Duce Staley not cut (1 Viewer)

Steelers coach Bill Cowher confirmed Saturday that he'll carry four tailbacks heading to the season opener.

Despite many reports, Duce Staley's roster spot is safe. Willie Parker and Verron Haynes are the top two backs on the depth chart.

You say Staley will not be cut but could the other 2 RBs be Cedric Humes and Patrick Cobbs? If Cobbs and Humes are kept Duce is out.

As of now....I assume he is free to sign where ever? I like this kid.

I know I wasn't at training camp, but Staley looked terrible in preseason. I'm shocked they kept him over Humes (or another prospect). Any homers surprised Staley made the roster?

Why did they cut the QB Jacobs?
He struggled in training camp, but I believe he's a lock for the practice squad if he clears waivers.
I would love for the Cowboys to grab this guy.
Can they pull him back in if somebody claims him, like in MLB?
No, but once he's on the practice squad, the Steelers will have the option of putting him on the active roster if another team tries to sign him.

Nightshift, I completely agree that Kuhn should have made the team. He is a beast and would have done well on special teams, take the place of Kreider if necessary, and been able to run as a rb. Bad decision today. I hope he stays on to the practice squad again this year.

They should traded Staley, even for an Iron City & a bag of Beernuts, & kept both Kuhn & Humes. Cobb isn't that much of an improvement. If we are real lucky, they'll sign both to the practice squad. I got a bad feeling we will need both later this year.

I was saying last week that I did not think Staley would be cut. The Steelers just did not feel comfortable having rookies backing up Parker & Haynes. It may seem weird but the #4 RB (Cobbs?) could see more playing time than Duce. Staley is simply an insurance policy in case of injury.

Do any of these backs project to steal goal-line from Fast Willie?

I know the Chin has indicated that he will not pull FWP at the goal-line... do you believe him?

Haynes is the third down back and will likely spell FWP from time to time. What Cowher said was that whoever was in the game would probably not be pulled. So if Haynes is in giving Willie a break, then I guess he would stay in at the goal line.

:goodposting: I think you will end up seeing Duce inactive for most games with Cobbs on the active roster playing on special teams.

Godsbrother, I'm so freaking confused at this. What exactly is Staley insuring? He's not good at anything. Can't be the main guy. Can't play special teams. Can't be the goal-line back. He's like William Green, except for the fact that at 1 point in time he did actually play well. His under/over for the number of games he's activated is 2. What am I missing?

exactly. Given Haynes' tendency to get hurt, you might see Cobbs move up sooner than later. Depends on how quickly he can pick up the offense.

GB can chime in but Staley knows the offense. Although he would not be as effective as FWP, he would be able to step in and work with the first team as the main guy. With that said, I don't agree with Staley being there. Kuhn (see practice squad soon) would have been better. Given a few weeks, Cobbs will be better.

I agree that I liked Kuhn better. More versatile and more effective. Staley may stick on the roster until Davenport is signed. Believe it or not, he may be less injury prone and more effective. T.Henry could also come cheap (Rooney style). Then again, like I've said since they passed on L.White, next year's draft is loaded w/ 220#+ power backs.

Morgan probably had to go to make way for the plethera of talented, young WRs. Besides Ward and Wilson, there is N.Washington, Holmes, W.Reid. That's 5, not much more room there.

Well why not cut Staley and keep one of the guys tat beat him out in camp?
One other possibility is that they may still intend to trade him. To Miami. True, the Fins have alot of choices like Dayne (turf toe), Davenport, A Smith, etc. etc. But Staley was a 3x 1000 yd rusher... possible.

Staley is a known quantity. He may have lost a step but he has experience, something Kuhn, Cobbs and Humes lack. Apparently they believe that Kuhn, Humes and perhaps Cobbs just don't have a grasp on everything it takes. Also, there is a very good chance that Kuhn and/or Humes will end up on the practice squad so they may be able to have their cake and eat it too. If you cut Staley he would be gone forever.

:goodposting: It's a mental thing. Cowher wants to know that if Willie or Haynes goes down he has someone available who knows what has to be done and how to do it and won't make the stupid mistakes that cost games (like the other night when Kuhn punctuated a nice run by fumbling the ball away). Duce may not single-handedly win any games, but he won't single-handedly lose any games either, and that's more important for a backup RB on a team like Pittsburgh. Cowher is saying: "There are other guys there to step up and win it, just don't hurt us."
