Drafting from various draft positions (1 Viewer)

We've had a series of threads in the shark pool each year, one thread for each draft slot, with posts outlining the pros, cons and various strategies for the draft slot in question. For example, one thread would be "Drafting #4 in a 12 team, redraft league". These have been great threads, with tons of input and solid advice from a lot of people. I hope we're doing something like that this year, but I'm not really sure how to get it started. Any news, ideas or thoughts? Thanks...

You just did start it. Anyway I def think its important to think out because if your at the top ur getting a rb but anywhere else is up for debate. Ill post na early draft idea Ive been thinking of and go from there. Theres essentially 3 spots...early 1-4, middle 5-8, and late 9-12. All these are personal opinions.

Early- Im getting A rb, duh. So when it snakes around Im usually targetting the highest tier of either wr or qb. If manning slips to me im taking him no matter what. I personally love brady but am on the fence whether ill spend a 2nd on him. If all those guys are gone there should be great wrs available so ill get a guy like austin, fitz, wayne. Then rnd 3 Ive decided im taking jamaal charles no matter what if he is there. So then if I got a wr in the 2nd I will pray for romo in the 4th and if hes not there im waiting on qb since I dont put rivers in the same class and think he will be just like the other mid tier qbs with no stud wr (jax long gone)and a questionable oline. If I got manning in the 2nd that means its time for best available rb/wr. I need a wr bad but if a higher tier rb is there I wont hesitate, but will lean toward a serviceable wr.

The other strategy here if I got the qb in the 2nd is to get gates or clark in the 4th in attempt to Get a top player at 3 out of 4 positions and basically foresaking wr and hoping to strike gold with sleepers. Because after you get the TE, you Need a 3rd RB BAD or they will be all lotto ticket sleeper picks later on. I will targer wrs like housh and santana moss who i think will have decent seasons or catch alot of balls.

Again this is just what im kicking around in my head for an early draft and im not saying that its the best way.

My favorite spot is #4, where I can get the last of the Big 4 and swing around and get a WR from the Marshall-Austin-White group, a QB like Manning, or another RB like Beanie or Matthews. That seems like a good place to start out on the right foot and go from there.

I'll be drafting at the 9 slot in a 10 team 3 keeper redraft league. Most of the top tier RBs and WRs are off the board at this point but it seems every year someone will over value some player (I wouldn't be surprised if someone screws up and selects LT2 in the top ten). THis year I have Randy Moss, Sidney Rice, and MJD as keepers so i'm hoping I can grab someone in the line of Knowshon Moreno or a Beanie Wells to drop to me at the 9 slot. I like both RBs to possibly break out dispite there situations (Tebow and Leinhart possibly starting). Then I can pick up a starting QB and WR3 in the 19th and 22nd overall picks.

i've got the 1 slot in a 12 team PPR start 3WR + flex IDP league.

gonna go peterson or johnson, then probably WR/WR if it plays out like the mocks have been. looking like i can get 2 of colston/marshall/austin/rice. hoping for RB value in the 4th and if romo or schaub falls i'll grab him at 5. if not i'll try to get cutler and/or begin a QBBC at the next turn, and any TE value if it falls. then grab some wr value later on (hester/knox/a bryant/mason). start looking for DL around 10/11, LBs in the mid teens, DBs and Ks last (mid-20s).

rather it was an auction but LOVE the 1 slot if only for the bookend picks. much easier to set up a strategy

Foureyes...I don't draft positions, I stick to drafting the best value that drops to me each round using tiers. My #1 Commandment

Out of a 12 team re-draft, my ultimate slot if I got to choose.......is the #6 or #7 pick.......right in the middle of each round......

i just traded my 12th pick overall for the 7th pick. I like pickingin the middle, not the ends...
I've learned over the years that I am better (as a drafter) in the middle of the rounds......on the ends,......I suxor.

Huge,I agree 100%...you can't win without sticking to value based drafting. I find it easier to do when you draft in the middle (picks 5-8 in a 12 team serpentine redraft) because it's not too hard to predict what is likely to fall to you at your next pick. If you have bookend picks at either end of the draft (1-3 or 10-12), it's tougher to take chances that a particular player or position will fall to you, since there can be 15-20 picks to be made before your next one comes around. Therefore, there's a much greater tendency to reach (rather than wait for value) because you're afraid you'll lose a player you're targeting, or worse yet, there will be a run on a position you never saw coming, wiping out entire tiers of players before your next pick. I'm in one league where we draw straws for the right to select our draft slot. For example, the owner who gets number one gets to pick first and select which draft slot he wants to take. The owner who gets number two then gets to select from the eleven draft slots which remain. Last year, the first guy picked slot #1, the second guy picked #6, followed by #12. Obviously, the owner with the top choice decided he wanted ADP and 3 of the top 25 picks. The next owner to select preferred choosing in the middle of each round. This system gives owners one more thing to think about going into the beginning of the season.Even tho VDB should be the most important tool going into the draft, and one should be flexible in letting the draft develop, I still think it's worthwhile to have several strategies in mind, based on mock drafts and knowlege of other owners in the league, to dominate the draft and minimize the chance for unexpected surprises.
