I freelance so a few times a month I have to wear a tie, depending on the client. I don't have a problem with it since everyone else is wearing one too during those jobs. But it's just such a stupid article of clothing. When will it finally be out of fashion and dead?

I work at a startup in Austin, which may as well be ground zero of flip flops, shorts, and t shirts (Bay Area has the hoodie market cornered).

I wear a tie 3 or 4 times a week. To explain why I cite a coworker who told me early on, "you keep dressing like that and you're going to stand out." Yes, I think I will.

As long as it's still what the bosses wear. One of these days the bosses will be goth or emo or something. Skinny jeans?? ####, fire me

I started off the first working years with a suit and tie.

Business casual resulted in Dockers and open collar shirt, permanently!

I wore a tie just about every day for the first 10 years of my career (architect). I've rarely worn a tie in the second 10.

I'm supposed to wear one every day, and I wear one twice a month.

My boss gets pissy about it so it really makes it awesome. Only time I wear a tie is when I have to go to Congress or to DOJ, mostly because I don't want to be noticed. I was asked to go to a White House dinner last week and I didn't go because I would have to wear a suit and tie, I'll leave that to the froggy dooshbags trying to prove something to someone else.

I do not own one. I don't even own a dress shirt that is normally worn with a tie. My goal in life is to never own one again.

In high school we would have to wear a tie on game day for basketball. Really sucked, but at least made the most of it with some wacky tacky ties.

Passing up a White House dinner because you have to wear a suit and tie is one of the better things I have heard all year so far. Props

That's not a "look at me" thing either, if you've been to one you've been to them all. It was actually an Obama dinner or maybe lunch for the AG, it wasn't a formal or anything. Those are just the worst, tuxedos and dooshbags for miles. Lots of tail though, but those were for my younger days. I do like the AG a lot though, had she asked me to go I would have went. But I sent my deputy who really wanted to go, those things should only be for people who want to be there.

Those things shouldn't exist. Not only do they suck, we're all sick of paying for them.

It would take something really special to get me to wear my most hated type of outfit and hang out in that horrible environment. The losers of events should have to attend those, not the winners.

Only to court. I gave up wearing them for depositions several years ago: whom am I trying to impress, the court reporter? :oldunsure: In fact, I think other dudes who show up at depositions with ties now really stand out, and not in a good way. I never wear them to client meetings, either. Maybe a jacket, maybe even a suit & dress shirt for something like a client dinner, but virtually never a tie.

I don't wear them anymore unless there's big meetings but never really minded doing so. My issue is with the standard business casual dress...being forced to wear virtually the same ### #### clothes when it's 90 degrees as I do when it's 40 degrees. We should have come to a decision as a functional society decades ago on a better choice for summer.

BTW if you feel like a tie is choking you, your dress shirt collar is too tight.

I voted sometimes. Recently went from working in warehouse environment (shorts, tshirts, tennis shoes) to a corporate environment (business casual). Whore a tie the first day on a recommendation by a colleague. I was the only person in the building wearing a tie. Hopefully that will be the last time.

I think the ones holding on are banking and finance.

And politicians.
Obviously the reason for the holdout is a desire to appear more professional and trustworthy. I suspect on at least a subconscious level, it still makes a difference with people. Although probably only a slight one.

Why all the tie hate??? I wear one every day and rarely notice I have it on.

I think most guys buy dress that are way too tight in the neck and that makes it uncomfortable. Most of the time I don't even button the top button, just use the tie to close the neck of the shirt at a comfortable position.

Most postal "management" wear ties every day. Their job discription should include "daily harrasment" Whenever I see someone wearing a tie, I automatically have a strong distrust of them. True story.

At least a couple days a week. When we are meeting with clients or at business functions like a chamber of commerce lunch. I've never felt like I was being choked but I don't have a big fat guy neck.

I'm all good with dressing better than the vast majority of the office. Would probably not like it if everyone wore a coat and tie.

Fixed

Finding dress shirts that fit in the neck, but don't have sleeves made for gorillas, is impossible.

You got me man. I'm 6'1", 170. Tailored slim shirts work like a charm right off the rack.

Congratulations on being an average guy. ;)

Only if I'm going to court. But if I put on one I'll leave it on. :style: :bowtie:

I've been working at the same place for a long time. What happened is Katrina: before the storm ties were standard and expected. When the Storm hit some people didn't have a wardrobe. Also it just didn't seem to matter anymore. The no tie thing was supposed to be temporary but that's how it's been ever since unless something formal with clients is going on.

It must be a mentality thing. I worked in a place where you had to wear one and everyone hated it.

In my current job I am the boss and choose to wear a tie, I like it. No one else wears one and that is no problem for me.

I've co-opted the suit, no tie look at my office. Real Estate development so still many folks who where a tie all / most days but our company doesn't have a formal dress code and much as I love the fashion of a tie, #### that ####, just not comfortable.

I do have probably a hundred plus ties still and will pull them out for an occasional meeting (like with a new prospect / contact in a formal setting with high stakes) or elected officials and for occasional formal galas and events.

Monday and Thursday are meeting days, so yes to those days during Fall and Spring. Unless it is really hot I'll do a button up every other day. Winter I do the sweater shirt combo instead of the shirt and tie and since it is really freaking cold I do it most other days too. Summer is polo season.

I need to send you to my girl at Knot Standard downtown. She'll do a fitting and have a shirt made for you for free as a sample. Shirts after that are only $130 and are the best shirts ever. EVER.
