Drafting 1st and 2nd overall in a redraft (1 Viewer)

This year in my league (14 team, 19 round, redraft, double serpentine, ppr) I hold the #1 pick. So I'll be starting off rounds 1, 4, and 5 and at the bottom of 2 and 3. The guy in my league at the #2 slot is trade happy, even with draft picks. No, this is not a veiled "Assistanta Coach" post. My question is this....if hypothetically I were to trade my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th round for his #2 overall and two mid/late picks (say rounds 9 & 11 or so), what would your strategy be? I'm sure it would be a near consensus to take LJ and LT2. Then there is that drought until round 5. Obviously I'd have to take backups for my studs, but when? What positions should be shored up?

Or, if the trade was made, would a better long-term move (though less "sexy") be to trade either of those picks for maybe someone at the 14/15 turn? Go for a mid 1st rounder and try to pick up 2nd/3rd/etc?

Is this a foolish strategy that would decimate a team's starters?

I wouldn't do it. You're putting too much of your team's stock into those 2 picks. If one of those guys goes down, your team is going to be hurting. I'd rather have a solid overall team, than just 2 studs and so-so players at other positions.

I'd grab LT and Portis but I would be worried about catching back up. No doubt you could nab 2 WR's but you would be real weak at TE and QB. If you think you can get a steal for those 2 positions then maybe. Byes would also probably be a loss.

I'll disagree and say go for it. If there's one thing I've noticed over the last several years since we've started seeing a regular dose of truly dominant backs it's that it seems the vast percentage of league champions are people that hold those playmakers, not guys who have a solid team top to bottom. It's hard enough to build one of those teams anyways with the inevitable busts everyone always runs into at some point, especially in a 14 team league.

In my big money redraft league this past year I won it with Larry Johnson and patchwork guys around him (KJ busted, TO got suspended, Gonzo busted...but LJ made everything ok). Likewise in my big money dynasty league the LJ owner won it all on the back of LJ and Palmer with basically garbage all around them.

In a 14 team league everyone is going to have holes, you may as well concede that and go for the gold. Sure, if one of them busts you're done for, but if they don't I think your odds are much better riding those two horses than riding a more traditional draft.

Regarding the rest of your post on what to do afterwards I think you may be better off just grabbing their cuffs over general RB depth because if they just aren't scoring points then your season is over anyways. Plus LJ and LT have the same bye week so you're going to lose that week no matter what so you don't really need the RB depth as you should be starting KC RB and SD RB every week of the season except the week they have byes, which you're going to lose whether you leave the RB positions empty or fill them with 7th and 8th round picks in a 14 team league. You're going to have to focus your next few picks on WRs. In giving up all those middle round picks you are forgoing the option to take a QB or TE even remotely early as you're going to need WRs badly, wait on a QB where steady guys like Plummer and Green can be found quite late this year.

EDIT: This is all assuming you go LJ and LT with those two picks.

I really didn't want to make this into a AC type thread, but more to discuss the theory of making a big move while still retaining the #1 draft slot. As a "for instance" one way I am looking at this trade is to plug all my league details into the Draft Dom and see who I might (based on other teams following ADP) take at the slots I'd be trading. Essentially, the deal could become Reuben Droughns, Donald Driver, and DeShaun Foster for LJ, Terry Glenn or Keyshawn Johnson, and Kitna/Brunell/Simms.

On the face value there, it would seem to be a reasonable deal. Sometimes putting names to numbers can make a world of difference, doncha think? I still think the best move would be to try and parlay either the 1 or 2 overall into more early round picks and basically move up in some of the first few rounds for very little cost.

Uhhh, do you the simple research. LT and LJ have the same bye week.
Which would make it very easy to write that week off and select other players that may have that same bye week and see it as little/no penalty since that week is already "lost" anyway.

Every year at this time these post come up and every year its a mixed decision.

If you take last year for example, you may have drafted Holmes and Tomlinson.

Holmes was out by early to mid season and Tomlinson had a nagging injury.

I believe a similar case is to be said about the year prior and the year prior to that.

This year, I think it's obvious RBs outside the top 5ish are rather deep and hard to determine. So I'd much rather be double picking in 2nd and 3rd rounds than taking top 2 picks overall.

Taking top 2 overall, your team may look like this as starters.

McNair

LJ

LT

Housman

Mason

Whitten

Taking extra picks in 2nd and 3rd and keeping 4th and 5th

Might be more like this

McNabb

Droughs

Lewis

L.Fitzgerald

T.Holt

Whitten

Definitely do it. LJ + Portis = win your league.

Plenty of sleepers.

Holmes owners owned LJ in almost all (non-dynasty) cases.
