draft-day mistakes to avoid (1 Viewer)

Don't go to the DJ logic show on Friday night, then attend the after-party, then finally make it back into town the next morning, only getting about 1 hour of sleep before the start of your draft.

Know the tendencies of the NFL teams. Know which teams tend to play a run first approach, and try to get the RB from those teams on your roster. Try to avoid RB's who are not getting carries in the 2nd half because their team is playing catch up. Try to get a QB from a pass first oriented team, and try to avoid a QB from a lousy team if your league scoring penalizes for INT's (most do these days don't they?) When filling your WR4,5,and 6, take a guy who's team you think is going to be passing a lot at the end of the game. Garbage end of the game points count just the same in fantasy. A late round WR on a team playing from behind is usually more valuable than a WR on a team that is ahead killing the clock with the run game. There are obvious exceptions to my suggestions, someone like Barry Sanders comes to mind, you wouldn't want to pass on him because he was on a team that was trailing at halftime a lot. My suggestions are more for deciding between 2 or 3 different players when your pick comes around, these thngs may be something to consider.

If you are a guy who goes value over need

(i.e you have your 4th RB before your 2nd WR or 1st TE)

and your master plan is trading away later in the season, again as others have said, know your league mates.

This strategy pays off ONLY if your league mates like to trade.

No point in being the guy having to chose 2 between SJax/Portis/Grant/KSmith, when you then have to then choose 3 of Cotchrey/MClayton/Hackett/Driver/DHB/Doucet/Furrey/Hixon....you get the point

oh, and in dynasty leagues - drafting RBs who don't really have top talent but whose situation is great, early. Think Marcel Shipp a few years back. Or (IMO) Forte now.
I do exactly the opposite. Draft the talent because the cream always rises to the top.Marcel Shipp? How did that work out for you over time?
uh yeah, that's the point.

Take the guys you want, when you want. It might sound nice to have your leaguemates admire all your "value" after the draft...but that earns you nothing when the games start. You should follow your own hunches.

In one league last year I wanted Drew Brees and Larry Fitzgerald, so I took them "too early" and heard about it-- until I won the league. Another year I patted myself on the back for taking Eddie George...while someone else had to "settle" for Priest Holmes. I crashed and burned and congratulated the Holmes owner at the end of the season.

But in both cases, I took the guys I wanted. If the guy you think can be a difference-maker is there in the 5th, take him even if you "should" wait until the 7th. It's not a reach if you have the guy you want. Win or lose, you'll feel better by following your own path. You can't select your team with the goal of drawing praise from other owners, or guys on a message board.

I still remember taking Eddie George and letting Priest go. Part of the fun, really (although it wasn't fun when I was fading down the standings). But my biggest regrets were taking who I "should" take, instead of who I wanted.

Again, take who you want, when you want.

If you're stressed to the point that you don't enjoy it, scale back to a cheaper or free league. IT'S A FREAKING GAME! Tell Bill I said to have a Coke and a smile and shut the %*@# up.

I think the most common rookie drafting mistake is putting too much emphasis on BYE weeks. Never pass a player you like for a player you like less just b/c of his BYE week. A slight exception to this rule is your backup QB, TE, K, etc.

If you're stuck on two players in the same TIER, this is how you should compare them based on importance.

1) Health/Potential

2) Schedule/Situation

3) BYE

But never take a player you know isn't better just because you are trying to spread around your BYE weeks.

I would say its actually better if all your starters end up with the same bye week.

Then you are at a 50 point deficit one week, and full strength all other times. Better than a weekly 10-15 point deficit

Get a woman or two in your league. There are multiple benefits to this. One is obvious. Just for the eye candy. The other two reasons are that women fall into two categories: They either show up horribly unprepared and draft a terrible team because they don't really care and are just there to have fun; or they show up with a chip on their shoulder eager to shake the stereotype of being a dumb chick and are really easy to heckle and get into their heads forcing them to make bad picks. Just sayin'...

don't shower for two days before the draft and make sure you work up a healthy sweat right before you show up. When it is someone's turn to pick, put your arm around them and whistle the Jepordy song. When they finally make their pick, crack up laughing and say "Seriously?" Oh, and it really helps to eat some cheap Mexican about an hour before.

 I had a 3peat going into last season, not really a true 3 peat as 3 years ago 2 leagues got condensed into 1 due to people dropping out. I won the last year of the defunct league. The new combined league is definitely better competition. So anyway, I was going for my true 3-peat (or 4 peat if you will) but even though I was the top seed, I lost in the first round of the playoffs to the eventual champion, my wife. God bless 4 straight years of positive $$$ in the household for a silly hobby.ETA: 2 years ago the wife and I finished 1-2. Thank you FBG's your info puts us ahead of the competition.4 or 5 years ago, another husband/wife combo took 1-2 in the same league, I think it was the same year I won the defunct league, although it may have been the year before that. I think it was the wife that won, but I'm not certain. Those are the only 2 women in the league. The other 10 guys are probably really getting mad at this point, but I'm sure their time will come, (hopefully not)

True.I had 3 players on a bye week one year, then Chambers was traded to the Chargers, and suddenly I had 4. it didnt affect me. I finished 15-1 that year and the one loss surprisingly was not the bye week.

When planning for a draft, assume that at least one thing will go wrong timing-/attendance-/communication-wise. If you're planning on doing a draft by IM, telephone or e-mail, have at least one backup plan in case things fall apart. Telephones lines might be busy, computers might crash, you might not be able to log back into a chat room if something booted you out. Let the other guys know that if you can't be reached via your preferred method, then thay can contact by designated alternate means.
