Do YOU remember the last time we had 2 bye weeks? (1 Viewer)

Shutout

While reading a thread re: the NFL possibly going to 2 bye weeks and how that would affect fantasy leagues, i got to thinking "We've seen this before".

In 1993, the NFL had double bye weeks. There were only 28 teams back then and the divisions with 4 teams typically all sat out at the same time, etc. If you played FF back then you probably remember what a headache it was (remember...Internet was a baby back then).

Anyways, this was generally a terrible thing for all parties involved:

-For over half the season, you were looking at 4 or 5 games on at a time.

-The Matchups were brutal when the NFC EAST and AFC WEST were on Bye (yes, you read that right: The Chiefs and Raiders were the bees' knees back then and Denver was no slouch either).

-The Networks cried bloody slaughter as their ratings took hits thanks to the bad games.

-The players/coaches cried foul because they claimed they couldn't keep any momentum going with all the breaks. (I know that sounds counter to what you would think but this was an era when many more players seemed to genuinely LOVE football and for those guys that were breaking continuity with 2 mini-vacations during the year, it seemed like a few teams couldn't keep their groove going).

In general, its commonly reviewed as a total flop and is probably why it has never happened again.

Today, maybe it would be a little better because there are more teams and the league has learned from the past experience, but it could also be worse because of the Thursday games and other changes.

But all in all, for those that are suspecting a 2 bye week NFL next year when/if the league expands the schedule to 18 games, there may be hope that this would NOT happen based on the problems the league experienced with it the first go around. So maybe, just maybe, we won't have to deal with the FF frustrations that would be caused by double byes.

I remember it very well since I have been playing since 1990.

Do you guys know what the difference between a shark and a fish is ?

A fish worries about all the problems a double bye might cause them.

While a Shark will love the double bye week for all of the advantages it will give them over his opponents.

A Shark will build a deeper and stronger team the his opponents and while his opponents are struggling to fill those starting spots now twice a year for each player a Shark will be dominating with his overwhelming depth as he stretches his lead in his division winning more games then ever before.

The double bye weeks will help separate the contenders from the pretenders.

This is the Shark tank by the way right ?

Bring on the double weeks!

I would also have to think they either expand to larger rosters (so banged up players can be kept on active roster instead of IR) or add some kind of DL that a player could be placed on and out for a certain length of time but not the entire year or teams are going to run out of quality healthy bodies in a hurry. It is bad enough now. With the season being even longer a guy that gets hurt in September could miss 3 months and still be back for the last 2 months of the season including playoffs if the team is not forced to place him on season eneding IR.

Thinking of the Packers this year at the time they were put on IR, Grant, Finley & Barnett were all thought to have possibly been able to return by the end of the season, but the Packers had too many injuries to be able to hold roster spots for them that long. Would be nice to have been able to place them on some type of DL and get them back for the playoffs if they were able. I have to think the players would push hard for this since they are none too happy to go on IR if the injury is not truly season ending.

Medicinal marijuana?

i've been trying to reason with the rest of my league the major complications just the added bye will create. we all know there will be more injuries from more games, and possibly more from less preparation time. Since many players aren't in shape the time the season rolls around now(hammy/groin pulls), i see more problems if it starts 2weeks sooner(as i think they plan on shortening preseason games from 4 to 2, right?). as we'd all think or pray professional athletes get in shape/train alot in offseason..........some just don't.

having more bye's late in the year when its sometimes difficult to set a roster from injuries alone . in general is crazy(WHY isn't the nfl considering fantasy players!!! lol).

i'd think waiver claims or in our case salary cap considerations need to be well thought out as more transactions will be made.

those that have voiced opionion in my league generally want to stand pat and keep everything the same atleast this year. I as commish am thinking about just making the executive decision to expand roster and/or IR and salary cap
