The harsh reality is that David Stern repeatedly turned a blind eye to racist transgressions from Sterling in the view of some due to their shared religious affiliation. Silver will be forced to act harshly but Sterling should have been out of the league long ago.

Still trying to wrap my head around the NAACP wanting to give Sterling his second lifetime award.
I think he donated money.
I don't know about that, but this was a reason given for the first award in 2009:

Clippers owner Donald Sterling, accused of racism and embracing a "vision of a Southern plantation-type structure" in a lawsuit filed in February by Elgin Baylor, will be given a lifetime achievement award next week by the NAACP. . . .

Leon Jenkins, president of the Los Angeles branch of the civil rights organization, says of the much-maligned Sterling, "He has a unique history of giving to the children of L.A.," revealing that the owner donates anywhere from 2,000 to 3,000 tickets a game to youth groups for nearly every Clippers home game.

Noting that the NAACP had made plans to honor Sterling before Baylor filed suit, Jenkins says, "We can't speak to the allegations, but what we do know is that for the most part [sterling] has been very, very kind to the minority youth community."

I read this on Deadspin earlier and it made this more confusing for me. Unless it was the Clippers organization and their PR department helping the kids, based on Leon's comments, some of Sterling's actions don't seem like things a racist would do. Odd

Exactly. He donated money (in the form of tickets).

As I wrote earlier- I suspect he's a paternalistic racist. Gives money to black causes, but doesn't see them as equal.

Assuming that's all he did. Tickets for the kids are great, but I'm not sure if it's grounds for TWO lifetime achievement awards. Also, tickets seem like a team promotion, and while I know he is the owner, this could easily have been done by an employee.

Frankly, I'm tired of the whole racist schtick. My wife has some black ancestry, I have regularly had black people, native Americans and Asians at my table for dinner, I have had close business associates that I have promoted who are of different racial backgrounds, but I am tired of the thought control implicit in pillorying anyone who fails to think the proper thoughts and express the proper politically correct opinions.

Agreed.

Take the poll!
No.

Racism isn't a spectrum disorder with varying degrees of severity. You are, or you aren't.
Um, I dunno, I wouldn't group anyone who exhibits some mild racism with members of the Ku Klux Klan.
Can we get an Offdee-type rating system for what is an acceptable level of racism?

Like, a certain level is acceptable in your home, a different level when among like-colored friends, a level for mixed-racial company, what is acceptable at work (employee) and work (employer)?

Imagine the flack if that was on the Instagrams.

Another federal lawsuit filed in 2003 by the Housing Rights Center and 19 tenants accused Sterling of once stating his preference not to rent to Latinos because “Hispanics smoke, drink and just hang around the building.” The lawsuit also accused him of saying “black tenants smell and attract vermin.”

The allegations included Sterling’s properties not renting to non-Koreans in Koreatown or African Americans in Beverly Hills.

According to the lawsuit, Sterling believed Korean-American tenants “will live in whatever conditions he gives them and still pay the rent without complaint.”

I don't know. What if I like to bang black chicks but don't want black dudes banging my sister......is that racist?
racist and a homophobe.
How is it racist though if I like black chicks?....or, more importantly I like all colors of women and I won't kick a black chick out of bed. Isn't that being sexily equal to all varieties of women?

And what is homophobia have to do with anything?

It was so awesome not knowing who Cliven Bundy was until just now.

Leave it to FFA to bring me the news so that I can pretty much skip the "political moments du jour" threads.

Say you have a person who is completely race neutral, but they don't do anything to help minorities. Then you have Sterling, who may (or may not) think they are "equal", but does a lot to help. Who's making more of a difference?
