Yesterday - I woke up and the bump/mound near my big toe is absolutely killing me. 

Its very tender to the touch.  Thats the only thing that hurts but it hurts bad.

Let me rephrase.  I've had ingrown toenails.

This is the  bump below your big toe nearing the instep.

assume you are talking about the knuckle of your big toe?  if so, very likely gout.  i've gotten it a dozen times.

From the way you've described it, sounds more like a bunion than gout or arthritis.

If the pain/redness is on the top, not the interior side, of the foot at the base of the big toe, then gout is more likely than a bunion.

interesting - it is more on the interior of said knuckle/mound but no bump

I'd start with your family doc to get your levels checked for gout to rule that out first.

I get pain once in a while exactly in that spot, pain shooting thru the toe. In fact, it was hurting me last night and worse this morning. 

I did some googling and in my case, it was (I think) tight calf muscles, and getting them stretched during the day today has helped quite a bit.

I played volleyball last night and didn't do my usual calf stretches beforehand. I've also had Achilles tendinitis in that same leg.
