Draft Order (1 Viewer)

Anyone have any new ideas on how to select the draft order of a re-draft league? The drawing names out a hat is getting old and leaves some of the people a feeling that they had no input in the system. The commish is proposing picking winning team and total score from Dallas' last preseason game, commish a big Cowboys fan. Person with winning team and closest to the score gets the first pick. Not really sure if this is any better. Sure you have some say because you get to submit the winner and total score. But you might as well have your dog pick the winner and score, since we talking about a preseason game, especially the last preseason game. Any thoughts?

We do it at the START of our draft. Adds to the excitement of the day, trading draft positions is allowed but not just for the first round bit the whole draft..

( Never been done as of yet though) We will pick names from a hat, last place finisher picks first and so on, Champ picks last.

We have tried pre-picking our draft position and it seems to help speed up the first 4 rounds of the draft but the vote was to do it at the Draft start last year.

Guppies were complaining that shareks were getting a advantage, friendly league.

We have our pre-draft meeting this Saturday on a pontoon boat, Suds & BBQ manditory. We discuss any problems and rule changes that will be voted on, etc etc.

We use an NBA-style lottery, works good and is a little more exciting. Worst team (reg. season record) from the previous year gets 12 names in hat, second to worst gets 11 names, and so on. Then we pick the names out of the hat. First team chosen gets first choice of draft spot (1-12), and so on.

Fastest, best way. Goes out to everyone at the same time. No commish pulling fast ones. Also, I hear a lot of people finding out the day of. I think if you are good at FF, knowing your pick way before is a huge advantage. Leave the same day order for the gup's

I had one league where we went in reverse order of the previous year's finish. The last place team got to pick where they wanted to draft the following year. Ultimately the idea of punishing the person who won the whole thing last year got to be un-fun.

Take playing cards numbered Ace through whatever your league goes up to (8, 10, 12, 14 or whatever) and put them into a paper bag. Staple the bag shut and cut a small hole in the bag large enough to put your hand in it.

Mix the cards up and then allow the owner who had the worst record from last year to select first. Then keep going in reverse order of record until the league champion picks the last card.

We do this every year in our league going on 8 years and guys love it.

Furthermore, I highly reccommend that you pick your draft order before draft day. Knowing what pick you have plays an important role in establishing a draft strategy.

We do it a little different. We draw cards, ace gets the choice of first round selection. He can choose any slot he wants from 1st to 12th. Believe it or not most guys do not take the highest picks. The guy with the deuce gets the next selection and chooses between the remaining open slots. Obviously the second round is the opposite of the first.

The guys who end up with the first four picks are the first division, the next four the second division, and so on. Some guys will base where they pick on the division, either wanting a division foe that they think is easy or staying away from one they feel is a challenge. The three division winners plus one wildcard make the playoffs.

Once the first round is done, we draw for all the odd rounds just to keep things interesting with the corresponding even number round being the reverse. This means that the guy who got the 1 and 24 does not necessarily get 25.

Do it like a Chinese gift exchange game. That would be kind of fun and a little bit of strategy.

# The person who drew number 1 takes a gift from the pile, opens the gift and sits down with the gift in plain sight, generally on her lap.

# Then "2" then takes a gift, either from the pile or from 1. Then 2 sits down with the gift displayed. If 1's gift was taken, then 1 gets to take another from the pile. She cannot directly take back the gift that was just taken from her. She may be able to get it later, however.

# Then "3" gets up and can take a gift, either from the pile, or from 1 or 2, in which case that person can take either a new gift, or one from another person, but not the gift that was just taken from her.

# Etc. etc. and the very last person has the choice of all of the previous gifts, or the one (or more) still in the pile. Toward the end of the game it's not at all unusual for a lot of gifts to move around in a single turn before finally somebody takes a gift from the pile.
Game play

1. Each guest (or couple, if appropriate) who wishes to participate must contribute a gift.

2. The organizer prepares slips of paper equal to the number of gifts with clearly written numbers - underlining 6 and 9 is suggested. Each participating guest blindly draws a slip of paper to determine their position in the turn-taking order.

3. On the first turn, the guest with paper slip #1 chooses a gift, opens it, and reveals it to all the other players.

4. On the second turn, the guest with paper slip #2 gets the choice of "stealing" #1’s unwrapped gift or choosing a wrapped one. If #2 steals #1's gift, then #1 must choose and open a wrapped gift.

5. On the third turn, the guest with paper slip #3 gets the choice of "stealing" either #1’s or #2’s unwrapped gifts, or choosing a wrapped one.

Turns

1. The turn proceeds until a wrapped gift is chosen and opened. If your gift is stolen you may steal from someone else that has a "live" gift.

2. Once a gift is stolen, it can not be stolen again until the next turn. (This rule prevents the stealing and re-stealing of a gift from creating an infinite loop.)

3. A gift is "dead" once a gift has been stolen 3 times.

4. "Owners" of "live" gifts must keep them visible and hold them up when requested by a potential thief.

Conclusion

1. The gift exchange typically ends when the last wrapped gift is chosen and opened.

2. However, if the first player has not had a chance to steal a gift, they may be permitted to do so at this time:

1. The first player's gift is then returned to the center area, and subsequent players can either choose it or steal another "live" gift.

2. At this point, the gift stealing continues until there are no more "live" gifts or until the current player decides not to steal.

3. If another player decides to take the first player's gift from the center, the game ends immediately.

Wouldn't a FF shark have a clear advantage over the gups by not knowing the draft position until draft day? If the guppy knows his position ahead of time, then perhaps he has the time and opportunity to find out how the experts would draft at his position. If he does not find out until 10 mintues before the draft what his position is, what's he gonna do? Look quickly in the magazine he brought with his cheatsheets?A shark, on the other hand, probably knows the drafting strategy for every draft position already.
