Dolphin Players bullied Jonathan Martin, Richie Incognito SUSPENDED (1 Viewer)

It's incredible that folks are ready to re-write the rules in the NFL.
Who?
The Media IMO...next radio host Adam Kuperstein is taking over the radio controls now, blasting Randall Hill for calling into the Renshaw show and defending Incognito...Kuperstein is the "type" of guy who would be outraged by hazing in the locker room which I find naive. Media has a big time play in this.

Andy Garda tweeted back at me last night that of course the media wants to add "narrative" to this.
Wait, I tweeted to THE Andy Garda last night as well but he didn't respond to me... wtf is going on???????

Randall Hill just chimed in down here on local radio. Hill said martin could never have played for the Canes back in the day. It's not sexy to post that but there are legions of people, players, former players, fans, media, that are not going to agree or take Martin's side. It's incredible that folks are ready to re-write the rules in the NFL. I thought we had enough of that with the concussion issues/personal foul calls but I guess not.
Doing away with hazing/bullying/harrassment/abuse and trying to make the game safer and free from concussions are good things. This is society progressing. Not sure why you want society to stay the same and not improve.

No idea who Randall Hill is or why its relevant that the Canes were a bunch of #######s back in the day.
You can't regulate violence in football, those are Curtis Martin's words on the TIm McCarver show not mine. You obviously feel your position on the matter is right and anything other than blind support of outlawing hazing and player safety is wrong. And you hide behind terms like player safety which is BS because there are lots of ways they could improve player safety but don't.

Did you watch the PBS Frontline piece on the NFL?

You have your feelings, I have mine. I want players to feel safe, safe to come to work and not be harassed but this is not an insurance desk jockey job and unfortunately that is what most of us in here do, jockey desks. Now if we have some former NFL players in here that want to chime in, I'm all ears but I'm not gonna be dictated what I should feel by some faceless internet poster, sorry if that disturbs you.

So far I have seen former players sticking up for Incognito, maybe that will change in the coming days and weeks.

I'll say it....

If anyone thinks Martin is wrong whats so ever after the voicemail that was left, you are a sad human. I dont care if he quits, if he wants to write a book or if he wants to sue the NFL. This bullying and harassment stuff must stop, it does not better society at all. Oh, and no, just because you're not open to hearing harassing calls like that does not make you soft. It makes you human.

Incognito played his last down, serves him right.

End of story.
Really? Maybe the end of your story...

Something tells me that the real story is just getting started.

C'mon, you don't think Martin has some sissy in him? You think he handled this well?
So you either get in a physical altercation or you're a sissy?

What are you talking about? Where did he tell you how you should feel?

You might be as crazy as people around here have said you are.

I'm 100% confident Richie Icognito is a huge d-bag, but this entire situation is ridiculous. I can't believe people actually think he should never play again. Mike Vick killed dogs, Ray Lewis played a role in a murder, and countless others have had domestic violence charges. This is nothing compared to any of those situations.

I am sure players say much worse things to each other on the field during the games. I don't think the Dolphins should ignore this issue, but how long will it be before players start getting kicked out of games for calling other players names?

Another problem I have with this is that Incognito wasn't the only one. Initial reports say he was bullied by other members of the O-line as well. Why do jerks like Pouncy just get to skate by on this?
Mike Vick killing dogs has negligible effect on his teammates.

Lewis covering up a murder has zero effect on his teammates.

DUIs and domestic issues has zero effect on the player's teammates.

Using the N word DIRECTLY at a black player... and to have it on tape where other black players will hear it? Yeah, I feel pretty confident in saying that Richie Incognito will never play a down in the NFL again.

So nobody at the NFL is looking at changing the rules; just media people filling air time and screen space.
Oh Fatness, you misunderstood. Of course the NFL is going to do this now but they weren't concerned about it the last 50 years, only when the media picks this up and turns it into a burning out of control fire. You don't think the media helped fuel a lot of this?

Im more interetsed in the gray areas than the black-and-white. Incognito seems like a very special kind of psycho which makes the situation impossible to overlook. He will have to pay for his actions, words and demeanor.

But where do you draw the line? Dozens of current and former/players admit that this happens all the time. Rumors are even circulating that Martin has been on the other side. Do you think Martin ever participated in an OL dinner paid for by a rookie? What if someone quit because they were humilated after getting taped to a goal post? Or suffered psychologically from getting their head shaved? Would that constitue hazing and require punishment?

This is going to open a HUGE can of worms as there are MANY more players (and incidents) that will be looked at with greater scrutiny. Herm Edwards, a player/coach for 30 years and a seemingly good man, did not flinch when being told Martin had to pay for a $15K dinner ("it should only happen once though" was his retort. ) Whats the tipping point? When the NFL sets some type of "hazing limit"? Or when someone blows their head off?
Excellent post native

Are you blaming the media for reporting facts now, or for not reporting facts for 50 years?

ESPN

Transcripts of voice mail messages and text messages left for the Miami Dolphins' Jonathan Martin by teammate Richie Incognito indicate a pattern of racial epithets and profane language.Multiple sources confirmed to ESPN that the following is a transcript of a voice message Incognito left for Martin in April 2013, a year after Martin was drafted:

"Hey, wassup, you half n----- piece of s---. I saw you on Twitter, you been training 10 weeks. [i want to] s--- in your f------ mouth. [i'm going to] slap your f------ mouth. [i'm going to] slap your real mother across the face [laughter]. F--- you, you're still a rookie. I'll kill you."
 boys will be boys. Lol.
I hope you're kidding.

I can see a statement like this being okay if it was back and forth between the two of them and they were good friends and it's just their way of having fun, but the fact that he left the team because of it makes it pretty clear this didn't go both ways and it's clear bullying/abuse/threats/etc.

Did Pouncey leave him racist voicemails and texts threatening to kill him and hit his mother? If so, then he should be dealt with similarly. There is context, as well. You can get away with saying crazy #### in the heat of battle on the field. This is different. If you can't distinguish between the two, then you're just not going to get it.
I agree he should be punished, but do you really think he should never play another down of football? That's kind of overboard imo.
I haven't seen anybody advocate for a lifetime ban. I just don't think anybody is going to want him in their locker room any time soon, if ever again. There are a lot of jackasses in the NFL, but this guy is special.

I know this, whatever team Martin goes to next, no one will mess with him. If Incognito gets another gig ever, which I doubt, he will be the joke of everything.

Ironic, no?
Why should Martin play again? He can sue Incognito and the Dolphins for millions, and then be set for life.
Gee, I don't know, because maybe he loves the game. Maybe it isnt about the money for everyone, and assuming he is doing this for money is beyond the scope of whats really happening.
Does he? He just walked away it seems
Yup. He clearly does not love it THAT much. I know I will get lambasted by many for saying this, and probably be told that people feel sorry for my kids, but...

The hazing that has been reported thus far does not sound all that bad to me. The $15K is bad, but not worthy of walking out on your team. The "getting up from the table" BS just sounds like guys being guys. And the recent report that Martin did the exact same thing to Nate Garner (backup guard) the prior week puts a bigger question mark on all of this. You are going to do it to someone else, and then cry when they do it to you? Really? Then tell on them? Sounds like 3rd grade.

I am not saying that the "victim" is to blame here. I am just saying that based upon what I have read, the alleged hazing does not seem to justify someone quitting on their teammates in the middle of a semi-promising season. There is probably a lot that I dont know, ranging possibly from worse hazing, mental illness, or both. Just basing this on what I have read...thats all. So hold off on calling me a bad parent for now.

ETA - That was not directed at any poster in particular - just the mentality of those getting high up on their soap boxes claiming that Martin is unquestionably right in all of this, and anyone questioning that point of view is a moronic thug.
The normal hazing of taping a player to a goal post or giving him a funny hair cut is part of a rookie experience. One thing you skipped over is the hate crime aspect of this story. What if a racial slur or homophobic slur was made by Incognito to Martin in a text or email?
Good point. That is inexcusable.
I don't know...I'd rather get called a name than taped to a goalpost or get a funny haircut.

Seems like name calling is the least of whatever happened here.
Even if that name is a racial/ethnic/homosexual slur?

C'mon, you don't think Martin has some sissy in him? You think he handled this well?

You're crazy as a loon too. He's being arrogant like there is no room for any other debate.

Why are you trying to harrass me with name calling? I'm not calling anyone names. That's BULL####, stop it.

Other than the majority QBs most NFL players are one rung above prison lifers. Educated players or well rounded individuals usually have a tougher time in a NFL locker room..just as they would in a maximum prison.

My crazy as a loon what? Where's the arrogance in stating an opinion that doing away with bullying and questioning why you don't want progress to be made in such an area.

Neither did I call you any names.

Are you enjoying yourself. ;)

I'm sure Incognito is a big obnoxious goon, but I'm finding it hard to believe he's not being singled out right now to take heat off the coaches and higher ups. He's an easy target.

Having said that, it's very likely Martin is a big #####.
I like to see you say that to his face.
He would prob run home to tell on me.
<_< C'mon, dude.
I mean I think its a disgrace that this could go on amongst adults. Incognito is a big, dumb ox and I'm sure there are other similar dumb #######s all over the league. But imo, Martin comes off like a big sissy running home to mom and dad. I'm not saying throw down with the big maniac, but there has to be a better way for a grown man to stand up for himself.
Sounds to me like he spent more than a year trying other ways.

Reports: Incognito left racial slur, death threat on Martin’s voicemail

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that in April of 2013, Incognito left a voicemail for Martin saying, “Hey, wassup, you half n—– piece of [expletive] . . . I saw you on Twitter, you been training ten weeks. [i want to] [expletive] in your [expletive] mouth. [i'm going to] slap your [expletive] mouth. [i'm going to] slap your real mother across the face (laughter). [Expletive] you, you’re still a rookie. I’ll kill you.”
I'm not defending Incognito, but I think the headline makes him sound like a white supremacist who really wanted to kill the guy and assault his mother. I don't think this is the case. I think he was just being a bully, and harassing the guy. No doubt Incognito probably has a screw loose, but do you all really think he wanted to kill the guy?

Andy, do you really think I want to see players inured, really? Do you think I want players extorting money from other players?

Is it possible there was a perfect storm here and if Incognito and Martin were in different locker rooms that none of this would have happened? Is this really an epidemic league wide?

I just don't think we should reshape policies based on 1 incident or 1 story involving 2-3 players on 1 team.

Also the Miami Dolphins shipped out Brandon Marshall for character issues and they kept a guy who has fractured the locker room now. Let's not take the focus too far off the GM/Coach and yes Stephen Ross.

There is a huge difference between commonly practiced and accepted rookie hazing and repeatedly harassing, extorting and threatening a non-rookie starter, who is a fellow o-lineman. Coaches will see that and not want any part of the guy. And he's a threat not only to the team, but to the owner's bank account.

Just a hunch, but I bet the stuff we know today is just the tip of the iceberg. Suspect there's plenty more out there to make it clear enough that even the mouth breathers can figure it out.

I have no idea what you want. I haven't called for any sweeping rule changes and I don't think anyone else has in here.

You're just swinging the chair in the ring here, friendo.

C'mon, you don't think Martin has some sissy in him? You think he handled this well?
So you either get in a physical altercation or you're a sissy?
Wooooo dude....you have to read my posts. I said "I'm not saying throw down with the maniac..."

I mean none of us know how Martin tried to handle this previously, but start at standing up for yourself and telling the big dope "hey I'm here to play football, leave me out of your bull####". Or, if you're so terrified of the guy being dangerous like some others are suggesting (which I think is ridiculous), how about knocking on your coaches door, or general managers door?

If the guys first defense was to run home to mommy and daddy, then I don't care what any of you think, imo he's a sissy. A sissy that I do feel bad for, but a sissy nonetheless.

I guess Schiano is going to have some competition to be the first coach fired this year. Philbin should be toast.
Agreed, surprised if he makes it another month.
How do you feel about Pouncey? Seems like he was involved here too as well as the Hernandez stuff.

Ireland too, these were all players he brought in.

Like the NCAA throws around: "lack of instiutional control"
You make a great point Slap, I expect Goodell to force Ross into firing the GM/Coach, and cutting Pouncey and Incognito plus anyone else that had direct involvement. Martin will be told he is welcome to come back to the team and I want to believe that the remaining players int he locker room will reach out to him and say they would feel honored if he would come back to the team...I doubt that all happens though as Martin is now suing his employer.

I'm about two steps from hanging up my Phins allegiance, I really hate everything about this team and have a hard time defending much of it. Add in all the stuff I disagree with Goodell has done including bountygate, the new rules, it just is not the same NFL I grew up on and the "drama" has taken over the league IMO. It's not about what happens on the field any more.

Just a hunch, but I bet the stuff we know today is just the tip of the iceberg. Suspect there's plenty more out there to make this clear enough that even the mouth breathers can figure it out.
It's hard to breathe out of your mouth when someone defecates in it.

Absolutely.

Without minimizing the very real impact of discrimination at all, I can safely say Id rather be called whatever slur you can come up with than be the subject of physical violence.

Because those were the same people that installed Incognito into a leadership position on the team. That's called a rock and a hard place.

My opinion of you has changed.

Tons of people said Riley Cooper would never play another down in the NFL because of racist comments. Then he scored a few TDs and everything is fine. This will die down.
With Foles - yes. But it looks like Mike Vick won't throw it to him.

It IS the same but now this stuff is out in the open and you (and all of us) are being forced to reevaluate our interest now that the curtain has been drawn back.

I have to say, my interest in the NFL lessens almost daily.

I think the headline makes him sound like a white supremacist who really wanted to kill the guy and assault his mother. I don't think this is the case. I think he was just being a bully, and harassing the guy. No doubt Incognito probably has a screw loose, but do you all really think he wanted to kill the guy?
I'll take the statements of a person that was formerly an in-patient at a mental health facility due to his uncontrollable violent nature at face value.

Andy, do you really think I want to see players inured, really? Do you think I want players extorting money from other players?

I'm a little emotional, I'm sorry.

Comparing Incognito to Cooper is ridic. Cooper is guilty of being a drunken idiot while using a racial slur. Incognito is guilty of threatening death on a person while using a racial slur. One of these is a crime.

I'm about two steps from hanging up my Phins allegiance, I really hate everything about this team and have a hard time defending much of it. We are in the same boat, the curtain being pulled back is an excellent analogy, very sad.

Yeah, assuming nothing comes out about Martin, he is the only one of these that should be with the Phins next year.

I'm feeling you there. At least the Gamecocks won on Sat.

It has been reported that Martin went to Philbin in the spring.

I think this is an excellent point... soft, rich, prep-school kid runs into a POS that other POS's point to and say, "wow, what a POS!"

BOOM!
