Donald Driver's father beaten - In ICU (1 Viewer)

News and radio in Milwaukee is reporting that Driver left the team and flew to Houston to be with his father who is in intensive care after allegedly being beaten by Houston cops. I dont have a link but according to WSSP 1250 in Milwaukee, he was stopped by police and was to be taken into custody for outstanding traffic warrant(s). Later he was found a few blocks from his home, bloody and unconscious where he was then taken to a hospital by paramedics.

Again, I dont have a link yet but apparently Houston police have issued a statement refuting the allegations.

HOUSTON -- The father of Packers star Donald Driver is in a Houston hospital following an arrest and alleged beating early Monday morning.

Houston police said Marvin Driver Jr. was arrested during a traffic stop and put in the back seat of a squad car and taken to the city's Southeast Jail.

Upon arrival at the jail, officers said Driver Jr. was unresponsive. Once examined by doctors, paradmedics were called and he was taken to an area hospital.

According to Driver Jr.'s family, before officers detained hime the police and Driver's family got into an argument which lead to another argument with Driver Jr. about the language in which the officers were using with his family.

Driver Jr.'s family alleged that Driver Jr. never made it to the jail but was picked up by the paramedics several blocks from his parents home laying in the street bloody and unconscious, and the police were no where to be found.

The family said Driver Jr. is in intensive care where he can't even speak. It said doctors said there is some bleeding on his brain from blunt force trauma.

He is communicating by writing notes (pictured above right).

Houston police said its Internal Affairs Division will investigate the misconduct allegations.

"We take allegations such as these very seriously and will begin a thorough investigation into the matter. The two officers remain on duty pending further investigation," according to Houston police.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy declined to comment on the situation Wednesday afternoon, saying it would be inappropriate. He said that Driver has been excused from practice but that the wide receiver is expected to play Monday night.

Furthers my dislike for officers of the "law". Driver seems like a top-notch fellow. You don't get that way without good parents. He'll be in my thoughts.

I agree with McCarthy that it is inappropriate to comment at this point, but nonetheless will just say that Donald Driver is a truly a great professional, an excellent representative of the Packers and the NFL and a wonderful person by all accounts so my heart goes out to him upon reading this.

How does this affect Driver's numbers for this week?
This is why this post belongs in the FFA.It's just kind of offensive to think a guys father got beat down by the police and is in bad shape and someone out there is wondering if it's gonna affect his statistics in a football GAME. This isn't a rip on you piratemike, believe me I actually was wondering the same exact thing and that's why this thread should be moved.

I apologize. I thought the Shark Pool was "reserved for sharing NFL talk and fantasy football strategy discussion."I dont have a problem if it gets moved. I've seen threads moved FROM there with less NFL impact than this. I just thought people should know about this situation. ;)

Who let you out of the drunk thread? If true, I hope they come down hard on the officers.

:sadbanana: Hope he makes a complete recovery, and I hope those cops go away for life, or worse.
Unfortunately, the police union is corrupt and they will just move the bad officers a couple counties away and make them use their middle name. Trust me, I have one in the development. It's sad but every time I hear a cop is shot I run to the TV and hope it's him. I then pray for the poor cop that got shot.....

Got to spend a day at Drivers house this past may and he's a very solid family orientated dude. In fact the only reason I was at his house is he was hosting a pool party for his 5 year old son who "graduated" from his daycare school which my daughter also attends. He took me on a tour of his house and showed me a bunch of photo's. He had more photo's of his dad in his house than anything and every time he came across a photo of his dad he would proudly announce that's my dad right there. I hope the best for the Drivers.

Wow. Thanks for sharing that. Put's a whole different spin on a situation when you hear a story that makes an NFL player an actual human being and not a stat line.

We get stuff like this in the SP all the time.

Should be pretty easy to find out what happened from the paramedics themselves and any records that were made.

:bag: Seriously....I find it very disturbing that so many are so quick to pile on cops. Piling on the specific cops in question is one thing (even though nothing is proven), but all cops is ridiculous. It's exactly that attitude that contributes to crimes of all sorts in the first place! (When we'd rather hate on the enforcers of the law then the crimnals.)

Agree with comments about waiting for more information....

Having said that, it would seem that IF the man was picked up by cops (and therefore called in, witnessed, etc.), and then left bloody in the street, it's going to turn out quite badly for the officers involved.

Here's hoping for a speedy return to good health for Driver Sr.

This might be the most ridiculous post in here. How is this similar to Benson? When was Benson beaten til the point of having a tube in his mouth in ICU?

You aren't alone in expressing this about Donald. I have heard many also say he treats strangers like friends. I hope his father recovers and they look at how they treat people in Houston. It doesn't have a good reputation.

No kidding. Acquitted for traffic warrants? I hope he recovers from the beating.

And yes...since some have brought it up...Donald Driver did have a checkered past and turned himself around quite a bit.Just a little snippet about him growing up

Donald Driver and his four siblings spent time living in the back of a U-haul truck. Driver sold drugs; he stole cars. His father was in jail. He has a very troubled and checkered past. He was able to turn his life around, though, gaining an athletic scholarship to Alcorn St and battling onto the roster from a lowly 7th round draft pick. He has since been granted the “Walter Payton Man of the Year” and the “Ed Block Courage” awards for his extensive work in the community, including his foundation that offers assistance to underprivileged and homeless families. He has also received contract extensions through hard work and without the threat of hold-outs, for what that’s worth.

Sorry bro` but sometimes it`s hard to tell the difference between the cops and the criminals...and that should NEVER even come into question...sad actually...anyways i hope the truth comes out and someone goes down for this ''crime''

This is the typical response of course. A few bad eggs leads to not knowing the difference between cops and criminals?

We should wait until the facts come out about the case, unless you were there it is absurd to make blanket statments from either side.

Pfff this is nothing. Remember when Steve Foley was shot by that cop? There was a guy here that said it's OK for try to run over a cop with your car if you suspect that person may not be a police officer.

no...it means its getting harder to tell which cops are good and which are crooked...and it should never come down to that.

If this is true, those cops deserve all the piling on in this thread. But not law enforcement in general. The majority of officers are not like that. The officers that are good solid officers absolutely detest officers that act as thugs. Meanwhile these good officers go to work every day laying there life on the line to protect citizens' lives, homes, and businesses. Imagine being shot at by some guy ripped out of his mind on meth who is robbing a local ma and pa corner store. These are the types of things that good officers do every day around our country. Yet despite that they get called pigs and treated with a great amount of disrespect.

Any profession, race, religious group, etc has at least a few scum buckets in it. To simply write off that whole group as trash is ignorant and stereotypical.

limited information from the paramedics and community activist near the end.

HOUSTON -- The father of Green Bay Packers wide receiver Donald Driver was beaten by Houston, Texas, police officers as they arrested him for outstanding traffic warrants, Driver's family members claimed Wednesday.

As they beat him and forced him to swallow something, the officers told Marvin Driver Jr. he was "going to see Jesus," according to relatives and community activist Quanell Evans, who identified himself as Quanell X.

"Mr. Marvin Driver Jr. is now at Hermann Hospital in ICU where he can't even speak," relatives said in a statement. "Doctors say there is some bleeding on his brain from blunt force trauma."

Police said Driver was arrested for outstanding traffic warrants and was found to be "unresponsive" upon his arrival at jail. Paramedics transported him to the hospital, they said. The Houston Police Department said in a written statement it takes the assault allegations "very seriously, and will begin a thorough investigation into the matter."

The two officers involved remain on duty pending further investigation, police said. However, relatives and Evans called for the officers involved to be suspended or placed on administrative leave until the investigation is complete.

The incident began late Sunday when Driver was dropping his brother, Winston Driver, off after the two had moved furniture, family members said.

Officers stopped Marvin Driver Jr. in front of his mother's home, relatives said. An argument took place between police and Driver's family, as well as between Driver and officers over the language police were using, according to the written statement issued by family members.

Police told relatives Driver was being taken to jail for the outstanding warrants, relatives said. "Later, the family found out he never made it to the jail," the statement said.

Relatives at first alleged Driver was picked up several blocks away by paramedics and that he was lying bloody and unconscious in the street. However, Evans told reporters Wednesday afternoon he had spoken to paramedics, and they had told him they had picked Driver up at the jail, and that he was injured, semiconscious and unresponsive when they arrived.

Houston Fire Department spokesman Omero Longoria told CNN Driver was picked up at a police substation and taken to the hospital. He said he did not know when Driver arrived at the jail or what his condition was when paramedics arrived.

Evans showed reporters paper towels upon which he said Driver had written his account. On them, he said Driver wrote that the police took him behind a Valero gas station and beat him. The officers kneed Driver and elbowed him in the throat, Evans said. They also made him swallow something, he said, telling him he was "going to see Jesus" and made disparaging remarks about his family, including "one particular family member."

One officer parked his cruiser behind the station and watched the beating, the activist alleged. Evans showed reporters photographs he said depicted Driver lying a hospital bed with a tube in his mouth.

One of the officers named in the arrest report is Hispanic and has a history of harassing African-Americans, Evans said. Driver also wrote on the paper towels that he knows the officer who beat him, Evans said. Winston Driver said at the news conference that after his brother dropped him off, he saw flashing lights from the house and went back outside.

"The officer I spoke with, he was real rude," he said. "The guy was out of control, basically." He said he searched for his brother for two days, only to be told he wasn't in the system. "I got totally upset about it," he said. Nothing in the police report indicates Driver was being combative or resisting arrest, Evans said.

"It is a shame how this man was treated. This is a man that was being arrested supposedly for only having traffic warrants, and traffic warrants turned into a severe beating of this magnitude."

He said he had spoken to Donald Driver, but would not divulge details of the conversation, saying only that "he is absolutely concerned about the condition of his father."

Another of Driver's sons, Michael, told reporters, "if we can't trust these people, who can we trust? ... I think that my father was targeted for being black."

has there been a statement issued by the police yet?

Would they not have immediately denied it if it were false? I mean the guy was at the police station all messed up. Wouldnt the ONLY way the police would be clean here if they found him on the side of the road, grabbed him and quickly rushed him to this station because the station was the halfway point or something? So by cutting the distance down to the paramedics? I just cant even think of any other reason he ends up at the station and not the hospital first.

Otherwise what possible excuse could there be? Are they saying he pounded his own head in at the station?

Anything short of those two things it is inexcusable.

Wasn't meant to be a justification, but an explanation. There is a very real problem with the way many folks view and work with police. In some places, it's so bad that we shouldn't be surprised when individual members of the police force snap back. Please don't misunderstand me. I think if cops are found guilty of a crime like this...their punishment should be double that of an ordinary citizen. I am in no way condoning or excusing bad behavior by policemen.

What I'm condemning in no small way is the near-automatic piling on to police in general. This cop screwed up, so all cops are pigs not to be trusted. By that logic, one criminal murders dozens, so all criminals should be treated like cold blooded murderers. (Hey.....jaywalking is still a crime, isn't it?)

Get it?

we should be surprised when police strike back. We should ALWAYS be shocked and upset. If people thinking that they were bad is enough to push them over the edge into corruption, then they were already 99% of the way there.these would be the same "good" cops who only went bad because they were having financial hardship and those drugs were just sitting there or that pile of cash.

A big reason why people group everybody together is because of the way they stick together. Lets take this example. The police dept has released almost nothing. I want to hear why Driver's dad was picked up at a police substation beat to hell. Why does it take this long to release a statement? The officers in question are still on duty. If they are still on duty then the dept better have good reason why they think those officers are innocent. As a public funded institution, they owe the city of houston that explanation.

How does this affect Driver's numbers for this week?
I am wondering the same exact thing - as most are whether they admit it or notWhile I feel terrible about Driver's father's condition & I wish him a complete & speedy recoveryDriver's #s this weekend are the only thing that directly affects me & that is my main reason for reading this thread.

Sad story no matter what the cause was.

I'm just waiting for the day when one sick and crazy FFer does something like this to a player or player's family member because of some dumb championship game or whatever. There are a bunch of sick &*^%%s out there.
