Draft strategies for larger leagues (14 team) (1 Viewer)

non-PPR performance league, quarterback team league, start QT, 2 RB, 3 WR, TE, k, DT

I expect 10-11 RBs, a WR, and a QB to be gone before my selection. I'm debating whether to go with traditional wisdom and go with a RB/RB selection or pick up a pair of elite WRs. The 2nd round will find most teams picking up RBs and there is a traditional run on WRs in the 3rd. At best, 4-6 QTs will be gone by my 3rd pick and there will have been 15 WRs taken.

Thoughts? I expect to take one of the first 3 TEs with my 5th pick and a top 8 QB if available. I'm toying with the thought of picking up 4 middling RBs with upside and playing matchups each week.

In a league of that size, I'd expect the elite WRs to be gone by your first pick.
Been in this league for ~7-8 years and rarely has more than 1 WR gone in the first round. Maybe 2 this year. My concern is that if I go RB/RB that I won't have a shot at a top 10 WR.

You know your league better than us. Sounds like you've identified that you would end up with a very average team if you went RB/RB/WR/WR/TE/QB in those first 6 picks, and you're making the right call.

in my 14 team league, the 13&14 pick teams have gone WR/WR the past 4 years and they have done well either making the playoffs or coming real close. My league is .5 pts per rec and performance. In the first round usually 2QB's, 4 WRs, and 8 RBs are taken on average.

Well I feel a little better about it - worried you guys would laugh me out of the forum ;) I just started listening to the footballguys podcasts and it seems like they rarely break the RB/RB rule, especially for larger leagues. Thanks for your thoughts - 2 weeks before the draft (God I love this time of year!)

If there are still two of the truly elite guys left - of say Fitz, Moss, AJ, and Calvin - I don't know why anyone would laugh at you, especially considering that if those guys are still there that means that not only are all of the top tier RBs gone but also most/all of the second tier guys as well.

I would probably get at least 1 RB unless only 1 WR goes before you. Especially if its not a full point per rec.

What kind of RBs do you see yourself getting in those middle rounds? You might get last year's Forte or CJohnson, but you might get last years McFadden and Selvin Young, and I don't think a couple top WRs will save you from that?

After first 3-4 rounds, I expect 30-35 RBs are gone and about 3 RBs go a round after that. Worst case is that I should be able to pick up guys like Graham/Ward, Petyton Hillis, Tim Hightower, or someone in the Dallas/Baltimore RBBC. Always a chance of picking one of the guys in the RBBC that becomes the man due to injury.

No doubt I would do this if I thought there was a good chance Ward would be there at RB30. I haven't seen that but its not farfetched. I'd probably target Lynch and FWP as middlers who should be viable starters.

To pull this off, you need to load up on upside bench RBs, imo. I would target RBs like Bradshaw, McCoy, Chester Taylor, etc. If they see action, they could be legit RB1s.
