I used to love gambling. I still like making wagers with friends. I still like to occasionally play poker. I can be entertained for an hour or so at a blackjack table if I have a friend or more with me.

I can even be entertained by video poker for awhile.

But gambling is now something I have a much more difficult time enjoying.

I think part of it is all the bad beats over the years just wearing me out.

I think the rest of it is that the amount of money it would take for me to gamble and actually get a high is far in excess of what I'd be comfortable wagering.

An additional factor is that a lot of the people I run around with had more disposable cash when they were in their 20's (well, they still shouldn't have been gambling, but they did have money) and now in their 30's they have a mortgage and kid and basically very little if any cash that could be lost gambling.

I still enjoy going to Las Vegas, but on my most recent trip I only spent about 3-4 hours total gambling in 3 days.

Used to goto my local casino a couple times a month (once for an organized poker game) but now not even that

I'm that guy that would rather dump a rack and see 4-5 good shows (Cirque du Solei, etc.) than toil away at a table for hours on end.

30 minutes of poker or blackjack and I'm bored. I might last an hour at a craps table.

yeah, that's me now.. I got more entertainment out of the shows I saw, the nice dinners I had, and the sights and sounds of the strip than the tables.... and the more and more than trend happens with people, the more expensive Vegas is gonna get... that casino floor has to generate revenue or the room rates and food prices soar

I actually enjoy casinos, but don't get to go very often. I don't find them depressing like I used to. Those were the days of Central New York casinos where you could "cash your paycheck" and win a prize. I mean...

That said, I like blackjack, craps, and as a youth, used to play baccarat, though I can't remember the rules these days for the life of me. I just remember the "player"/"banker" call.

Never got into casinos. Go about every-other year. Have fun when I'm there I guess, but would rather spend my money on something else.

Almost always play blackjack.

Many years ago I played blackjack for 8 hours straight and lost a total of $40. With the free drinks, that was my greatest casino success.

I go a couple times a year...more for the "nightlife" aspect of it. Casinos typically have good restaurants. I can only tolerate them for a little while though. A week long trip to Vegas is WAY too long. It's usually the local east-coast places...Borgata, Foxwoods, Mohegan, or the Sands over near Bethlehem PA. The "regulars," make me really feel bad for society. I make good money, and I see people there betting 10x what I'd be comfortable betting, and making really stupid bets, and at least based on outward appearance, I don't think they have that kind of disposable income. That kind of thing makes me sad.

I'll play Blackjack, but I have a betting method that basically dictates that I get up at a certain point, whether I'm up or down. I don't have the attention span to play for hours...nor do I usually have the ability to tolerate any table full of people I don't know for that long either. I love roulette, but again, the tables are usually so dang crowded. I'd much prefer to gamble mid-day with smaller crowds, then just eat and drink all night. Slots are simply for entertainment and I never expect to win.

Obviously it's a very different feeling from a beat to hell little dingy place and Vegas, in terms of atmosphere. I try and go to Vegas with friends about once a year and have a blast, but usually end up going to a smaller one once a year as well, I agree not fun as I'm getting older. Everything just seems so dirty.

But I do have fun in Vegas, however it's more about having good times with the fellas vs the thrill of gambling. Though everyone being boozed up and hitting a craps run is about as fun as it gets.

it's a real addiction I guess. I can't even imagine working at or running one of the smaller "indian" or midwestern casinos. I'd be so conflicted.. one one hand I need those regulars for my own paycheck... yet at the same time the financially responsible person inside of me wants to sit them down and let them know they aren't making good choices.

The amount of smoking on the gaming floors that allow it gives me a migraine headache every time.
The smoke plus that incessant ringing noise coming from the slots makes it even worse. I'd rather hear the sounds of swearing in several different languages that you hear at the racetrack.

It's interesting...I used to work for Pfizer. They have that anti-smoking drug Chantix. Well, Chantix apparently interacts with the brain to curb "addictive tendencies." While not an approved indication, apparently it also impacts gambling additction...so absolutely, it seems to be a very real addiction that has some chemical/neurological drivers, not just a mindset.

Re. the smaller casino's...I grew up about 20 minutes from the Charles Town WV races and slots. I used to go all the time for the races as a kid before they opened the casino. There were some shady characters, but it was a fun place. They opened the casino part and it got down right depressing. I remember walking through there and seeing old ladies with those roll-behind oxygen tanks, "strapped" to the slot machines with their frequent gambler cards, strapped to the oxygen tank, and all the while trying to smoke too. So sad. The trash can by the ATM was enlightening because there were just piles of ATM receipts that often showed people taking out thousands of dollars and leaving balances of less than a couple hundred bucks to gamble. So sad.

One of the favorite things for the wife and I to do together. We probably go around 4x per year. We play roulette, bj, and craps. The wife is exceedingly social so she really enjoys/enhances it when the other folks at the table are friendly.

I'll tell you another thing that curbs addictive tendencies even if it might be a bit addictive on its own... snapping one off.

I had a buddy swear to me it was the cure to his casino addiction... he felt like he wanted to gamble... watched some pr0n, next thing you knew he had no interest in going.

Feel like you want that next drink even though you probably don't need it? snap one off and you'll forget about it.

Thinking about texting that ex-girlfriend/wife/girl you know you shouldn't be involved with? same solution.

Interesting. I wonder if there have been any scientific studies done on this subject.

Visit them a few times a year in AC and Charlestown(mostly).

I try to have fun and usually do since I can control my gambling loses and walk away when I've hit that point.Others chase and chase away at what they lose and it turns into a huge loss instead of one you can deal with.

Buddy of mine hit the BJ tables in AC(Borgata)and lost a good stack of change in the matter of 2 hours simply because he chased his losses hoping to hit that score to get back ahead or even.

I enjoy the card tables the most though. Some really interesting characters to be sure at almost every spot I've hit so the conversation is always good.

What if you are addicted to snapping one off?

WHAT THEN?!
