What a hoot you must be at parties.

I do want some cash involved but IMO if it's "too much" (subjective) then it loses something because people are too wrapped up in the money aspect.

I play in about 12 leagues in any given year. All of them for free.

I am not opposed to playing in money league and I have in the past, but I just enjoy the challange of playing for the pride of winning. Bragging rights is enough compensation for me.

:goodposting: I played in a money league once, and everyone #####ed about every roster move made. It may have just been the league, but IMO, it had alot to do with the money aspect. Bragging rights and smacktalk are enough of a motivation for me to enjoy the game.

Can't answer correctly because I play in free and $ leagues.

I take them all seriously, but which one's do I focus on? Take a guess.

I particpate in 11 leagues, with 75% of them involving :goodposting:

However, my favorite is a free 16-team IDP ONLY league that features no offensive players. We start a DT, 2 DE, 4 LB, 2 CB and 2 S each week. Great league. Anyone who is hardcore into IDP should participate in this format in at least one league.

I play in a low money league. $50 entry a team and $4 per owner per week for side pools (3 towards high points and 1 for picks) .

Total cost for website and draftboard and fees was $131

I play in one of each.

I check up on my espn free league through the week, and maybe 2 or 3 times on sunday. With my money league (150 + 5 dollar transactions) I have my laptop open in front of the TV flipping back and forth between games.

In my free league, 3 people have already given up. In my money league, not only does everyone do their best every week, everyone is involved in polls, smack talk, and lots more.

Money leagues are the only way to go.

They key is not money, it's that you have owners who are invested in the league. Money is one way to help ensure that happens, but it's not the only way.

I play in 4 free leagues with family, friends and acquaintances. Plenty of competition, trash talking and bragging rights. Don't need to play for money, just as I don't need to play for money in basketball.

I can see, however, that if you are playing with people you barely know, or even don't know, it might require some bucks to keep you more interested.

same here usually. my league decided this year for a $20 entry fee but i could take that or leave it. i just do it for fun.

I play in 4 leagues: free deep keeper, $50 entry deep keeper, free auction league (1st year for auction - it was fun!), and $100 entry redraft. All 4 leagues are with people i know or an some of their friends...............so no real strangers. They are all leagues with well thought-out rules that encourage trading and all have a mix of hard core Fantasy players and 'lightweights', even though most have been established for years.

I play for the fun of it, and because i am a very competitive and anaytical person. The money is immaterial, 'the bragging rights' of winning the free leagues are just as important to me.

Whether I win or lose in the money leagues doesn't affect my pocketbook or attitude at all. It is nice to win a few extra bucks when I win, but anyone who NEEDS to play fantasy for money has some mighty misplaced priorities IMO.

I am 61 years old, pretty financially secure, and have learned long ago that money is just one way of 'keeping score'. But having people respect you does not revolve around the money in most of the important things in life - including fantasy football.

BTW i also play competitive tournament poker, and as a poker player i can tell you that the most competitive players play with just as much concentration, patience and competitiveness in a 20 cent game or a $200 game (but they do adapt their style of play to the types of players who play for different size stakes .

And the most successful players know that it is absolutely stupid to play above their bankroll or with the 'rent money'. The best players are not the compulsive gambler types, because they let their emotions get in the way of their decision making.

There are a lot of similarities between competitive poker and fantasy football - and LIFE.

I never play in free leagues. I put too much into it to have a league messed up by a guy that has nothing invested in it. Yeah - some crap still happens in money leagues but people rarely post an entry fee and just stop competing. I don't do it for the money - I just want people to compete until the end. I think the money helps that happen

I only play 1 league every yr, keeper league which is a free Yahoo. We do have a $180 prize to the winner. 10 team league so $20 from each owner to the winner.

My homeboy league is free, and I hate it when guys quit when they're "out of it." If you're lucky enough to have a free league where everyone keeps trying until the end, then count your blessings. I'm not a high-stakes gambler, but I'm glad that I've won enough in my money leagues to pay for my fees this year and had a little left over, so I'm not going in the hole on this hobby...yet!

Play in 2 leagues, both money ($40.00/$150.00). I have played in several free leagues in past and about the 4th week, someone always quit paying attention to their roster because they were doing poorly. In one free league, only 3 people were paying attention to their rosters at all during the last 3 weeks. Definately not fun! :lmao:

What's the point of playing if there's no cash involved?
Well, some people like football and, as a result, fantasy football. They also like competing against friends and trying to win.
A lot of football fans feel FF is a joke and is leading to the demise of the NFL. I am not sure they aren't correct. I did not play FF for a long time and I think there is a case to be made against FF.

Maybe the face painters consider it a joke but I think it's a wonderful supplement for someone who really enjoys following pro football.

I play in 12 leagues with 11 pay and 1 free league and the only reason that I stay in the free league is because it was one of the first leagues I joined and still has all the same owners that we started with about 10 years ago and it is probably my toughest league with great owners. I have won in my money leagues but have never won in the free league and does not look good for this year now that Bush is down.

I do both... more money league than freebies. But I have found that the lower money leagues ($50 or under) are a lot more competitive and fun.

2 leagues. 1 with friends for $50, 1 with many of you for $25.

I'd find it difficult to motivate myself for a free league while I was participating in money leagues. If the commish of my friends league said there was to be no money involved next year, I would still participate but would probably leave any other money league I was involved in.

To answer the thread's question, I guess playing with people you know, like and trust is more important than whether or not funds are involved. The only free leagues I've played in have been online with strangers and there just wasn't much bang in it. All my local leagues, however, involve modest ($50-100) entrance fees and it definitely adds a bit of spice to what's mostly a social competition.

I don't play in any free leagues and I only play in leagues that have live drafts. I cut back to 4 a few years ago and think that's too many
