Dynasty league (3rd year, 14 teamer) (1 Viewer)

WARNING---This is extremely long winded

I need some advice. I'm currently attempting to sway the owners in 14 team Dynasty/Salary cap/IDP/contract league (5 year max). I went 13 - 2 last season, led the league in scoring, and just flat out dominated. However, I think the current format for offensive scoring is flat out lame and I've been campaigning for change since I replaced an owner 2 games in to the 1st season. Here's what what I want to know: What do I need to do/say to swing the vote? Am I barking at the moon? Are these guys ignorant buffoons, or am I the one who needs a reality check. Gimme a clue. Thanks in advance fellas.

Current scoring format:

50 yards rushing = 3 pts. (each subsequent 50 nets you another 3 pts)

50 yards receiving = 3 pts (same deal)

The yardage isn't combined, no PPR, and the scoring increments are 50 yards.

Proposed scoring format:

Combine yardage(this the most important/essential change in my book) and decrease the scoring thresholds:

25 yards rushing = 1.5 pts. (each subsequent 25 nets another 1.5)

25 yards receiving = 1.5 pts (same deal)

I and a few other owners who proposed the changes are meeting resistance on all fronts.

Here's a sampling of the responses:

One owner:

"1. Combine rushing/receiving yards for thresholds. I would vote against this as the only position its going to benefit are the RB. One thing nice about our league is one can be competitive running the predominantly WR formations. I think this may be a thing of the past if we change. Also, if we start combining yardage, why should we only do it for rushing/receiving. Example: If Vick throws for 240 yards and runs for another 45 yards and Favre throws for 250 yards Favre outscores Vick in our current system 3-0. Shouldn't there be a way for Vick to get rewarded for his rushing yards? I could give other examples with RB & WR, but I think you get the idea."

Another owner:

" I'm against any scoring change that devalues TD's. Every change proposed gives more points for yardage while the TD is still 6 points. We are getting to the point were the final scores will be 130 to 129. I thought the whole idea was to make it as close to the NFL as possible, not the NBA.

With more tiers and yardage breaks and categories that you have, you make the league like Rotisserie Baseball, which is not altogether bad, if you like that sort of fantasy game.but I like fantasy football not Rotisserie baseball.

I'm for keeping it as simple as possible (the scoring system) and making the TD the most important points in the game. Yardage is fine but don't let it dominate the scoring. The NFL has only changed it's scoring system twice since the 1950's. That is taking away the 2 point conversion and the adding it back.

Just something to think about."

And yet another:

"I think that I would vote NO on the combining of the rushing

and receiving yards. They are 2different categories. I

understand that some running backs are unfairly penalized

fantasy points wise because they do not meet the thresholds

as established. This makes a more versatile back who can

catch potentially worth less than a straight up runner."

My responses:

"I want to preface my votes with a plea to the owners: Don't let your team dictate your vote. Do what's best for the league. Do what's best for mainaining and increasing the competitive balance. It may not help your squad immediately, but it will in the long run. I dominated the league last year and I'll be very competitive this season. But I want everyone to have a fighting chance... and last year, there were far too many instances of quality players posting 0 to 3 pt scores because of restrictive scoring.

1. Combining rushing/receiving yards:

I don't really understand why there are so many owners resisting this change. 99% of fantasy leagues combine the yardage. Yards are yards. It's hard enough to score points in this league as it is with the thresholds we currently have. Why make it more difficult? And it's a more accurate reflection of the NFL to boot. I also like Steven's idea of lowering the thresholds to 25 yards, but not at the expense of the combined yardage. Why can't we do both?"

" A number of owners have expressed reservations about combining rushing and receiving yards because they feel it shortchanges the WR's. So here's a radical idea:

More and more leagues have recognized this and have since instituted PPR (points per reception---awarding 1 point per reception). Even WCOFF (the biggest money league in the world...$200,000 + prizes) uses this format. Since 1 pt/reception may be a bit too extreme given our current scoring format, why not award 0.5 cz./reception or create a tiered system(similar to the IDP tackle scoring)."

"If we instituted Steven's idea for threshold reduction and awardes 0.5 pts./reception, here's an example of what that would mean:

OLD FORMAT:

Chad Johnson-

4 receptions/ 63 yds/1 TD = 9 points

Laveraneus Coles-

5 receptions/49 yds/0 TD = 0 points

NEW FORMAT:

Chad Johnson-

4 receptions/63 yds/1 TD = 11 points

Lavernaneus Coles-

5 receptions/49 yards/0 TD = 4 points

As you can see, the CJ still outscores Coles by a large margin, but it does close the gap a bi and it prevents Coles from posting a donut in the scoring column."

"Old format :

100 yards = 6 points

New format:

100 yards = 6 points

The compensation rate remains the same(0.6 pts/10 yards), I think we're just talking about lowering yardage thresholds and not penalizing RB's who catch a few screen passes and WR's who run the occasional reverse. I'm all for maintain and retaining the value of a TD, but when Jerome Bettis and his 200 yards is outscoring a 1500 yard feature back...the rules need to be addressed. My opinion... "

Will provide more info upon request. Thanks again

Don't know if this matters, but I just want to clarify something that was alluded to by one of the owner quotes. We use multiple formations:

Pro Set: 2RB/2WR/1TE

Run n' Shoot: 1 RB/4WR

Empty Backfield: 5 WR

Wishbone: 3RB/2TE
