Doctors who take "Cash Only" No Insurance Companies involved (1 Viewer)

A friend who is a doctor sent this to me.  It is from 6 months ago so not sure it this has been talked about but it is interesting. Could this be the future?

These doctors list their prices online for all procedures.  When done you pay with credit card, check or cash.  There are no insurance companies involved. No red tape with fighting over the bill and who is paying what. The price differential for what hospital's charge is quite shocking. At some the same procedure could go from 14K to 60K

I watched a 60 minutes about ten years ago that highlighted some doctors in Indiana that were doing this and the results were phenomenal.  Competition brought prices down just like it did for lasik surgery.

My dad had open heart surgery about 20 years ago to fix a faulty heart valve.  Didn't have any insurance, owned his own small business..  He negotiated a "cash price" for the procedure with the Dr and hospital beforehand...  Substantially lower price..

The fact that health care providers aren't required to give up front prices for services is why our health care system costs so much. You fix that, you fix more than half of our current system.

just a data point:

i've got a buddy who's a podiatrist in Los Angeles. right about the time the ACA got implemented, he decided to go the "cash only" route. saves him a bunch of time and overhead, and business is as good or better.

50% of people don't have dental insurance and so nearly 35-40% of my business is of this variety.

I'd love to go cash only, but people with insurance drive my hygiene department... those people come in and get their 2X a year free or near free cleaning and people who are cash only tend not to do maintenance visits because rarely do people like to pay for preventative services.
