I think he donated money.Still trying to wrap my head around the NAACP wanting to give Sterling his second lifetime award.

And Cliven hasn't even goften his first one yet! That's unfair.Still trying to wrap my head around the NAACP wanting to give Sterling his second lifetime award.
I don't know about that, but this was a reason given for the first award in 2009:I think he donated money.Still trying to wrap my head around the NAACP wanting to give Sterling his second lifetime award.
Clippers owner Donald Sterling, accused of racism and embracing a "vision of a Southern plantation-type structure" in a lawsuit filed in February by Elgin Baylor, will be given a lifetime achievement award next week by the NAACP. . . .
Leon Jenkins, president of the Los Angeles branch of the civil rights organization, says of the much-maligned Sterling, "He has a unique history of giving to the children of L.A.," revealing that the owner donates anywhere from 2,000 to 3,000 tickets a game to youth groups for nearly every Clippers home game.
Noting that the NAACP had made plans to honor Sterling before Baylor filed suit, Jenkins says, "We can't speak to the allegations, but what we do know is that for the most part [sterling] has been very, very kind to the minority youth community."

Racism isn't a spectrum disorder with varying degrees of severity. You are, or you aren't.
I read this on Deadspin earlier and it made this more confusing for me. Unless it was the Clippers organization and their PR department helping the kids, based on Leon's comments, some of Sterling's actions don't seem like things a racist would do. OddI don't know about that, but this was a reason given for the first award in 2009:I think he donated money.Still trying to wrap my head around the NAACP wanting to give Sterling his second lifetime award.

Assuming that's all he did. Tickets for the kids are great, but I'm not sure if it's grounds for TWO lifetime achievement awards. Also, tickets seem like a team promotion, and while I know he is the owner, this could easily have been done by an employee.Exactly. He donated money (in the form of tickets).I don't know about that, but this was a reason given for the first award in 2009:I think he donated money.Still trying to wrap my head around the NAACP wanting to give Sterling his second lifetime award.

In 2009, Sterling agreed to a $2.765-million settlement in a case that alleged discrimination against African Americans, Latinos and others at apartment buildings he owned in Los Angeles County.

Another federal lawsuit filed in 2003 by the Housing Rights Center and 19 tenants accused Sterling of once stating his preference not to rent to Latinos because “Hispanics smoke, drink and just hang around the building.” The lawsuit also accused him of saying “black tenants smell and attract vermin.”
The allegations included Sterling’s properties not renting to non-Koreans in Koreatown or African Americans in Beverly Hills.
According to the lawsuit, Sterling believed Korean-American tenants “will live in whatever conditions he gives them and still pay the rent without complaint.”

Baylor quoted Sterling as saying: 'Personally, I would like to have a white Southern coach coaching poor black players.'

Say you have a person who is completely race neutral, but they don't do anything to help minorities. Then you have Sterling, who may (or may not) think they are "equal", but does a lot to help.
