From Rotoworld. Does anyone believe this will have a material impact on Edwards this year?
Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson says this is the healthiest he's been in his career.
Johnson, who was nagged by ankle injuries throughout 2006, appears to be playing the strong side in Kansas City now, despite early reports that Donnie Edwards would take over at the SAM. Edwards is at right outside linebacker.
The vets know that we often post links describing FBG content in here, but don't routinely nauseating pimp it. So, forgive me if I point out to the newbies that everyone here at FBG (vet posters and staffers alike) were in agreement that Donnie Edwards was the ROLB from the day he signed. There was no official report that Edwards would play LOLB or SLB. There was rampant incorrect speculation and analysis about it.
Again, I don't do this often and we're not right every time, but this is the best spot for IDP information anywhere. There was a post on another board this week that was still arguing that Edwards was a SLB. Okay, shilling over.

In fact, the major issue with the Chiefs LB situation is not that Edwards was surprisingly shifted to ROLB. It is that the Chiefs are playing much more Cover-2 and that they are NOT keeping their LBs in a right-left alignment this year. There are certain defensive situations where Edwards will play over the TE, but Edwards is a WLB this year, not a ROLB.
Johnson's numbers are likely to be about the same as they've been in the past. He's talented enough to overcome some of the limitations of the strong side and could still approach 80 solo tackles. But he'll remain a bye week replacement/LB4 type value this year. And, given what we've seen in the preseason, he won't be cutting into Edwards' value much at all.
