Draft to win now, for future or both (1 Viewer)

I was wondering how you have drafted in a start up dynasty league?

Draft to win now

Draft for the future

Combination of both.

It seems young players go before the vets. It seems you can draft to win now if you choose.

Combination of both.

This is the reason why a player like Michael Turner can get drafted ahead of a player like Edge.

Also a much higher premium is paid to players like Drew Bress who are in a good young offense.

Ideally, you can do both.

But I think it's best to undershoot (draft too young) than it is to overshoot. Disappointing young players tend to retain some trade value, whereas disappointing old players are quite worthless.

It's just plain stupid to ignore players that can help you win now in a startup dynasty league. Balance is the key, too much one way or the other is bad. I love being in leagues where owners concentrate only on 1st or 2nd year players in a dynasty startup league. Money in the bank.

The key is really to draft good players, because those are the only players who matter. But a good young player is definitely worth more than a good old player.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't take some vets though. Just be careful about the guys on the very tail end of their career.

I draft more for the current year than the future. If you do your homework, you can keep your team strong by getting the young guys who are later round sleepers. A QB tandem of Bulger/Cutler is easily had, and won't cost you the world. No way would I take a guy like Vince Young right now, as he's projected way too high for my taste. When drafting later round RB's, I steer clear of aging backups like Kevin Faulk. Sure, he can score you a few pts in a pinch, but I prefer to take a young guy like Leon Washington and see if he develops. My RB corps is either starting NFL RB's or young hopefuls.

The main thing to remember, even in a dynasty league, is that the current year is always the most important. With good trades/FA pickups you can have a team that is strong for both current and future years.
