Drew Brees Thread (1 Viewer)

I picked up Cousins two weeks ago and he won me the last two weeks on his own pretty much....so even when Brees comes back, I think I will still sit him. Cousins is just too hot right now.

Drew Brees (thumb) plans to resume practicing this week.

Brees has resumed throwing and appears to be in the final stages of his recovery from last month's thumb surgery. The future Hall of Famer "hopes" to return against the Cardinals in Week 8 but wouldn't fully commit, telling ESPN Saints reporter Mike Triplett "we'll see" based on how the week unfolds. The Saints have yet to lose with Teddy Bridgewater under center (5-0) and have a bye scheduled for Week 9. Brees and fellow offensive juggernaut Alvin Kamara (ankle/knee) both appear to be eyeing Week 8 returns, though New Orleans may opt to play it safe by keeping them out through the bye week.

with week 9 being a bye week and being 5-0 under Bridgewater, it would make absolutely no sense to have Brees play week 8.

Have him dress as the backup in week 8 (with Teddy starting) with an eye toward starting in week 10

Heaven forbid anything happen to Teddy Ballgame, but at least this way you're prepped if something does.

While I agree with you, I imagine there's a 0% chance Drew is active and not playing.

This week is a great matchup so I would love for him to play.  That being said, the safe bet for the team is to start him after the Bye and since they have been winning they have the luxury of being cautious.  This is what I expect.

Saints coach Sean Payton said Drew Brees (thumb) "may be a game-time decision" for Week 8 against the Cardinals.

Payton said Brees will be the starter "if he's ready to play" and that New Orleans' bye the following week will have no impact on his decision. For what it's worth, Brees himself added "the plan" is to play. The team may still opt to play it safe, but it sounds like Brees is truly heading for a game-time call. Sunday will make five weeks since the veteran signal-caller underwent thumb surgery, putting him smack in the middle of his initial 4-6 week timetable. He'll be a QB1 if he suits up and should be rostered in 12-team leagues wherever applicable.

Idk. I was also on the team of "after the bye week" return, but I have faith that they wouldn't consider putting him in if he wasn't 100% ready. They know more than we know.  With the Packers and Niners so hot so far and only slim lead in the division, we are already to the point of "every game matters" really. We need to win. Teddy has played well enough, but if Brees is ready to go, then he's the guy. Always start your studs.

There is also the possibility that they're dangling the "game time decision" as a strategy and have no intention of Brees playing this week. :tinfoilhat:

Coach Sean Payton declined to name a starting QB Sunday.

Payton noted Drew Brees (thumb) was limited, but said both Brees and Teddy Bridgewater got a lot of work this week. It would make sense if the Saints hold out Brees for another week with a Week 9 bye on the horizon, but the franchise's long-time QB has been pushing hard to play for the first time since Week 2. We probably won't know who the starter will be until Sunday morning at the earliest.

Local sports radio is all but announcing that Brees will start Sunday. There is a ton of smoke. The WWL 870 AM drivetime host (Christian Garic) is out-loud pooh-poohing callers that suggest Brees should be held out an additional week.

Additionally, the Saints' local-radio game commentators, Zach Strief and Deuce McAllister, are former Payton players and tightly connected to the locker room. During their in-week broadcasts, they aren't doing a convincing job of making it seems like Brees/Bridgewater is a true game-time decision. They sound like the kid that knows exactly who broke the cookie jar, but ain't saying. They're spilling the beans in pretty much every way except coming out and saying "Brees is starting."

Drew Brees (thumb) is questionable for the Saints' Week 8 matchup against the Cardinals.

Coach Sean Payton declined to name a starting QB. It'd certainly make sense if the Saints give their long-time franchise QB another week off with a Week 9 bye on the horizon. Still, Brees has been pushing to play all week. This decision could go right up to game time on Sunday. Ted Ginn Jr. would be back on the fantasy map if Brees is active. Michael Thomas is a high-end WR1 either way.

Rotoworld:

ESPN's Dianna Russini reports Drew Brees will start Week 8 against the Cardinals.

The Saints have a Week 9 bye, but they are comfortable enough with Brees' health to rush him back into the starting lineup. Brees hasn't played since Week 2 and carries some injury risk, but the home matchup against the Cardinals is close to perfect. Brees' return doesn't change the outlook for Michael Thomas -- he's a beast regardless -- but it does make Ted Ginn more interesting as a dart throw since Brees has been more willing to throw the ball deep compared to Teddy Bridgewater. The last question for the Saints is if Alvin Kamara will play through his high-ankle injury or if it will be Latavius Murray carrying the load at running back. That piece of the puzzle will likely come down to the wire tomorrow morning. The 6-1 Saints are battling for the top seed in the NFC.

Drew Brees completed 34-of-43 passes for 373 yards, three touchdowns and an interception in the Saints' 31-9, Week 8 win over the Cardinals.

Brees also had a 20-yard touchdown to Dan Arnold before the half nullified by a holding penalty. The Saints’ longtime franchise QB missed a few throws in the first half that he normally makes, but appeared to be the same efficient future hall of famer in the second half. Brees found Latavius Murray for a 15-yard touchdown thanks to a well-run option route, later hooked up with Taysom Hill from just five yards out for another score, and capped off his impressive afternoon with a nine-yard strike to Michael Thomas. The Saints have a Week 9 bye before taking on the Falcons in Week 10.

To give you guys a sense of trade value: Brees was just traded for a fourth rounder in my keeper league where we keep one player per position.

Drew Brees completed 32-of-45 passes for 287 yards, zero touchdowns and zero interceptions in the Saints’ 26-9, Week 10 loss to the Falcons.

Brees and the Saints’ offense couldn’t get going all afternoon. He’d been sacked just once all season entering Sunday, but the Falcons’ mediocre pass rush managed to get their long-time rival to the ground on six separate occasions. It was the most sacks Brees had taken in a game since 2013. Overall, the game marked the first time in the Brees-Sean Payton era that the offense failed to reach double-digit points. Brees and the offense will have better days, perhaps as early as next week against the Buccaneers’ brutal secondary.

Drew Brees completed 28-of-35 passes for 228 yards and three touchdowns in New Orleans' Week 11 win over the Bucs.

There's no doubt Brees could've done more had he needed to. The Saints opened with five consecutive scoring drives of 60, 69, 16, 52, and 75 yards to lead 27-10 heading into the fourth quarter. Brees connected with three different receivers on all three of his touchdowns, most impressively finding Jared Cook on a jump-ball over S Andrew Adams in the corner of the end zone to open the second quarter. An encouraging bounce-back after barely being able to breathe inside the pocket against the Falcons in Week 10, consider Brees a confident low-end QB1 back home in the Superdome against the Panthers in Week 12.

Drew Brees completed 30-of-39 passes for 311 yards, three touchdowns and an interception in the Saints' Week 12 win over the Panthers.

Brees orchestrated the Saints' game-winning 65-yard drive after a missed short field goal by Panthers kicker Joey Slye. He remained calm despite having just one timeout in his pocket and connected on a beautiful third-down conversion to Michael Thomas along the left sideline. Brees' numbers could have been even better, as a deep shot to Ted Ginn dropped off the receiver's fingertips. Those vertical shots are hit or miss for this current Brees, but it's nice to see the potential is still there.

Drew Brees completed 29-of-40 passes for 349 yards and five touchdowns in the Saints' 48-46, Week 14 loss to the 49ers, adding a one-yard rushing touchdown.

The Saints jumped out to a quick 20-7 lead on the back of three Brees scores to Jared Cook (twice) and Josh Hill in the game's first 15:03 of action. Cook was concussed on his second touchdown. Brees later QB-snuck in his fourth score on fourth down after Alvin Kamara was stuffed on third down. Brees' fourth-quarter 21- and 18-yard touchdowns to Michael Thomas and Tre'Quan Smith put the Saints ahead 46-45 with 53 seconds to play, but the Niners ended up kicking a game-winning field goal as time expired. Brees and the 10-3 Saints host the Colts in Week 15.

Brees is still the QB I'd want most, if I needed a TD in the last 2 minutes to win a game. I wonder if he'd be in the MVP hunt, if not for his injury. He's been lights out against everybody except Atlanta for some reason.

He's been snubbed at least once.  Possibly twice.

This has been brought up in other threads. Which two seasons has Brees been snubbed?
In 2006, Brees took the 3-13 Saints all the way to the NFC Championship game in his first year in New Orleans, leading the league in passing on the way. However, his old teammate LaDainian Tomlinson broke the NFL record for rushing touchdowns and ran for 1,815 yards.

In 2008, Brees became the first player since Marino to break 5,000 yards passing and also led the league in passing scores. The Saints, however, missed the playoffs with an 8-8 record and Manning's 4,002-yard, 27-touchdown campaign was deemed good enough coupled with a 12-4 record.

In 2009, Brees brought the Saints all the way to the Super Bowl which garnered the AP's Athlete of the Year and SI's Sportsman of the Year Award, but Manning's similar statistics and slightly better record took 32 more votes.

In 2011, Brees broke the passing yards and completion percentage records, produced a 13-3 season, and led the Saints to the most yards in a single season. But Aaron Rodgers threw 45 touchdowns and six interceptions in a 15-1 season that was as close to perfect as possible.

He arguably should have won it in 2006. He absolutely should have won in 2008 because it's an individual award, not what is accomplished as a team. Manning won it not even being the best at his position that year. 2009 was the most egregious though. Brees bested Manning in nearly every possible statistic and they STILL overwhelmingly voted Manning. The only arguable difference was 112 more yards and one more win. BTW, as the article points out below, Brees was held out of a meaningless game after they'd already secured the #1 seed which the Saints lost. So even trying to use that argument is faulty. And before you look it up, Peyton played the final game in the 1st half. He went 14 of 18 for 95 YDS & 1 INT.

Touchdowns - Brees 34 , Manning 33

Interceptions - Brees 11 , Manning 16

Passing Yards - Brees 4,388, Manning 4,500

Yards Per Pass - Brees 8.5 , Manning 7.9

Passer Rating - Brees 109.6 (7th best all time) , Manning 99.9

Completion Percentage - Brees 70.6 (NFL Record), Manning 68.8

Clearly, Brees was superior to Manning.
