I saw this UTube video about a guy learning to free throw like the pros.

First for all, he shoots like a girl.

I once played basketball in NYC and the guys who could dunk told me I did it all wrong. They said I should start a free throw by holding the ball over my head. I tried it and it dramatically increased my free throw percentages immediately.

So, FBGs who play basketball... was I the only one who did not know this?

Not that there is a particular girl shooting form, but from the beginning he has a decent looking shot.

I say all this as a guy who doesn't play much basketball anymore but could go out tomorrow and shoot 80% from the line.

The dunk guy said the goal is not only to get the ball to go into the basket but to have it go in without touching the rim. Therefore, they can tell someone is not a good player if he lets the ball hit the backboard first.When I throw overhead, I had much better aim and "all net" was also much easier. I think the body motion is different.

I was 13 years old then so the dunk guy was like my Yoda Jedi master.

As someone not gifted athletically I learned from an early age to look good playing even if the shot didn't go in.

Generally speaking, you should start with the ball in the "pocket"- just above waist high to shoulder high. From there it should move smoothly to the release point which should definitely be above your head.

When my son was playing AAU (~15 years ago) he went to a shooting clinic put on by Dave Hopla. This guy is the real deal when it comes to shooting instruction. I highly recommend.
