The youth movement at safety has officially begun, as the Jaguars informed Donovin Darius on Thursday morning that the team was releasing him. So ends the Jaguars career of the player who has started more games than any other defensive player in franchise history.

An influx of young talent at the safety position would seem to be at the root of Darius’ release. He’s coming off a season in which he sustained a broken leg in a week-11 game against the New York Giants. He missed 14 games in 2005 after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.

The Jaguars used their 2007 first-round draft choice on safety Reggie Nelson, then added safety Josh Gattis in round five. Third-year safety Gerald Sensabaugh is expected to step into a starting spot.

Darius had been sidelined during spring practices while he recovered from his broken leg.

Jaguars.com will update this story following Thursday morning’s practice.

So I guess pencial in Nelson and Sensabaugh as the starters. Keep your eyes on Gattis as well.

On another note, this could be a precursor to bringing Culpepper in. Shaving off the salary of a higher priced veteran to free up some cap room.

I say Miami...they have a bunch of fill-in type Sateties and could use him. Plus, not too far from home for him.

Don't know if it matters much, but Darius and McNabb were not only Syracuse teammates but roomates. Love to see him in Eagle green but don't think it likely.

Is Darius a FS or a SS.<imagining Darius and Dawkins together in a defensive secondary>
 Be nice to have him to mentor Considine. Be nice to have him for insurance in case Considine doesn't cut it too. Can't see him coming here though.

1) Darius is a strong safety. Darius + Dawkins = lots of hitting but lacking in coverage. Darius to Eagles? :excited:

2)Why now? Some people locally are saying that it's to clear cap space for C-Pep. This makes no sense since the Jags are way under the cap.

3)My own cynical personal conspiracy theory. The Jags cut Darius to save cash, not cap space. I haven't checked the particulars but part of the revenue sharing is that each club must spend a minimum amount per year. If they sign C-pep, Darius' salary wouldn't have been necessary to cross the minimum threshold.

:lmao:

Pats need 50 DBs to enter the season, they should add Darius. He can sit on the beach til one of the S get hurt

Is this the "let's all sit around trading unfounded speculation that Darius might wind up on our favorite team" thread? Because if so, I'd like to point out that Denver has a well-documented love of aging safeties who are tremendous hitters and lacking in coverage...

You are drfinitely in the right thread. That is what this is for, save an occasional post by a JAX homer.

I'd like to bring him in. He can't be any worse in coverage then Lynch or Ferguson.

Lets be honest, who are they going to need to cover this year?

Really good thought...Parker/Jackson, Kennison/Parker, Curry/Porter...talk about "walk-in-the-park".

Denver will be much more of a man coverage scheme than the Cover-2 they used last year. So it'll be Tomlinson, Gates, Johnson, Gonzalez and Jordan on those teams not the so-so WR talent.

I thought he was referring to the CB duo of Bailey and Bly having people locked down. This makes sense too though.

Against SD and KC, Denver has often matched Bailey up against Gates/Gonzo, or else they'll play their "big nickle" (nickle defense, but three safeties instead of three CBs), and Denver often assigned coverage responsibilities to Gold and Wilson (both of whom were top-notch coverage LBs). I suspect Bailey, Brandon, Williams, and Gold will be seeing a lot more time on the Gateses and Gonzos of the world than Lynch/Ferguson will.

This guy is all confused if the talk isn't about Broncos

Agreed. If you can, watch the game plan that Bates put together against the Falcons the one year he DCd in Green Bay. He not only took Vick out of the game, he nullified Crumpler as well, using mostly LB coverage (with a combination of man and zone) while the safeties played deep.
