Dolphin's Playoff Question (1 Viewer)

If GB wins tonight, do the Dolphins control their own destiny? They play Jacksonville and Pittsburg. Is there any way they don't get in at 10-6?

IF GB wins tonight I believe they do control their own destiny if they win out. HUGE game vs Jacksonville next week.Last weeks loss vs the Bills really sucks right now.GO PACKERS !!!

I don't think that is correct.

Baltimore can still be a 10 and 6 team with an 8 and 4 conference record. Miami can still be a 10 and 6 team with an 8 and 4 conference record.

So, assuming both teams tie for the last WC spot at 10 and 6, then it goes to common opponents. The common opponents are Pit, Indy, NE and SD.

Miami would be 2-3 against common opponents (W: NE, Pit, L: NE, Indy, SD). Baltimore would be 3-2 against common opponents (W: Pit X2, SD, L: Indy, NE).

Baltimore's schedule gets real easy after tonight. Miami needs a GB win tonight and Pittsburg to beat the Ravens in Week 16. That may set up a play in game in week 17 - Pittsburg at Miami.

the playoffs started for the Dolphins yesterday

If they make it this year it will be a bonus. Really impressed with Henne yesterday. They have found their QB. Now I hope they get him a true #1 WR before next year.

Why aren't you thinking more about a division title? If you go 10-6, it isn't far-fetched at all if the Pats lose again:

Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs). (1-1)Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division. (4-2) each if the Pats lose to Jax or Hou, (3-3) if the Pats lose to BufBest won-lost-tied percentage in common games. (8-4) each if both finish 10 and 6Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference. Pats (7-5 if loss to Buf, Jax or Hou), (8-4 if loss to Car). Miami (8-4)Strength of victory. (who knows - only gets to this point if Pats loss is to Carolina)

Dolphins only need to win one more than the Pats win in the next 4 games, and they win the division. They currently have a better division record, and split games with NE, so if both teams finish with the same record, MIA wins the division, and NE probably doesn't make the playoffs at all.Of course, MIA faces @Jax, @Ten, Hou, PitAnd NE faces Car, @Buf, Jax, @ HouSo NE has the easier schedule, and I predicted a few weeks ago that NE wins 3 of those 4 games. So Miami has a tougher hill to climb with Ten and Pitt, as opposed to Car and Buf. But if Miami can win out, and NE loses one game, MIA takes the AFC East.Basically, it's a stretch that MIA does it, but NE seems to be imploding a bit, and MIA is a better team than their record indicates. So anything is possible.

I'm hoping like hell the Bills can play spoiler and beat NE @ Buffalo. The 90's are over and my hate for Miami is dwindling. I hope Miami wins the division and the Pats miss the playoffs once again.

Ravens lucked out last year when the Jets tanked vs. the Dolphins and let them cruise into the playoffs instead of the Patriots. This year, Pats hold the head-to-head tie-breaker over the Ravens, so Baltimore fans have to hope they don't end up in a Wild Card tie with New England.

My guess is that this year every 10-win team in the AFC gets in, but that no 9-win team makes it. Last year, 11 wins didn't assure the Pats of a spot.

Being a Dolphins fan is painful. I wrote them off after the Buffalo loss (which was huge), but now they give me hope (probably false) again by beating NE.The way that I see it is that Dolphins are in if they win out and if either Bal or NE loses once (unless NE's sole remaining loss is to CAR, which would make things complicated since the division would go to NE or MIA based on the strength of victory)I'm less worried about Bal or NE losing one than I am about the Dolphins winning out. Dolphins are going to lose at least one.

I'm kinda feeling uncomfortable here. Dolphins can win out and still get edged out of the playoffs if New England also wins out or if their win 3 out of the next 4 and that loss isn't to an AFC opponent. I'm really praying that either Buffalo or Houston steps up here with New England being a road team on both of those matchups. We all know that Jacksonville is absolutely not a road team and while on any given Sunday and all that schtick, I give Jacksonville no chance to win at Gillette Stadium.Tonight's Pack win over Baltimore is about half of the outside help that the Dolphins will need to nail down a Wildcard spot if they were to win out and go 10 - 6 for the season. Would still need another key loss by either the Broncos or the Ravens in order to make it a reality. I already have the Broncos pegged to go 2 and 2 for their remaining 4 games with losses to Indy and Philadelphia but they'd need to go 1 and 3 to give up their 6th seeded Wildcard spot and I don't see them losing to either the Raiders or KC with both of those being home games at Mile High. I see more chance to squeak in if the Ravens don't win out their remaining 4 games and drop one to either Chicago (unlikely) or to Pittsburgh (possible if the team can recover). All in all though, I don't think we can run the table for the last 4 games of the season. This weekend in Jacksonville is a huge game for us and I'm fairly confident that one is a win. Week 15 at Tennessee I'm a bit more leary of but I also feel that it's a winnable game. Week 16 hosting Houston is where I start to feel pretty queasy as I don't think our secondary can keep up with Houston's offense. I love what the future holds with Vontae Davis and Sean Smith but they are getting little to no help from the safety position. Week 17 hosting Pittsburgh is also potentially a tough game depending upon which Steelers team shows up.

C'mon Phins, I know you can do it!
Biggest phin fan you can find, and I do not want a road playoff game and a worse draft pick. This team is playoff contender, but not superbowl contender. I hope we develop players these last 4 games, and draft (and acquire) more studs for a "championship" contender.I will be happy if we make the playoffs, sure, but at the same time I just want us to keep getting better.

Boy, that win from even one of those Indy/New Orleans games they looked to be in control of really would have been nice right now.

Agree with both of you.Last weeks L to the Bills really stings. The way they came back and beat the Pats this week was nice to see. I had no expectations for this team this year - almost hope they lose out their remaining games to get a better draft pick. But they continue to fight - just like last year. Henne is growing up right in front of our eyes. They went toe to toe with both the Colts & Saints and had a real good shot at winning both of them.Draft or sign a true #1 WR. Really like Bess as a slot WR - he's like a Welker Lite.Improve the LB positionShore up the secondary. They do those 3 things and I'll have at least playoff expectations for 2010 and this board will be sick of me by Week 8.

i agree that any 10-6 team gets in but it is also likely that a 9-7 team makes it, especially if the colts, bengals and chargers keep racking up wins against potential wildcard teams.

The Steelers loss tonight gives Miami slightly more wiggle room. But they still need the Steelers to beat the Ravens.

Eh, they have to win out, including beating Pittsburgh to have a chance anyway, so this loss likely won't matter.
