Dynasty League kickoff Draft? Auction? (1 Viewer)

I am starting a dynasty league this summer and wanted some advice. Roster size is 21, 3 taxi squad, no IDP.

Was thinking of...

Year 1:

1. Free Agent Auction using about $400 Budget/team for all Free Agents; leftover money used in-season for Free Agent bidding.

2. Rookie Draft, non-serpentine

Year 2 and beyond:

1. Free Agent Auction using about $200 Budget/team for all Free Agents; leftover money used in-season for Free Agent bidding.

2. Rookie Draft, non-serpentine.

My questions:

1. How quickly does the auction slow down, and is there any benefit to doing a partial auction/partial draft for free agents? ie, you agree to run an Auction for the first 50 players or so, then start drafting (whoever has the most money remaining gets first pick, etc.)?

2. Does anyone use the idea of a fixed budget for use in the Auction + In-Season F.A. bidding?

3. If the Rookie Draft is only going to be about 6 rounds, does it make sense to use NFL-style draft, 3RR, or Banzai instead?

Another idea totally would be to have a limited 'high value player' auction (say, 50-60 players deep), then just roll into a Free Agent/Rookie Draft afterwards. That would accomplish my goal of giving everyone a shot at the big name players, but then move into the more familiar territory of a draft.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

That sounds a lot like what we use. We have a salary cap which applies in the Auction and also the FA Bidding, along with a Rookie Draft. Except for following seasons, we increase the salary cap slightly and use that same cap, not create an entirely different one. We also use player contracts. It keeps the league fresh and there's a lot of strategy involved.I wouldn't be a fan of combining an auction and a draft, that just seems kind of unusual with no real reason for it. The auction remains plenty interesting until you get down to teams just filling up their roster.

We will be using player contracts also. The bolded part above is what I am trying to avoid in the initial Auction where we are filling rosters. I think it would be faster once we got thru about the first 10-15 players on each team.

I am liking this idea the best for our inaugural draft...I have some keeper and redraft friends joining me in my new Dynasty league. Since it is dynasty, I am sensitive to the idea that someone may REALLY covet MJD, Turner, ADP, etc. and might never see them if we do a standard draft to kick-off the league. But, I am slightly opposed to a 24-round Auction, esp with people who have never done one. I am thinking I would like to give everyone a shot at the big name players with a limited auction, but then move into the more familiar territory of a draft.Do you know of anyone/any league that has had a limited 'high value player' auction (say, 50-60 players deep), then just roll into a Free Agent/Rookie Draft afterwards?I am liking this idea the best for our inaugural draft, but I'm just trying to think if this could end up being really UNFAIR if guys run out of money. They could blow their wads on Turner and ADP and then sit and watch guys normally in the top 5 rounds slip away from them. But maybe that's the point...they've got their cake, eh?Each team would get $100 (assume 5 roster spots per team on average get filled, and $20 for each player). We bid on the top 50 players (per some standard Avg Draft list). At the end of that, we go to a draft, guy with the most money left gets the first pick, etc.

we did a 200 auction for our first draft and 1 through 12 draft order everyyear after. the rule was you could spend your money anyway you wanted such as buy 2 100 players but then you would have to wait until the waiver opened up to complete your roster. No one took advantage of this everyone just filled there rosters on draft day. now we do a nfl style draft worst team gets pick one every round and so on. auction is a must no matter what because it gives everyone a fair shot at any player. best way to start a dynasty.

This sounds like it self-regulates a bit. A few more questions, if that's ok....1. You say you used $200 for the auction, how many roster spots did you fill, and did people 'save' enough money to fill their rosters with $1 guys at the end?2. For the Auction, do you just go around the room and let people nominate players in turn? 3. Did some people end up with alot of money left over, or did they spend that on $5 kickers instead of $1 kickers at the end?4. At any point in the Auction, like when everyone is down to a few bucks and a few empty roster spots, does it turn into more of a draft? Thanks! Also, when you draft now, do you do serpentine drafts or NFL style draft?
