Don't look now, but Willis McGahee is quietly... (1 Viewer)

Just looked up the leaders by position in one of my leagues (.1 per 1 yard, 4 pt rush TD, 6 pt recv TD, -2 fumbles, .2 per reception),

and Willis McGahee is the #3 RB. I know there's a bunch of great stories (Derrick Ward, Ronnie Brown, AP), but I think everyone is aware of how they are fairing. McGahee I don't think so.

He's had ONE TD... a reception.

He's had ONE 100 yard game, and that barely made it with 104.

We know how this is possible, given some of the injuries, but being ahead of the non-busts like FWP, Travis Henry, etc... much less the busts LJ, SJax, Gore, Shaun, etc...

Funny as the guy has rarely been in the top 10 weekly rankings...which I don't blame folks like F'Guys... just noone else is really having expected breakout games, while McGahee is trodding along. He's not winning weeks for owners, but providing solid filler of points base.

The guy is being as the complete, everydown back that he was supposed to be coming out of college. Through 5 weeks he already has his typical season in receiving yards since the Ravens use him in the passing game. From a total yards perspective, he's been over 100 every week. He's more like 10'ish in my league, but also, I think the scores will come, so he should only get better for his owners.

I figured he'd fair differently under differing scoring systems (PPR of 1/rec, 100 yd plateaus, long run bonuses). He was one of those skeptical players before the draft. Imagine if he can have a breakout game... although I've noticed the redzone action has been appauling... which I'm not a fan of the play calling this year (have watched 3 Ravens games).

how are the TDs gonna come? this is one of the worst, most painful Os in the league to watch. Theyve already played Cinci and Clev and are yet to play Pitt. I dont see this Balt team scoring many TDs this season. If he's really ranked as high as guys are mentioning, sounds to me like McGahee is an ideal 'sell high' candidate. These guys are about as painful a unit to watch as there is in the league.

The offense may be extremely boring, but it's not that bad. They move the ball and get yards. TDs will come.edited to add; Plus, while the defense may not be what it was last year, it's still good and will keep most games close and provide turnovers and good field position for the offense.

I don't own McGahee but given what's going on at the RB position this season it would take an awful lot for me to part with someone who is consistently putting up Top 10 production. McGahee may not be having many huge games but he clearly isn't hurting his fantasy owners from week to week. That has huge value this season given how many RB1s are having so many issues.

I don't think I've ever seen an offense that dinks and dunks more than this Ravens team but that is actually helping Mcgahee in PPR leagues. I was wrong about Mcgahee's ability to catch the ball. I drafted him last year when I heard the Bills were going to install the Rams offense after hiring ex-Ram OC Steve Fairchild. Willis not only failed to catch many passes but A-Train did when Willis got hurt and to me it looked like Willis was just plain sucked in the passing game. When I read Billick say this off season he thought Willis would catch 50 passes I brushed it off as a puff piece. I did not have a high opinion of Willis but still ended up drafting him in the late second round of my main league because there were not a lot of options. So far he is exceeding my expectations and he's got a nice schedule coming up but both he and the Ravens need to do a better job in the red zone

Not to take anything away from McGahee, but this is pretty much more an indictment of just how bad RBs have been in general this year. There's no way McGahee should be the #3 RB with what he's done. Maybe back half of the top 10, but not top 3.

I recall CLE moving the ball decently years back and droughns had 2 TDs...
How was their defense? How was their turnover ratio? Also, Droughns is not a very effective GL back. McGahee has been better at the stripe over his career.

I know he scored 13 TD's a few years ago but he has only rushed for 11 TD's over his last 686 rushing attempts which is horrible. It's hard to blame it on the Ravens scheme when he had the same problems last year. IIRC prior to getting hurt last season he was leading the AFC in rushing after 6 weeks but only ran for one TD. The Ravens as a team are not doing a good job in the red zone and as a Willis owner I hope they keep feeding him but I'm not sure if he's part of the problem or the solution.

I'm going by successful goal line attempts over his career.

oh, its that bad. 5 FGs and a single TD in the past 2 weeks against Cleveland and Frisco, which would have been 2 games any proud McGahee would have circled on the calendar as potential TD games. Stick with him if that's what the market dictates. There are certainly plenty of RB health issues around the league, so thru attrition I can see how he's top 10. Just dont expect a bunch of magical TDs to appear on his stat column. All that work's gonna get the guy killed sooner or later with the 3 rookies on the Oline.

Cleveland I have no excuse for besides the fact that they were behind early. SF has a good defense this year though. They have held running backs in check across the board for the most part.

Bump. I was really impressed with the 7 passes McGahee caught this week against the 49ers. In five outings to date, he has hauled in 18 passes for 143 yards and a touchdown. Now if we can get a few more TDs Willis will really shoot up into the top of the RB heap and maybe end up top 3-5? This guy had to be a buy low right now. Thoughts?

100 = arbitrary number.

How many 95 yard games does he have? If that was "the number" then this would be a different conversation. He has been uber solid. He likely wont be great - but not many RBs look to be this year. That said, I would expect a couple 2 TD games this season that will really help some owners win games.

Well lets hope one of those 2 TD games start this week against the RAMS 27th rank run defense....hoping here.

Was just thinking... if we see the same ol this week... via 89 yards rushing 35 receiving on 4 receptions and zero TDs... I'm guessing we won't see a scoring explosion in the second half of the season... expect sub 8 TDs. My guess is he'll be ranked #3 or #4 this week... and wind up around #10-15 again... which is what he's been doing. Hope I'm wrong.

As a Willis owner, I think the TD's will come as the offense gets better as McNair and Clayton become healthy. But even if they don't, Ill take what Im getting.

My favorite stat and what I like to draft for is consistency. Consistency gets you wins and consistency gets you FF championships.

Even with only 1 TD, Willis has been giving me 12-13 point games every single week. I think the OP said he's been a good fill-in, for me I consider him to be a great starter.

He'll be a fixture in my lineup until he quits putting up 125 total yards each week

The importance of that arbitrary number depends on the scoring of your league; mine happens to be a TD league with bonus at 100 yards. I haven't seen any points from McGahee's 90-something yard games. He is great for PPR leagues, TD + yard bonus not so much.

Fortunately I only play in high performance leagues which means in the league I have him he's got 11 points YTD. But-Vs Cincinnati but for Musa Smith & Billick's imbicility over the final handful of plays inside the 5, he could have had 2 TD's there

and look at the schedule! Anyone playing fractional points is surely not stout enough to have week 17 on the schedule for one of the meetings with PGH; Clev & Cincy again, weaker pair of their NFC opponents, Buf, Mia & the Chargelettes! There could be something there!
