Dynasty/Keeper League rule question (1 Viewer)

I've never played in any kind of a keeper/dynasty league, so not sure what standard practice is. At what point do teams have to submit who they are keeping? Is it something done right after the draft, during the off-season, up to the next draft? I ask because a league I am in may become a keeper league with next years draft, and we are debating the guidelines now. The most likely format will be keep 2, one from rounds 3 - 9, and one from rounds 10 - 17. In the next years draft, you would lose your pick in whichever round your keepers were chosen in the previous years draft. We're just not sure at what time should you be commited to who you want to keep.

Thanks in advance for feedback.

We require keeper decision 4-6 weeks before the next draft. This allows some time for off-season trades before keeper decisions but also allows time for draft prep once keeper decisions are made (and the draft pool is therefore known).

Good luck!

the league I made up, to keep things moving all year, I have the teams submit keepers and contract extensions the week after the superbowl. The week before the NFL draft we draft two rounds of college players in the draft. After the draft we do three more rounds. Then another draft of the cut veterans 1 month before the season starts. On kickoff of game one every team has to cut five players. Rosters are 50 deep, so 'cut 5' isnt too big a deal.

In our 19 year old keeper league, the rule we have always used is announce at the start of the draft, immediately before the first round. This allows traded to be conducted for the players you want right up until draft time. Works great.

We require keepers a week before the draft, which happens as close to NFL week 1 as possible. That way any evaluations from pre-season, injuries, etc. can be accommodated, but still gives everyone the ability to do draft prep based on the remaining players.

Typical Dynasty Timeline:December - Fantasy Football season ends.

January thru League Draft (Rookies) - Some leagues expand rosters and allow additional players. Acquisiitions ofttne by bidding process. Some leagues go the other way and force you to cut down to a given number of players (like Zealots).

Fantasy Rookies Draft - Usually in Summer after the NFL Draft. Some leagues are more aggressive and have rookie drafts right after the NFL Draft. On rare occasions (seems rather silly) conducted before NFL Draft. This is usually done by overzealous FF players starting up a league who are bored in March and April.

Note that some leagues also allow you to draft unrostered veterans as well at the League Draft.

In July and August, you start to pare down your roster to the league limit. Normally 1-3 weeks before Week 1 you have to get down to a given roster size.

Contract Leagues - Similar to above, but you have to get your act together by March 1st usually, the start of the NFL calendar. That's when all contracts decriment by one (or one extension) year for every player.

Keeper Leagues - Similar timelines to Dynasty, but most wait until the Summer to declare keepers and draft close to normal (redraft) leagues. For the sake of some owners who often play in >>1 league, drafts are usually early August.

Owners benefit by holding Keeper decisions as late as possible, as they will know more about each player for the coming season as Training Camps open. Typical decisions are right before the draft.

i think this is a personal league preference.

in our league, we prefer to wait until the night before the auction. some years we've even just declared during the draft/auction.

i don't see the point in announcing early and doing it later offers more strategy as teams must correctly anticipate what other teams will do or or make good decisions in the moment.

mostly, we just do this b/c it minimizes (very slightly) the chance of a keeper blowing out a knee in the pre-season after you've declared.
