Draft order? (1 Viewer)

How do you determine draft order in a keeper league?

We do a carry over, as in where you finished this year determines your draft order next year. Since the reg season for the keeper league I am in ended tonight ( 10 team league 6 teams make playoffs ) would it go like this?

draft order next year - where they finished this year

#1. last place

#2. 9th place

#3. 8th place

#4. 7th place

then the playoffs determine where the next 6 spots are at?

or

1 to 8 and the championship game determines who drafts 9 and 10?

I'm in two keepers and they do it differently. One is just like the NFL, Super Bowl champ picks last, followed by Super Bowl loser etc.... The other one has the Super Bowl champ picking last, then uses regular season records to pick the rest of the order.

The Super Bowl winner goes last and the rest is determined by the regular season in my league.

If a team doesn't win it all, does it really matter? There is no need to "punish" a wild card team for losing in the finals.

In our league, we do have playoff success penalize future draft picks, because we have league payouts for championship games. Still, this is a good point that we should revisit.

One thing we're also thinking about, since our drafts do NOT snake, is having the first 6 non-playoff draft picks reverse, so there's a tangible advantage to finishing the season strong rather than tanking.

10 Teams we do it like this

SB Champ=pick 10

SB loser = pick 9

3rd place game winner gets choice or 7 or 8

3rd place loser gets the other 7 or 8

Here is the best part...

We play a toilet bowl for the other 6 teams.

top 2 scorers in week 15 advance to week 16 toilet bowl

Week 16 toilet bowl winner has their choice of pick 1 thru 6....the others are drawn random.

adds some strategy and excitement...for instance at the beginning of this year (LJ, SA, and LT2 were available so the winner chose pick 3)

12 team contract keeper league

Top 6 make playoffs, get draft picks 7-12 in reverse order of finish (1st gets 12, 2nd gets 11, etc)

Bottom 6 make toilet bowl, earn lottery entries by order of finish (6 for 1st, 5 for 2nd, etc)

Lottery determines picks 1-6

Draft is ordered (non-serpentine)x.01 First lottery pick

x.02 Second lottery pick

x.03 Third lottery pick

x.04 Fourth lottery pick

x.05 Fifth lottery pick

x.06 Sixth lottery pick

x.07 6th playoff finish

x.08 5th playoff finish

x.09 4th playoff finish

x.10 3rd playoff finish

x.11 2nd playoff finish

x.12 1st playoff finish

In our 12 team keeper 6 teams make the playoffs.

To prevent anyone from tanking in order to get the #1 pick, we have a Toilet Bowl where all the non-playoff teams play head to head to determine who gets the #1 pick over all. Similar to our regular playoffs, the Top 2 seeds (7 - 8 Seeds) get a bye.

Picks 2-6 are awarded to teams based on worst overall record with the worst remiaining record picking 2, next worst record picking 3, etc.

Picks 7-12 are awarded based on playoff results, with the 7th pick going to the 6th place finisher, 8th pick going to the 5th place finisher, etc.

Basically when it is all said and done we have a serpentine draft that looks like this:

Toilet Bowl Winner
Worst Record
Next Worst Record
Next Worst Record
Next Worst Record
Next Worst Record
6th Place Finisher
5th Place Finisher
4th Place Finisher
3rd Place Finisher
Super Bowl Runner-up
Super Bowl Winner
