Read something the othwler day that says if you were breast fed, you're more likely to be smarter than someone who wasn't. So then I started wondering if I was or not, and came to the conclusion that I dont even know. Its just not something that has ever been discussed as far as I know.

So now I'm wondering if I'm in the minority for not knowing. Do you know if you were? And those that do know, how does that info or conversation even come about?

Might come up when you have a kid and your mom talks to you or your wife. Otherwise I don't want to think about it

My mom told me a few years ago that in the early 70s, it was more common to bottle feed children. She said she breastfed my brother and I (1970, 1972) for a short time each, then switched to bottle.

And before you ask, this conversation only came up becuase my wife was breastfeeding one of our kids at the time. Not becuase of some wierd fetish.

I KNOW I was not. But my wife breastfed my kids til they were one to give them a fighting chance

There are myriad benefits to breast feeding. Every mother mother and her child would do well to breast feed for as long as reasonably possible.

So those that know, how did you find out? Did you ask? Did your parents volunteer the info? Did it come up in casual conversation? Older sibling tell you?

The subject has never come up in my family, and I'm not gonna ask my mom because that would be weird.

I guess it is none of my business, but why the sudden interest?

Why would it be weird?

"Hi, Mom! How are ya?"

"Good, Wingnut Jr., how are you?"

"I'm fine, Mom. Hey, this might seem like a weird question, but did I suck on your #### when I was a little kid?"

"Why, that's not a weird question, Wingnut, Jr. Yes, I breast fed you for 18 months."

"Thanks Mom."

"You're welcome, Wingnut Jr."

I've asked my mother. I was bottle-fed.

Is this a taboo topic or something? Why not ask her?

Idk...just not something I'd wanna ask at this point in my life...and honestly I don't really care to know, I'm more curious to see if most people know or not.I should probably stop doing bonghits in the afternoon, it seemed like a normal question when I posted it.

Suspicions confirmed - it WOULD be weird, especially since I'm not a Junior.

17-5 at the moment in favor of knowing. Interesting.

When I was an infant, very few women breast fed, so while I don't know, I am confident I was not. I'd daresay, for most people born before about 1970 in the US, the asnwer would be NO.

My mom smoked for her entire pregnancy and didn't quit until I was a few months old. Usually I blame problems (speeding tickets, inflation, War in Iraq) on that fact, but now I'll add lack of breast feeding to the list.

Now I remember why as a small child my breath always smelled like menthol.

I don't know if i was or not, but i do know that my BIL was breastfed until an age that he could walk up and ask for "booby please". I think that might be a little too long...

Wingnut your overthinking it which is a bit wierd IMO. It's not sexual so why the hesitation in asking your mother. For most mothers it's a bonding time.

If you have kids, bottle vs breast-feeding becomes a topic of conversation. if you talk with your parents during this, it will come up.

I wonder about breast-feeding going in and out of vogue. I remember my mom telling me that very few people were doing it in the 60s/70 when she had my brother and me (other than hippies). maybe it was an offshoot of how conservative the 50s were?

my mom said the doctors all said it was healthier to bottle feed

that sounds like something your mom would say.

(that started off as something "my mom probably said", but I couldn't resist.)

also- our pediatrician, when asked if it mattered, said he couldn't tell breast-fed babies from bottle fed. obviously, that's purely from a health/physical-development stand-point.

We have young kids so the topic is fresh in my mind. Formula is very good and nutrition wise is as good as breadt milk. The one think it can't provide the baby is antibodies from the mother. This is vey important for the first few months.
