Last week, my new 2018 Toyota Camry got hit and run in a parking lot. Scratch marks on the left corner of the front bumper (no dents) and the grill was cracked. Shop quotes me $1050 if I don't put in a claim (sand and paint and replace grill). They said if I put in a claim they can save me half the deductible (I have $1000 deductible) but the repair would take longer due to going through insurance. Quick google search says deductible waivers are not necessary illegal and I know most shops around me do it. I figure, what the hell, its not like I have money to burn. Since this is a hit and run and I am not at fault my insurance likely won't go up (I also have accident forgiveness) there really is no downside submitting a claim. So I did so.
Yesterday I got the repair estimate from GEICO. I was shocked to see the estimate was almost $10k. They took pictures and either found a lot of damage underneath or is it possible the GEICO adjuster was in cahoots with the shop and overestimated the damage. I am being honest, the damage wasn't really that bad. Its all funny money to me anyway as out of pocket will only cost me $500 but still something doesnt smell right. Also, I already authorized the repair and authorized payment to the shop from GEICO so I can't get the check and have the repair done somewhere else. $10k for bumper damage in a parking lot hit and run sounds ridiculous to me.
