Draft position (1 Viewer)

For those in leagues that allow you to pick your draft position what's the best spot to pick out of this year? Unfortunately I will have to pick probably 10-12. Do you choose 12 to get the two picks at the turn?

Always take the lowest number. You never know who may fall to ten. Will they be there at twelve? Probably not.

Look at some mock drafts and formulate a plan. Do you want to go RB heavy or take a top QB, etc? That said, I would probably go with the lowest spot too.

I took 3rd this year to take one of Foster/Rice/McCoy but that doesn't make it better. You marry the strategy to the spot not the other way around.

I always look at the top 36 players and then I start putting them in trios and I see what trio I like best. Then I figure out what draft position I need to be in to get them.

I also hate having to make the decision myself so if I want one of the top 3 running backs I want to be sitting at 3 so the choice is easy for me. If the draft I am in allows trades I will also target players for later and if it is my pick and their are 4 or 5 players there that I am willing to take I will try to move back.

I'm not going to have much of a choice this year (drew the 11th pick out of 12 teams), so going by our league's history I'll probably be drafting somewhere around 8 to 9, which for the first couple of guys I'm targeting should be OK with me. My league uses the 3rd round reversal draft method, so it's not all bad being toward the back half of the order. After the top 4 or 5 draft slots are taken, guys start taking the bottom slots. Occasionally someone in the top 3 drops to the back half, but it's not the norm. Usually the 12 spot goes first when someone drops down. People seem to like having two picks in a row and not having a guy "stolen" from them.

I personally like to be near the turns, but not necessarily at them. I find that if I'm in the middle, I always try and gauge who's going to fall to me or be available still, with questions like "Do I think I can wait one more round on this guy?" so that I try and squeeze some extra value out of my picks.

Drafting near the turn, it's either relatively easy to predict (for instance at 10, if you see 11/12 both have QBs, you can wait til they pick to get yours probably) or it forces you to grab the guys you want when they are there because it's another 20+ picks until you're up.

I'm in a 14 team league - I'm trying for pick 4/5/6, because I'll be able to get either one of those big 3 RBs, Rodgers, Brady, or Calvin. Look at how many players you find relatively interchangeable wit your first pick and try to get the last possible pick to guarantee yourself one of them - make sense? If you want one of the big 3, ideal pick is 3rd. If you only want one of Foster or Rice, ideal pick is 2nd...

So, personally, I will be trying for pick #4 to grab one of the QBs, or Calvin, and stay pretty close to the turn. That way I force myself not to try and get extra value at the risk of passing on guys I really want on my team.

Based on draft position:

Players that win championships:

I have seen other studies that show the closer to the top that you are the better chance to win you have. In the end drafting #1-3 is probably the easiest with the middle being the hardest 4-8 and then finally 9-12 being easier again.

1-3: Drafting RB-RB more than likely

4-8: very hybrid and have to take into account alot more variables

9-12: Drafting WR-WR or QB-WR

While it can break down alot different you can't go wrong with being at the top of the draft unless you miss on your 1.01, 1.02, or 1.03 pick.

I'd personally take the 10 spot and get the higher ranked player. 4 spots in between isn't much IMO.
:goodposting: I would also add that it is a lot easier to predict what 11 and 12 are going to draft based on need so you can leave a player on the board with a much higher probability they will be there on the turn for you. Also, with the 3rd round reversal i would almost prefer that spot.
