funny -- although it 'seems' true as i can't find the video on YouTube or any other source...i know somebody at FBG must have this or at least be able to point me in the right direction!and WHY would it be so hard to find? it's practically a legendary play!Didn't the NFL confiscate all the Patriot's tapes?
NFL videos are aggressively removed from youtube, for obvious reasons. You can see a quick flash of the drop kick by going to nfl.com, click on videos->search and searching for Doug Flutie. It's at the very end of a segment about him being the #9 most mobile quarterback.and WHY would it be so hard to find? it's practically a legendary play!
awesome. and thanks... going to click on it right now!first i gotta go pop some corn
----just viewed it--- kinda weak--- its sort of a far-away camera shot and is cut short with no audio except for a voice-over.--still looking for an actual video of the play, with announcers voices and crowd noise.acme said:awesome. and thanks... going to click on it right now!first i gotta go pop some corndtour77 said:![]()

Actually, I recognized the play immediately (from the 25 yard line). But thats just me.I was at that game it took everyone about 20 minutes to figure out WTF happen![]()
I saw one at a college football game when I was a kid. The team scored a TD and lined up to go for 2. Suddenly the QB ran backwards about 10 yards. I asked my dad what was going on and my dad said "I bet he's gonna do a dropkick." And sure enough, he did. Then the idiot referee threw a penalty flag and said they weren't allowed to dropkick.Actually, I recognized the play immediately (from the 25 yard line). I'd like to add that that was the most selfish moment in the history of the NFL. Asking to dropkick an EP in a meaningless blowout and then jumping around like you accomplished something. Worse than anything TO has ever done.
You drop the ball with the the tips pointing up/down and then kick it like a regular ball. Its really difficult as you gotta drop it in front of you without it falling over. Can someone explain what a dropkick is? I'm not familiar with the play and can't play the video from work.
Basically it's the same idea as a FG or extra point. Those plays use a holder to steady the ball, a dropkick doesn't.It's different from a punt because the ball must touch the ground. Can someone explain what a dropkick is? I'm not familiar with the play and can't play the video from work.
I am not sure I would go that far, but it was definitely overhyped. ESPN's (or Chris Berman's) man-love for Flutie is the main reason why such a big deal was made out of it.I'd like to add that that was the most selfish moment in the history of the NFL. So wait, what was the situation in the game? Did he kick for a field goal or extra point? If so, why not just let the placekicker do it?Basically it's the same idea as a FG or extra point. Because Flutie had always wanted to do it. He'd learned how to do it in the CFL and always wanted to try one in the NFL. The game was a blowout, so they let him.If so, why not just let the placekicker do it?
I've also heard BB has an affinity for traditional football. It hadn't been done in the NFL for many years. Not unlike the throwback uni.Because Flutie had always wanted to do it. Because I never have.Anyone have this video? Crazy with all the football fanatics out there and not one guy knows where to find this...Did it really even happen? Flutie learned it thinking that the league had pretty much forgotten about it, but since it was still legal, it might be another way to fake out the defense. Obviously, just about anyone would rather just take their chances with the FG unit.Because Flutie had always wanted to do it. He'd learned how to do it in the CFL and always wanted to try one in the NFL. The game was a blowout, so they let him.If so, why not just let the placekicker do it?
Honestly, you're not really missing that much. You can see what happened in the video at NFL.com. While it's not much to see in one regard, it's pretty cool to fans of NFL history.I would like to see a closeup of the ball hitting the ground and then being kicked in Flutie's play.Totally cool that there was a drop kick in a regular season game.Back when my office FF league started in 1988 and I wrote the rules, I included points for a drop kick - although I didn't think I'd ever see one in the modern NFL.Yep, it was a pretty cool event.Honestly, you're not really missing that much. The drop kick was just another example of classless play on a team led by BB. Before Pats fans jump on me too much, I'll stipulate that no rule in the NFL says you have to do classy things. This is an issue separate and apart from breaking NFL rules. It's just not classy to have your backup QB drop kick an EP when nothing is wrong with your kicker in a blowout, just like it isn't classy to take a 70-0 game to 77-0.
It wasn't kicking an extra point. They have a KICKER on the roster to do that. It's like letting your star outfielder come in to pitch in a 16-0 game because he always wanted to do so. It's rubbing it in.If it weren't, they'd have done it in a competitive game. The drop kick was just another example of classless play on a team led by BB. No why WOULD they do it when the game is on the line? That was the whole point...the NFL is not as fun as it used to be so im not sure why you deem a coach letting his "backup" QB do something memorable and fun as "classless". I can remember LT throwing a TD pass or 2 when the game was well out of reach...was that a classless move by Shotty? They have QB's for that don't they?It wasn't kicking an extra point. My guess is that very few people took this as rubbing it in, it had nothing to do with who they were playing against. Most fans probably thought it was fun and of historical interest. That was my opinion. It wasn't kicking an extra point. They have a KICKER on the roster to do that. It's like letting your star outfielder come in to pitch in a 16-0 game because he always wanted to do so. I remember that. Plus, it was obvious that they wanted to be the 4 seed, so they could potentially be matched up with the 1 seed, Indy (whom they hadn't lost to in forever at that point), in the 2nd round instead of the 2 seed, Denver (who always clobbers them). And the best part was the 3 seed, the Bengals, lost in the first round, so the Patriots got the Broncos in the 2nd round anyway and got their usual defeat.BTW, I have to own up to being completely wrong about the circumstances of this game. It wasn't a blowout -- it was a game the Patriots were actually specifically trying to tank for playoff matchup purposes (to get the Jags in round 1 as I recall). That actually does change the analysis, though I personally think it was still classless for that reason. I subscribe to the school of Herm -- you play to win the game.
But you'd get to break the Bears recordThe drop kick was just another example of classless play on a team led by BB. I'd really like to.
Can anyone help me out on this?
Thanks.
LOL at anyone who would pay money for that.Well, if you can't see the play, you can always have this...Dropkick LinkyI have never seen the Flutie drop-kick play.

It would be like Tiger Woods playing a round of golf from the opposite side to show you he could still kick your butt. It's not just him playing golf.It wasn't kicking an extra point. They have a KICKER on the roster to do that.![]()

hate will destroy you.Jimmy James said:You just illustrated the difference. If it's not a play you'd consider using except in a blowout and if it's a play called to score points, it's classless to call the play. I don't know whether or not LT2 has thrown an option pass in blowouts or not, but I know LT2's passes and option passes in general are not used only in blowouts. They're a fairly common tactic that gets used every single year.
Perhaps.BB's ego will suffocate everyone in New England far sooner than that, though. Good luck.hate will destroy you.Jimmy James said:You just illustrated the difference.
