.

i was strapped into the gurney, and whisked to the ER, which was only 10 blocks away ... EKG showed no episodic issue, blood work was taken as i continued to hurl (yes, nothing left down the innards, but somehow i still found some gush).

i explained to the doc that i have had issues similar to this - they spiked me, and he hooked me up to bag of Meclazine for what was a 2 hr drip ... blood work returned during that time, and confirmed what the EKG said - no heart issue at all.

took the dizziness a solid 5 hours to wear off ... i laid propped up halfway in the bed, as it was the best middle ground i could find ... they drew the curtain and shut the light - i just lay there zombified until the all clear was given.

upon discharge i was referred to a crack ENT, who was assuredly gonna get to the bottom of this ... went to see him ONCE, and within 5 minutes he told me it was neurological, then fobbed me off to a dome doc.

it wasn't.

so it's been 3 years since last bout with this ####, and that last one was just as bad as the one that landed me in the ER, but i rode it out at home, as i now know the drill ... i did get Meclazine prescribed, but i never took it, i just kept it around as "in case of emergency, break glass" kinda thing.

it's horrific to ge through. case closed.

getting married 6/25 & want to put off going to the doc until after the 4th (post honeymoon)
Congrats on the impending nuptials!

Can't imagine what a severe case of vertigo would be like.  Think I have a mild case that's more annoying than anything else.  I tend to feel like I'm going to lose my balance when I'm someplace that heights are involved (hiking, etc.).  Also if I'm driving and if I turn my head to look out the driver's or passenger's side windows and then turn my head back to the windshield, I feel like I'm about to lose control of the car at times.  That one kind of definitely sucks.

I've had that happen twice, @otb_lifer.  Both were due to ear infections.  First time I was a teen working the register at a camping store.  Standing there ringing someone out and then it was like a light switch.  Just suddenly dizzy and wanting to puke.  Ran to the office and found a trash can.  I was nowhere near as extreme as your case, but man does it suck.  Laying in bed and move my head an inch or two the wrong way and I'm ralphin.

Second time was in Air Force boot camp.  I knew what it was so I was able to get to the doc before it got horrible.  They got me on antibiotics right away and doc scraped the living hell out of my ear, but aside from some slight sea sickness feelings, I was ok to press on.  It's a ####ty thing to experience - its amazing how exhausting it can be.

@Ned

ooofff ... yeah, worst thing is that )at least for my epidodes) nothing portends it - it does feel like a switch is thrown, then life as you know it just gets launched into a zone that's indescribably wretched.

the other sympton i had, which i left out earlier - and also made the UC doc #### Twinkies, was the profuse sweating ... drenched, as if i wandered into a car wash ... it was the Monday after the Derby, so was early May, and not really hot at all - but, man, was i wet - jeez.

and ya can't close your eyes - that just ups the misery ante 20x ... so, during my last episode, i just laid on the bathroom floor, puking into the tub (hey, i needed a big target) - once i emptied the guts, i went into the bedroom (it's en suite), and tried to rest - but i couldn't jibe closing my eyes without the heaves coming back ... never got one wink of rest.

i didn't feel right for a solid week - you nailed it with the exhaustion comment - felt like i went 20 rds with a circa '86 Tyson, then thrown down 20 flights of stairs, then beaten head to toe with an aluminum bat ... then toe to head for good measure.

that ENT doc had me do the Epley, and one other test, before he quickly surmised it was not the ear (BPPV/Meniere's) afficting me ... i passed all of his aural benchmarks just fine.

now i sit here wondering if/when it'll rear again ... the thought of it occurring anywhere but the comfort of home, which has been the only stroke of luck for me with it thus far, is chilling.

best to you ✌️

manageable. less pain tonight, in part bc I took pain killers so I could sleep. insomnia has other plans tho…. gonna start Claritin in the morning bc I do have been symptoms I’ve been battling the past week or so.

just trying to get healthy for the wedding & honeymoon rn. if I still feel crappy Sunday I’ll maybe hit the ER at the VA after church.

thankfully no vertigo for awhile. just have to be careful about how I exercise or (uniquely bc of my case 14 years ago) I can trigger it and throw myself off. overall it’s just something to manage, NBD.

def hitting the ER first thing in the morning, I can’t make it to Monday

my ear is killing me (inflamed, sensitive to the touch) - for sure there is some kind of infection.  thankfully no other symptoms rn.

probably just need amoxicillin or some kind of antibiotic. should knock it out in a day or two.

Can't say I suffered from vertigo but about 15 years ago it seemed like any kind of exertion (even just laughing hard) or being upside down would result in me feeling huge pressure in my head and sometimes I would nearly pass out. After seeing some doctors I had a tube put in my left ear and about 3 years later a tube was put in my right as well. The symptoms went away and eventually the tubes came out, though the holes remain.

My problem now is that I'm very susceptible to ear infections, especially in my left ear (I have one right now). I see an ENT twice a year for check ups and to vaccum out any excess wax (i can't flush them out anymore because of the holes).

Wife just got diagnosed with peripheral vertigo and eustachian tube dysfunction. She said it’s miserable.
i’ve had this for 25 years.  in aboot a month i will be getting the fairly new ET dilation procedure, which is actually covered by my insurance.  anything is better than a 25 year ear ache and tube i suppose.

Happy freaking Father’s Day.

Started out my day in the VA ER for six hours. Good news is I’m in the mend.

I have a hard wax buildup, on both side. Probably have an infection on the right side, very painful. They cleaned out both sides. Did some hearing tests with a tuning fork. I’m about 70-80% deaf rn lol. Tried to look at the inner ear canal but the inflammation prevented them from getting a good look. But no other symptoms other than pain management.

Gave me two kinds drops for the R ear - an antibiotic (ofloxacin) and a steroid (prednisolond), and peroxide solution for the L ear. Normal treatment would be 10 days of but since I’m getting married Saturday we’ll do 17 days. Will revisit after the 4th.

Should be fine. Bummer of a day but in the end all good things.

Here’s to a good recovery, and congrats on the wedding!

OK my health is an actual concern now.

I've been on antibiotics & steroid for 36 hours and I'm not getting better.

The infection in my R ear has spread to the L ear. I can barely hear at all in my R ear and my L ear keeps getting worse. With over the ear headphones on and volume all the way up (which is way too loud when my hearing is normal) I can barely have a phone conversation. It’s like listening to tv normal volume but I’m 80 feet away. My heads under water and someone is talking and I’m guessing half the words.

I'm in constant pain and cycling through acetaminophen & taking 1500 mg like 4-6 hours. That can’t be good for my liver, eh.

Back to the hospital today. I am NOT getting better. Getting married in 105 hours, this not good.

Geese, hope they figure it out asap. I know, easy for me to say, but yeah acetaminophen not good. Try to get off of. I was eating that stuff due to a bout of mono years ago and did some damage to my liver.

I have occasional bouts of vertigo, which is a problem since I spend a good chunk of my workday on ladders, but I know it’s an issue in my right ear specifically, and I know what type of movements set it off. It’s also just a dizzy spell lasting about 2-3 seconds, but boy does that room spin when it happens.

I also have a hearing aid for said right ear, which I got last October, once I found out that the ear is functional, but just not very strong(I can make out about a third of the words on a hearing test with it by itself), and I had an issue with the aid not working very well suddenly. I had a previous aid conk out a few months ago, and I’ve been very careful to not get too sweaty with it, and I figured this was just some type of sinus congestion. Took some OTC meds, peroxide, the whole gamut, still not working properly, but I put it up to my good ear, and it’s still functional. Finally I get the idea to see if I have any of these little white filters that can be replaced, and I do, and lo and behold, it works again!

I guess the good news is I don’t have any other symptoms - figure out this one, and I should be good.

What was going on in the R ear has now spread to the L ear. I’m not a doctor, but does that sound like a buildup of hard wax?

My lymph nodes are swollen, both inner canals have inflammation, outer ear is sensitive to touch. Clearly I have an infection. The droplets antibiotic isn’t working. I don’t know, maybe try some amoxicillin or some kind of oral antibiotics since the one you gave me in ear drop form ISN’T DOING JACK.

More art than science.

You sure are testing the "in sickness and health" clause before the wedding.

Also you're setting up the long play on why you didn't catch something your future spouse told you.

More art than science.
They call it practicing medicine for a reason.

Your mouth, jaw and ears are more symbiotic than most people realize; as a hail mary you might want to see a dentist.

Seriously good luck! This must be extremely stressful, especially with the timing. Prayers are being sent for you.

You’re on to me. This has all been an elaborate ruse to tee up a classic Friday thread.

You might be on to something WRT it being dental related. Or. I might be desperate. I’ll bring it at the ER.

OK nuts but I’ve actually figured out a temporary fix that’s working now.

So when I hold the iPhone speaker of the phone to my ear, can barely hear anything. If it’s 3-4 inches away I can’t detect any sound. Over-the-ear headphones, very muffled, sounds very far away.

However if I put the end of the phone right in front of my ear - say like the back of my mouth - very clear.

So there’s a little life hack for you just in case your ear ever stops working.

Maybe bring out the big boy antibiotics? Hoping they hurry up and figure it out for you. As someone else said, not the greatest timing.

Thanks friend.

I was actually busy moving yesterday and didn't get back to the ER. I did exchange a couple encrypted emails with my GP to smooth out this mornings ER visit. I also discussed my case with a friend of mine who is an internist (not an ENT) to get his opinion. We surmised they misdiagnosed it as an outer ear infection and thus the droplets Rx.

Reasonably certain I'll be back to normal in a day or two once I have antibiotics actually making it into my bloodstream.

The L ear is now worse than the R (pain mgt wise) and I have about 80-90% hearing loss both sides (which I'm sure is temporary.) No shortage of comedic moments last night, glad to keep the family entertained. It would be quite awful to endure permanent hearing loss but as a temporary thing it was kind of peaceful to be in my own world of silence lol.

they’re gave me an augmented Rx (amoxicillin - 1000 mg x2 daily)

BIGGER FASTER STRONGER

LFG 67 hours to the ceremony lol

53 hours to go, still deaf

Nearly limitless schtick on the table here
forgot to update this

still had hearing loss the day of my wedding, though by then I had been on the new 1000 mg antibiotic and it was definitely kicking in. at some point Friday night/Saturday morning I just decided eff it, whatever, it is what it is, gotta enjoy the day. was aware my hearing wasn't 100% but never thought about it after mid-morning or so. was able to hear everything well enough during the ceremony & reception (the latter was ridiculously fun; I'm blessed with friends who know how to celebrate well.)

later that night, after we checked into our hotel and  :pickle:  and had dinner, we went for a walk in a quiet neighborhood. I realized I could hear birds singing. hooray! wow that was a ridiculous 5-6 days eh. continued on taking my meds until the 7-day Rx ran out. never went back for my follow up visit (oops) and everything has been honkey doorie.

sorry this is pretty anticlimactic, so how about some toe-tapping 90s dance music?

Blue (Da Ba Dee)

not sure if i posted here or elsewhere, but after a violent sinus infection roughly 25 years ago, i developed eustachean tube dysfunction. it’s perm shut and i can’t drain. i get 3-4 ear infections annually and take more antihistamines and nose sprays than is humanly possible. flonase, zyrtec, singulair. nothing really helps. flying is brutal. sometimes i get dizzy and vertigoey. aboot a year ago i got a tube in my ear to help, it’s just been worse and wind and water makes things worse. doctor mentioned a eustachean tube dilation procedure, where a balloon gets inserted and inflated then removed. studies show great success, but it’s pricey and aetna didn’t cover…….this year my insurance changed to BCBS and lo and behold, they cover the procedure! 10/28 is my day, next friday. i am praying to baby jeebus this helps….anyone have this done? results?

Every year or two, I need to do the Debrox for a few days and then go in for the ear irrigation. Apparently earwax is a bit deep this time, and they told me to keep using the Debrox twice a day to loosen up the stuff in the back and come back on Friday.

Due to the earwax expanding in my ear from the Debrox, I can barely hear anything. Any experiences/advice with that, or just going to have to deal with not really going to be able to hear until Friday?

not sure if i posted here or elsewhere, but after a violent sinus infection roughly 25 years ago, i developed eustachean tube dysfunction. it’s perm shut and i can’t drain. i get 3-4 ear infections annually and take more antihistamines and nose sprays than is humanly possible. flonase, zyrtec, singulair. nothing really helps. flying is brutal. sometimes i get dizzy and vertigoey. aboot a year ago i got a tube in my ear to help, it’s just been worse and wind and water makes things worse. doctor mentioned a eustachean tube dilation procedure, where a balloon gets inserted and inflated then removed. studies show great success, but it’s pricey and aetna didn’t cover…….this year my insurance changed to BCBS and lo and behold, they cover the procedure! 10/28 is my day, next friday. i am praying to baby jeebus this helps….anyone have this done? results?
this surgery went very well i’m sure chem x would say if he wasn’t banned till 12/31/2022…..

- stop moving your feet and position your body to leave a nice outline in the canyon below. good luck!
What a treat! The thread title got me because I'm going to the ENT next week, but I'm gifted with a laugh from good ol' Wikkid. Miss that guy.

I've been just slightly "off" for the last year. If I close my eyes, I feel very dizzy but not enough to fall over. Riding a bike is more difficult than it should be because I feel like I'm drifting. This happens while driving as well sometimes. I have had full blown vertigo once, and it's not nearly that bad, but it is constant. My GP said the wax buildup is not bad although one ear needs a little flushing. Hoping to get an answer.

Got vertigo when I was 29...had to go to the ER and the doctor there quickly diagnosed it, gave me a pill and it was pretty much fixed.
