Drafting with Guppies (1 Viewer)

You are right. The "Guppy" probably move was taking AJ instead of MJD or Mendy at #7-- I still would have hadmy choice of Fitz/Nicks seven picks later or gone RB-RB with Hillis or Gore. It is debatable whether in a PPR league the combined difference between AJ/Hillis is significantly less than MJD-Mendy/Fitz-Nicks, but I see your point. As far as the two Rookie back up WRs. Both have upside, but as we all know rookie WR's usually are either bador inconsistent. The best I can hope for is a Dez Bryant type of performance. I figue I have two shots at that and I would take it for a non-starter roster spot. Aslo in our ten-team league there will be FA's available and if neither preforms I should be able to trade from one of my other strengths.Still I like this team vs the other best teams except team 1.Pick #1 AP, Forte, Calvin, BMarsh, Ben or Pick #2 Foster, Bradshaw, Nicks, Austin and Vick, or Pick #5 Charles, Turner, Wallace, Tampa Mike, Brees.
Wait, so you took Hillis in the 2nd round with Calvin, Nicks, and Vick still on the board?

Here was a 14 team PPR IDP keeper draft I just did. The guys definitely weren't sharks, but I didn't think they'd be guppies

Roster: QB, 2RB, 2WR, W/R, TE, DST, LB, DL, DB

QB: Stafford, Eli

RB: McCoy, Felix , Starks , Reggie, Fred Jackson, Tate

WR: VJax, Marshall, Amendola,

TE: Witten

D/ST: Patriots

IDP: TJ Ward, Timmons , Justin Smith

List of draft picks (#7 overall pick):

1: McCoy

2: Vjax

3: Felix

4: Witten

5. Marshall

6: Starks

7: Reggie

8: Stafford

9: Amendola

10: Kolb (traded straight up for Eli)

11: Plaxico (traded straight up for FJax)

12: Patriots defense

13: Ben Tate

Not sure how well I did though.

After choosing to not take the 7th best RB at #7 I was expecting the six picks until my next one would start grabbing WRs and Rogers and/or Vick. Nope they mostly went RB. So at #14 DD is screaming Hillis (Their #7 ranked PPR RB). I still don't know if I would have rather had Gore, Turner, Forte or SJax. I could have gone for Calvin or Nicksand had a decent chance at one of those RBs at my next pick, but it was 13 picks away. I felt I had to go RB and was happy to still get VJax six picks later.
that's why only a guppy would blindly trust the DD. Forte was the obvious pick there. I could even see Calvin or Nicks and you probably still would have had one of the RBs in the 3rd

I'd rather have Hillis than Forte for sure, probably the other RBs he gave as well.

Great topic -- I'm in a few of these leagues, so I'll discuss my strategy in a nutshell:

The biggest difference I've noticed is that mid round RBs are there a lot later than they should be. With that in mind, I usually draft 1 RB in the first two rounds depending on value, then take 2 WRs and a QB in the next three rounds, followed up by several high upside RBs later. An example of a few of these drafts in 12 team PPR leagues to give you an idea of what I'm looking at:

1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, RB/WR, TE PPR

A. Rodgers, E. Manning

D. McFadden, M.Ingram, T. Hightower, M. Tolbert, M. Barber

M. Austin, M. Williams (TB), B. Lloyd, B. Edwards, A. Roberts, D. Moore

J. Finley, R. Gronkowski

1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, RB/WR, TE PPR

T. Romo, S. Bradford

S. Jackson, B. Wells, M. Lynch, J. Starks, W. McGahee, D. Carter

A. Johnson, M. Austin, B. Lloyd, M. Thomas, M. Sims-Walker, D. Moore

R. Gronkowski

Again, my RB2 position is pretty up in the air, but there are a lot of guys who could potentially fill that spot for me. I'm confident that between them and my waiver picks I can find a #2 RB, and I feel like I'm coming out of these drafts with three top 20 WRs and a top 5 QB.

If the runs of positional players is truly as extreme as you say, it seems like the most logical course is to make sure you are the one to start the runs. In most any draft, the first round should be fairly typical. It seems like you may just have to give up your "shark" logic and draft a QB much earlier than you usually would...you seem to say that every other team will follow suit, so if they do, the players you want should be available to you for you next pick.

I guess I wasn't clear on my last post about the "Pick 1, Pick 2 and Pick 5" Those are the core players for the other

guys who picked at the one, two and five holes.

FBG certainly has Hillis higher than most other sites which directly impacts DD. MOP also had him in the second round tier and I

always respect his analysis. The Huddle had him as the #11 RB. Obviously not everyone is going to agree on him. I did not blindly use

DD to make the pick. I would still take him over the injury history of Gore or lack of receptions by Turner. By my second pick at

#14 ten RBs were gone. Rogers was gone and I,m not taking Vick at 14. So if I take Calvin, what starting RBs are left 13 picks later?

It turned out be Best, Bradshaw or DWill. I will take the difference between VJax vs Calvin compared to the difference between Hillis and

any one of those three guys.

I feel more like a Guppy with two rookie backup WRs and one rookie backup RB. Especially after getting burned on Best and Mathews last year.

However, I got Ingram at #67 and Julio at #94 and AJ Green at #127.

The whole point of starting this thread is I didn't see anyone else do it, and all the perfect draft info, VDB and ADP info works fine with other

guys that are Sharks. Most will agree you shouldn't take a QB in the first two rounds and should stockpile RBS/WRS for the first five or six rounds.

My group usually drafts their main five starters first, which means the QB and/or TE run can happen at any time. If I follow the Shark pattern, I end up

with a great stable of RBS and WRS but end up with Freeman at QB and Pettigrew at TE. 10 teams leagues are about starters because you don't have the

scarcity issue of larger leagues.

I ended up with the best WR tandem, an average RB tandem, a top five QB and a top five TE, depth at every position and a top def playing

SF and STL in the playoff weeks. Short of a rash of injuries, I'll be in the playoffs again and hopefully can win title number five.

Let the games begin!
