[Dynasty] Backup QB's to target (1 Viewer)

Quarterback turnover appears to occur relatively frequently each season. Grabbing guys at low value or off the wire could give you a nice stock of QB's for dynasty purposes and allow owners to grab starting QBs a season or so before they grab starting jobs.

What situations or players in particular are people targeting either due to less than average starting QB or possibility to get a starting gig via free agency.

A few that I see:

Matt Schaub - don't know how cheap you can really get him due to all the chatter hear, but he's got the ability and shows it consistently when Vick goes down. Attention given to him from various teams in the offseason shows he could definitely get some nice attention on the market.

Brodie Croyle - Green is getting old and if this kid shows something in camp, he could get a shot.

Tarvaris Jackson - Seemed to be relatively high on a few team's draft boards, Brad Johnson's getting up there and the focus of that team right now seems to be rebuild rather than win now, so Jackson may get his shot sooner than later.

Andrew Walter - Highly touted guy around these parts for a year or so. Can't be all that close to starting with the Raiders bringing in Brooks this offseason. Would have been an easier battle with Tui at the helm. I don't trust Brooks to win that many games, so Walter could be a late season guy and get a chance to show his stuff for the future.

Matt Cassel - Problem is that he's behind Brady, but he definitely showed his ability last season in practice with NE, and the team seems to have taken a liking to him. If Brady went down definitely worth some spot starts.

Adrian McPhersen - Where has the love gone? Everyone knew he'd be a project and he's still relatively young, but why were so many so high on him last year, but now he's been dropped in most leagues? This guy is definitely worth a roster spot and could end up giving a nice reward in a few years. Despite the fact that Brees is around, that shoulder injury is not the best (as Pennington has shown) and Brees' contract is enormous and seems to be structured like a 1-2 year deal with him being traded or released.

Jason Campbell - Another guy behind an old starter. The 'Skins thought enough of him to draft him in the first round and Brunell has already been battling an injury. He can be had relatively cheap as I recently acquired him in one league for Cedrick Wilson.

David Garrard - Most likely rostered in most leagues, but he showed his starter quality when Lefty went down last year. Poor-man's Vick with better accuracy. Don't know his roster status, but I'd think he'd get a lot of attention should be get out on the market.

Situations that are a bit murky

Jets - Clemens, Ramsey, Pennington or player not yet on Jets roster. My gut feeling is Clemens ultimately. He was on pace to set records at Oregon before his injury.

Bills - What a mess there. I think Losman is going to be fine. He just had a traditional first year as starter and people are knocking him too much with the defense falling apart at the same time the offense did.

TB - Simms' first season starting game 1. May be a short leash and something to watch. Gradkowski has gotten some nice fluff news as of late.

Packers- Is Rodgers really the long-term solution after Favre retires? Very little positive news has surfaced out of GB.

Cowboys - Bledsoe's also getting up there. Henson the answer? He didn't show much in his one start on Thanksgiving and didn't blow the competition away in Europe.

Any additions/thoughts?

I fully agree with Matt Schaub and Andrew Walter.

One obvious addition to your list is Matt Leinart

Another good late sleeper is Dan Orlovsky (Lions)

Only problem with Leinart is that he's going in the 6th-8th round of startups and 6-8 range of rookie drafts. I was more referring to buy low guys who can be had relatively cheap and you could realistically have a starting QB in 1-2 years.

Tony Romo in Big D, not Henson.I expect Henson to be cut and/or traded for precious little. Parcells said he did not see what he wanted to from him in NFLE and that sounds like "the kiss of death" for a player that's been struggling anyhow.

He did well and has a great arm so maybe another team wants him but it does not seem like Parcells likes the guy.

Romo could very well be just a backup ala Jason Garrett. While Parcells likes him, I don't think he's thrown an NFL pass recently if at all. There are uses for quality cheap backup QBs and backup doesn't always translate to future starter. If I had to guess, he is such a backup.

Rodgers is the NFL equivalent of a rebound date. He's doomed to crash+burn following Favre. After this happens, it appears Ingle Martin is gonna get a shot. By that time, however, they could easily have another QB in the mix. I'd stay away from GB backups.

Kyle Boller: He's a backup now, and for what he might cost, worth it I think.

Kellen Clemens: I think the Jets would like to see him be the guy in 2007.

Andrew Walter: I disagree that he's that far away. The Raiders haven't even named Brooks as the starter yet.

Brian Griese: in deeper leagues, I'd love to have him on my roster.

Mike McMahon: I'd be shocked if he didn't see any PT this season. Now, whether he does anything good with that PT.........

Jay Fiedler: A lot of people seem to think Simms is on a short leash, if so, I think he's Gruden's security blanket. Gradkowski down the road.

Brodie Croyle: I wasn't able to grab him in any rook drafts, but I was looking for him. Not crazy about the player, but the situation is interesting.

I thought he was hurt and consequently, the CFLer similarly intrigues me.

I still prefer Luke McCown over Gradkowski. McCown's out most of/all this season with an injury, but everything I've seen on the topic makes it sound like the #2 spot is waiting for him when he returns.

How do you think Fiedler fits into this thought? I see the Fiedler signing as one that allows Grad to mature for a year without seeing action in any quantity.

That may be true. I think Fiedler's the #2 because McCown got hurt. The real question is who's #2 next season between McCown and Gradkowski. I'm assuming Fiedler will be gone after one season.

IMO:

1) Walter

2) Campbell

3) Croyle

4) McPherson

McPherson is an animal. I just wish a team would give him a chance. I'd love for him to anchor a team like Kansas City or Tennessee (neither will happen of course). It'd be cool to see him up in GB if Rodgers fails after Favre retires.

Yes, Fiedler was only signed because McCown got hurt. I would also presume he departs after this season.Gradkowski won't be #2 unless McCown is gone, which I doubt. He's being groomed as a #3 project by Gruden, and the praise coming from Gruden is just to motivate Simms.

Unless the Bucs start off 0-9, you won't see a QB change from Simms. He's an up and coming QB, and while not relevant in the fantasy world beyond a solid QB2 option, he'll be Gruden's guy for probably the next decade.
