While reading a thread re: the NFL possibly going to 2 bye weeks and how that would affect fantasy leagues, i got to thinking "We've seen this before".
In 1993, the NFL had double bye weeks. There were only 28 teams back then and the divisions with 4 teams typically all sat out at the same time, etc. If you played FF back then you probably remember what a headache it was (remember...Internet was a baby back then).
Anyways, this was generally a terrible thing for all parties involved:
-For over half the season, you were looking at 4 or 5 games on at a time.
-The Matchups were brutal when the NFC EAST and AFC WEST were on Bye (yes, you read that right: The Chiefs and Raiders were the bees' knees back then and Denver was no slouch either).
-The Networks cried bloody slaughter as their ratings took hits thanks to the bad games.
-The players/coaches cried foul because they claimed they couldn't keep any momentum going with all the breaks. (I know that sounds counter to what you would think but this was an era when many more players seemed to genuinely LOVE football and for those guys that were breaking continuity with 2 mini-vacations during the year, it seemed like a few teams couldn't keep their groove going).
In general, its commonly reviewed as a total flop and is probably why it has never happened again.
Today, maybe it would be a little better because there are more teams and the league has learned from the past experience, but it could also be worse because of the Thursday games and other changes.
But all in all, for those that are suspecting a 2 bye week NFL next year when/if the league expands the schedule to 18 games, there may be hope that this would NOT happen based on the problems the league experienced with it the first go around. So maybe, just maybe, we won't have to deal with the FF frustrations that would be caused by double byes.
