Dynasty keeper rules (1 Viewer)

Our dynasty league is entering it's 3rd year in 2009.

We've never had a cap on how many players teams can sign and some owners are starting to think that there won't be enough player turnover in the league in another year or 2. Obviously this is a dynasty league so keeping guys is part of the deal...but I also agree that there should be enough turnover to keep things fresh.

What rules do you guys use in your leagues?

I was thinking about keeping 5 guys max and no more than 2 from each position.

Thanks

For starters this is not a Dynasty league...it's a Keeper League

Dynasty leagues are ones where your entire roster is always kept from year to year and only rookies are drafted.

Without any details it sounds like you're wanting to change from a dynasty to a keeper? Your current rules have no limit on the size of your roster? That will not work for obvious reasons. There are many flavors to choose from, just reach a consensus with your league mates and have a serious debate about the pros/cons of keeping more vs less players.I think a decent rule of thumb for dynasty is to have a roster size about 2x or more of your starting lineup.

It sounds like you want to:1) do a Salary Cap league, where Salaries increase for individual players, requiring GMs to make decisions to drop guys back to Free Agents2) do a Contract Years league, where an initial contract is assigned to players acquired in Free Agency, Trade, or Draft, with some possible way to franchise or extend contracts on limited number of players3) both Salary Cap and Contract Years.I was trying to put together rules for 3) for a new league (using Auctions instead of drafts for Free Agents), but most of the league guys I am pulling in found it to be too complex. I am now leaning towards a Contract Years league, something like: -21-24 players on the roster (non-IDP)-total of 50-60 contract years per team-Max contract is 4 years-Contract must be assigned upon aquisition of a new player in offseason or during the season (probably give one week after a Free Agent/Rookie Draft to assign contracts). I keep a spreadsheet with Rosters, year acquired, and the contract assigned. This is posted to a website when updated. It will decrement the current year and then keep a running tally of years remaining (and total of contract years being used by a Team). When a player's years-remaining hits 0, they go back into the pool for the next Free Agent/Rookie Draft. This simplifies things greatly, but I would want to find a way to reward guys who drafted and held onto young guys for a few years. I have thought to use a Taxi Squad, where guys don't count against your Contract Years until you are ready to 'promote' them to your roster. I have also thought just to allow a 1-time re-signing guys that were drafted by your team as rookies and/or the ability to franchise/re-sign a fixed number of vets each year.I would think that ensures some player turnover but rewards teams for holding onto young guys and doing their homework when drafting rookies.

yeah's that was my understanding of the OP.....and good post from puckalicious, I agree with everything he said. Here are the keeper rules for one league that I play in

Each team owner will be able to keep a maximum of 9 players from their roster from season to season. A maximum 7 declared keeper players (veteran's) and 2 taxi squad players (rookies). After each season teams will declare the 9 players they want.

The maximum players that can be kept at the Offensive or Defensive Positions is 6 players.

Therefore if 6 IOP are chosen, then only 3 IDP's can be chosen, vice versa and any combination in between these parameters.

Keeper Rules for another league I'm in.....almost the same, slight twist

Each team owner will be able to keep a maximum of 8 players from their roster from season to season. A maximum 6 declared Veterans, 1 2nd year player (having completed two seasons), and 1 Rookie (players having just completed their first season). After each season, teams will declare the 8 players they want.

The maximum players that can be kept at the Offensive or Defensive Positions are 5 players.

Therefore if 5 IOP (Individual Offensive Players) are chosen, then only 3 IDP's (Individual Defensive Players) can be chosen, vice versa and any combination in between these parameters.

The 6 teams who qualify for the playoffs are allowed to keep a maximum of 7 players only. These teams must choose 1 less IOP (Individual Offensive Player).

We keep 6-8 players, if you protect less than 8, you go into a supplemental draft consisting of only free agents, no rookies, until all teams have 8 players, then the real draft starts. This was to help new owners compete more rapidly. This league has been in excistence since 1992.
