Am I the only one who hates the anti-climactic-ness of it all? I say it should be illegal to negotiate a deal before the draft!
I'd rather the following teams be able to negotiate as well. Let's say the Lions sign Jason Smith today. The Rams sign Monroe tomorrow, the Chiefs sign Curry on Friday, Seattle trades out of #4 on Saturday morning... it can make this a whole week of excitement.Sounds like, if they get someone signed, we still might not know until they're on the clock. What are the chances of having a deal done before the draft?
"I think very good. That was our plan, we talked about that back at the combine and it's very important and we plan on getting something done prior to making that selection.''
Can you agree to terms with multiple prospects and then make your decision?
"I think we can agree to the parameters, we can agree to some structure but I think you ultimately have to agree with one person.''
Is there an advantage to not identifying guys you're targeting at No. 1?
"I think so.''
what could the advantage be on not iding the pick? From Martin Mayhew's Press Conference this week:

no agent in their right mind would let the kid take a deal less than what the #1 got last yearAaron Curry stated on "Moving The Chains" that he would accept less than Jake Long got with the #1 pick last year. If Stafford, Smith, etc. balk at the offers, I think they sign Curry.
I heard that. My first thought was, I wonder if his agent would agree. It opens the door for negative recruiting by agents next year. "Hey, don't sign with THAT guy... his client last year went #1 overall and he allowed him to take less money than the #1 pick got the year before!"Aaron Curry stated on "Moving The Chains" that he would accept less than Jake Long got with the #1 pick last year.

Position has to play a factor. Ryan was the 3rd pick and got a better deal than the #1.no agent in their right mind would let the kid take a deal less than what the #1 got last yearAaron Curry stated on "Moving The Chains" that he would accept less than Jake Long got with the #1 pick last year. he was on Rome is Burning talking about contract talks between his agent and the Lions front office...I kind of got the feeling he's going to be the #1 pick...he looked like he was smirking when asked about any potential deal,as if he already knew he was going to Detroit.Aaron Curry stated on "Moving The Chains" that he would accept less than Jake Long got with the #1 pick last year. Yeah, but at the end of the day the agent has to do what their client tells them to do. If Curry wants to go first overall bad enough and is willing to take less money, that's his call... Take a look at the guaranteed money that last year's top 10 got:#01. Jake Long OT - $30m#02. Chris Long DE - $29m#03. Matt Ryan QB - $34m#04. Darren McFadden RB - $26m#05. Glenn Dorsey DT - $23m#06. Vernon Gholston DE - $21m#07. Sedrick Ellis DT - $19.5M#08. Derrick Harvey DE - $17.177m#09. Keith Rivers LB - $15.6m#10. Jerod Mayo LB - 13.8mMatt Ryan's guaranteed money was high due to him being a QB, you can see a sharp decline from him to DMac and then progressively down the list. So if Curry is getting nervous about slipping past KC at #3, he could be thinking the guaranteed money on his contract could end up in the low 20's easily. Especially considering his position, LB... If he can get $28-$29 million guaranteed by signing a slightly smaller contract than Jake Long's and going #1, then he could very well end up making millions more than if he ended up being drafted anywhere between #4 and #10.Again, considering he's a linebacker and doesn't play an overly desirable position for an #1 overall draftpick - I think it's a very shrewd and smart stance by Curry to make himself as enticing as possible to the Lions.Edit to add: Also, I remember reading a report somewhere - maybe in another thread - about Stafford telling his friends that he's going #1 and getting $40m guaranteed. Not sure of the legitimacy of that, but considering Ryan got $34m at #3 it doesn't seem too far fetched... Anyway, from the Lions point of view, if Curry is willing to sign for less than Jake Long that could potentially be as much as $12m difference. I'd have to think they'd consider that heavily in their final decision.no agent in their right mind would let the kid take a deal less than what the #1 got last yearAaron Curry stated on "Moving The Chains" that he would accept less than Jake Long got with the #1 pick last year. I'm drooling over the dynasty prospects of that Georgia/Georgia Tech connection once the kid knows what he's doing with that laser arm.Oakland Press is reporting the Stafford deal is close.
(Oakland the Detroit suburb county, not the Raider's one.)

Need to figure in contract by years. Jake Long's contract is for 1 less year than Ryans, so he will hit the FA market before Ryan and should garner more money over the same number of yearsYeah, but at the end of the day the agent has to do what their client tells them to do. That's right.Absolutely. You'd have to be a moron to not have the player signed before the draft. It's really the only thing the 1st pick is good for anymore, IMO......
just read this as well was coming to post...this makes things interesting even though it still seems they want staffordSource: Lions have Aaron Curry in fold if Matthew Stafford doesn't sign soon

According to a league source, the Detroit Lions have completed contract terms with Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry and the team is now waiting to see if it can reach an agreement with their No. 1 target, Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford. The source said the Lions will not allow a decision to go beyond Friday and if a deal isn't done with Stafford by then, the team will sign Curry and take him with the first overall draft pick.
The source said he believes that Stafford's agent, Tom Condon, will eventually agree to a deal with the Lions but probably won't do it until it gets closer to the Friday deadline.
The price of the contract can only go up in the final hours so Condon will likely push the issue as far as he feels he has something to gain.
The Lions, according to the source, aren't budging and are just waiting to see if Stafford accepts their deal before they move to Curry. The Lions have been adamant that they want to get their draft pick signed before the draft starts at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

If they did would they even bother trying to get Stafford to sign - unless it was for less?Or maybe because he's a QB he's worth more, although "rated" the same?So...they have Stafford and Curry rated exactly the same?
who cares, just sign already.
noIf they do can the #2 team begin negotiating?
