Dynasty DB ranking (1 Viewer)

Do you have an opinion on the Philly safety situation? It seems like Mikell will sign somewhere else, but there are still some young guys to sort out.
I'd be surprised if the Eagles aren't starting Allen and Jarrett on opening weekend, but Jarrett's ETA could be delayed a few weeks without OTAs and a shortened camp. Definitely think Mikell is elsewhere.
Will Allen even be ready by week 1 after the injury last year?I think they almost have to bring back Mikell in case. Otherwise they go with a rookie and 2 second year guys as their main safties? I don't see it. Add in the brand new DC and its a recipe for disaster. Not totally shocking for Andy Reid to do something like that but I still don't see it.Totally off-topic and wrong thread but it is Eagles- I don't get the mad love for Chaney either. Bradley steps back in at MLB. He's not a SLB as much as Chaney owners want to think he is. I see Chaney at one of the OLBs with Matthews/ Foku probably at the other.

Jene, what do you think about Josh Wilson as a corner with some value? Is Baltimore really thinking about trading him?

I think he's a free agent. If he re-signs, I'd think the team would hope he'd eventually be the third corner behind Smith and Foxworth. I don't think there's any value until/unless his situation is settled and seems favorable.

Terrell Thomas was the #3 DB in my league last year and in the top 10 the year before. Somehow he seems to get no love and I would love to hear your thoughts about why that is. Thanks

He's not an elite talent. He had a decent 2009 season, but there were offseason rumors that he wasn't guaranteed to start in 2010. He was well below average in coverage last year. The Giants had Prince Amukamara fall into their laps in the first round. They're already talking about moving Thomas to the slot.We had a long discussion about Thomas over email during the all-IDP mock after he was drafted as the first CB off the board. Somebody called him the Rodney Dangerfield of fantasy corners, I (somewhat mockingly and unfairly) countered that making him the #1 corner put him closer to Dane Cook.I think Thomas is in a very good position this year and the slot talk will have him higher in my next rankings. I think he plays outside in the base defense and in the slot in subpackages. That's potentially a monster role. But dynasty owners should be looking to sell high at some point this year. I think the bubble bursts by 2012.

I just traded Jim Leonard straight up for the rookie Philly safety J Jarrett. Jene and others seem to be pretty high on the kid - do we really expect him to start this year? What are we looking at for the secondary from Philly (I know they will go for a CB) so more who will be the starting safeties - nickle backs etc.

Safety is some combo of Nate Allen (assuming his knee is OK), Jarrett, Mikell (depends if he comes back, I would assume him resigning means they are worried about Allen's knee and/or Jarrett's ability to step in as a rookie). Kurt Coleman is there as well and if Mikell leaves he could end up starting if Allen or Jarrett aren't ready.2012 I would assume the plan is Allen and Jarrett. 2011, IMO the longer the lock-out drags on, the more likely the Eagles will be forced to bring back Mikell as insurance for those 2. Either way I don't see the Eagles handing over the safety position to 2 guys with a combined 13 NFL starts. (Though I also thought that they wouldn't turn over the defense to an offensive line coach)CB- Asante and someone else. I would think Hobbs' career is done with the neck. I think they need to chase one of the FAs. Don't think Hanson or Patterson is the future (though either is a decent nickle-back)and Lindley still needs seasoning and the rookie Marsh was a project to begin with and now with no off-season...

They have the former QB of Indy Marlin Jackson - I know they changed his player designation to safety - I wonder if he will fit in at all? He is still relatively young and played fairly well before he was injured and traded to the Eagles??

Injured-> traded to Eagles, moved to safety -> Injured again -> done IMOat a minimum, unreliable

Jene...and fellow IDP sharks...how would you compare/contrast the current rankings of Yeremiah Bell vs Roman Harper? Almost everyone's rankings have them very similar, within the Top 12 DB status, even though there is a 5 year age gap.

Bell has trended down the past two seasons, while Harper has been consistent. Are these two really that close, or do you have any other differentiating factors for these two?

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Both are in the back half of the first tier for me. I think Bell has a higher ceiling in tackle leagues but his age is a concern. Harper's value is tied to his role in NO but he should be reasonably safe if he chooses to sign elsewhere.

From my perspective, age isn't much of a consideration among IDPs. Benchings, trades, scheme changes... they lose value so quickly that I don't see much value in trying to predict five years down the road.

Amen

Hey Jene (or anyone else who wants to chime in), what do you think about Michael Huff? He was outstanding last year with 96 tackles, 4 sacks, 3 picks, and 3 forced fumbles.

I am worried that they may try a three man rotation with branch, mitchell and huff and handicapp the value of all three now that huff is back. Any thoughts jene, john, or ab?

Same here (with the potential exception of Branch). I think there is a likelihood they play all three in a rotation and often times together in a 'big nickel' package. Branch is the only one of the three I would consider immune from losing snaps. Can't imagine him coming off the field in any package.

Any updates or homer info on some of the DB battles and long term outlook? I was hoping we could clear up some of these for Dynasty guys who need to make roster decisions this week.

Detroit's "other safety"? Is it Spivey or just for now

Balt- Zbikowski eventually replace Pollard? or they bring another in next year

Buff- Looks like Byrd and Wilson at least this season

Cincy- Nelson and Crocker?

Den- How long does Dawkins hold on? Is Q, Carter worth holding in a dynasty league?

Jax- Landry and who?

STL- Mikell and.... Dahl? Butler's outlook?

Arz- R. Johnson worth an add? Will Wilson make it the whole season

Chi- Who is the safety to own? Harris or Wright?

I'll add my $0.02 here

PHI- Coleman looks like the guy to own at least for now. Allen has been slow coming back and Page has been getting a lot of time in pre-season. I wouldn't be shocked if they open week 1 with Page and Coleman. Allen hopefully is back sometime into the season but he has looked sluggish and a bit lost. Jarret, not sure what to say here. he hasn't been getting much time with the 1st unit and has been a non-factor from what I have seen. That's why I'm thinking Coleman keeps the job for a while. Coleman racks up tackles and unless the LBs suddenly morph into NFL LBs there will be a lot of tackles to be had. Going into 2012 I think Allen and Jarrett are the guys but Coleman looks to profit the most this year IMO.

Spievey. Coleman has really never made a push for that job.

Balt- Zbikowski eventually replace Pollard? or they bring another in next year

Edge to Pollard, but it's still a competition and possible rotation. Neither is likely the long term SS.

Buff- Looks like Byrd and Wilson at least this season

Yup. Never a question there.

Cincy- Nelson and Crocker?

Mays is a project, but I highly doubt the two starters stay healthy through 16 games and the depth chart behind them is ugly.

Den- How long does Dawkins hold on? Is Q, Carter worth holding in a dynasty league?

I'd hold Carter. Dawkins play has slipped and he's an extreme durability risk.

Jax- Landry and who?

Prosinski has been dinged much of the preseason. He may force his way up the depth chart sometime this season, but it's Greene right now.

STL- Mikell and.... Dahl? Butler's outlook?

Definitely Mikell and Dahl. Rams used lots of dime packages again last week -- the first time they've had their full defense out there -- so Butler might see 10-15 snaps a game.

Arz- R. Johnson worth an add? Will Wilson make it the whole season

Hard to see Wilson lasting the entire season, but it's possible. Johnson worth roster slot in deep leagues only.

Chi- Who is the safety to own? Harris or Wright?

Like Wright over Harris, but I'm not ready to call him the second coming of Mike Brown yet.

Agree with all of this. They'll absolutely start Coleman/Page until Allen is back in form.
