Dynasty League- Rules. scoring, settings & ideas (1 Viewer)

I'm looking to set up a start up dynasty league that has settings in place to create the best environment for skill, fairness, and keep league members together rather than looking for replacements each year.

Rules and settings that I'm pretty firm on keeping in place:

Auction- gives everyone an equal chance at all players. As the saying goes once you go auction you never go back.

Victory Points Scoring- still involves head to head scoring while you also earn points for total points scored each week. Each win is still 2 points and the top 1/3 in total points scored each week gets an additional 4 points, middle 3rd gets 2 points and bottom 3rd receives 0 additional points.

Decimal Scoring- you get points for each yard rather than needing to hit a certain yard mark. Example a player gains 73 yards he will get 7.3 points, rather than only getting 7 points because he did not reach 75 or 80 yards. Also you pretty much guarantee that there will be no ties.

Blind Bid Waivers- like in an auction all teams have a chance at all free agents. Also involves strategy on how to spend your budget.

Prize Money Split- instead of most of the money going to the top playoff finishers, split the winnings 50/50 between regular season and playoff winners. Example- regular season champ 35%, regular season 2nd place 15%, super bowl winner 35%, super bowl loser 15%. It seems like most years one of the top 2 teams in the regular season end up with nothing after the playoffs.

PPR scoring- seems to be more popular and what all my other leagues are.

No IDP- did it for a few years but it was not for me, just seemed to take away from the rest.

Doubleheaders- another way to reward the top scoring teams each week. If you have one of the top scores, you could still get beat by another top scoring team but odds are you will win at least one game. The all play or total points format takes away from the fun of head to head.

12 team league- again more of what I'm used to.

Rosters- deep rosters about 24 per team and flexible starting lineups 1QB, 2-3RB, 2-4WR, 1-2TE, 1PK?, 1 Def

Leaguesafe.com- being an internet league this should help many feel better about taking a leap of faith with a stranger from the web.

Deposit for the next year- a must to try and keep the same teams coming back. Example in a $100 league each team would also pay a $25- $50 deposit for the next year. This would carry over year to year so if you stay in the league you only pay this once. If a team drops out this could go into the prize money pot or be used to reduce the entry for a new team.

What ideas do you have for keeping players coming back?

Other Ideas:

No PK- can anyone really predict these guys? Way too many times out of nowhere for one week a PK hits 3 or more long bombs and racks up 15+ points. I would like to consider just getting rid of the PK.

Bench points- maybe each week have the option of replacing only one starter with a bench player, either name one bench player that could be used to replace a starter or use any one bench player to replace a low scoring starter.

Has anyone ever tried this? Could it work or will it just cause problems?

Free agents open year round- I have never used this, can I get opinions from those who have?

Opinions on these ideas and what rules / settings would you recommend that have helped your dynasty league.

Some things I've learned over the years...

- do a 14 team league...this allows no separate conferences and all teams to play each other once throughout the year. Reg Season wk1-13, Wk 14: #1 and #2 byes, #3 vs. #6, #4 vs. #5, wk. 15 2nd round of playoffs, wk.16: championship game, wk. 17 open.

- rather than a deposit just pay entry fee one season in advance. Year 1 you do a double payment of this year and next, than every year after all you're paying is for next year. If you quit on the league you lose this advanced payment and new team owner gets first year free to make the team their own (and fill the spot easily)

- incorporate 1 college player per roster. This is a cool twist in a league I started that everyone seems to enjoy and really adds a mix on strategy to your standard dynasty league

- Assign the league with a "Historian" who keeps track of all of the league's happenings. In spreadsheets, records trades, records, owner info, prize winnings, etc. Very cool to look back on this info as the league matures.

Agree with decimal scoring, no IDP and deep 24 man in-season rosters.

I have a Constitution I could pass along with all of these elements above and what I believe to be the "perfect" league setup (of course I'm biased though!). Just PM me your email address if any interest in seeing that.

What about the website you use to host? That's a biggie for me and people in my league. Myffl seems to be the most robust in terms of flexibility and customization, but the site looks and navigates like it's about a decade out of date. ESPN has a good draft room but requires java and keeps it simple for the masses. You can't get a good feel for the free trial provided by CBS because when you try to test out settings it takes you to the payment page. Yahoo charges $25/team for something as basic as live scoring so I'm immediately turned off by them.

Plus with all the aforementioned mainstream websites (ESPN, CBS, Yahoo), you don't get a good preview of the new rollouts until it's past when you would want to have an initial draft, and I don't know that they support year-round interaction.

Right now we're using Myffl but no one really likes it, including myself. But I don't know of a better designed site that enables things such as complex contracts.

My local dynasty league is dead set against deep rosters, since most of the league consists of casual owners that don't like the idea of the waiver wire being devoid of talent. They want the ability to plug in a waiver guy during the season if their team is lacking in certain areas. I'm not a big fan but I'm also more prepared and would just dominate that much more. Another point on rosters, you need to arrive at a balance between cutting too little or too many players prior to the rookie and/or FA draft. Again, my local league cuts down to 13 so this small roster size allows an increase in roster turnover from year to year. This helps out the weak owners to correct their mistakes year to year while IMO penalizes the strong owners who draft well and have to potentially cut starter quality players.

I would advise against this unless all owners are 24/7 football junkies. The casual owner needs time off.
