Dynasty Leagues findings (1 Viewer)

I've played in a 12 team IDP dynasty league for about 6 years now and one thing I noticed from our league is that providing the last place to first place owners ranking order in the rookie draft really doesn't seem to help with improving parity that much at all. The bottom feeders seem to stay down while the top owners seem to stay at the top. We have a 4 round rookie draft and if you finish last place you get #1, #13 pick and so on (not serpentine style like redraft leagues). Is there any additional leverage that can be made?

Here was an idea I had to help bottom feeders get more competitive..

Last place team gets #1 & #6 pick

2nd to last gets #2 and #7 pick

3rd to last gets #3 and #8 pick

4th to last gets #4 and #9 pick

5th to last gets #5 and #10 pick

6th to last gets #6 and #11 pick

6th best team gets #7 and #12 pick

5th best team gets #13 (1st pick in the 2nd round)

4th best team gets #14 pick (2nd pick in 2nd round)

3rd best team gets #15 pick (3rd pick in 2nd round)

2nd best team gets #16 pick (4th pick in 2nd round)

League champ doesn't get a rookie pick until #17th overall pick (5th pick in 2nd round)

Last place team gets #18 pick

then the sequence contiues normal from there.

Thoughts?

Dynasty is a lame format. Way too preditable. Way too easy to kick back, play with the waiver wire, cruise FBG near rookie draft time, etc. etc. etc. Way too easy to prey on the owners who don't know how to play.

Either you can play FF or you cannot. Doesn't matter what the format is. If you don't know NFL football, you can't a good NFL player from a so-so one, you don't know how to set-up for a draft based on scoring, then you are toast.

Those at the bottom need to work on their skills. Understand how they got there, what mistakes they made, and how not to repeat them.

Why doesn't the rookie draft improve parity? Because the owner's knowledge is the same. The sharks eat the guppies. Get rid of the guppies or turn them in sharks...

I also think it's important to acknowledge that the players available at picks 6-20 aren't necessarily much worse than the players available at picks 1-5. As much as we like to rank the rookies and set up our fancy little draft tiers, we still see a number of guys like Frank Gore, Steve Smith, Anquan Boldin, Brian Westbrook, Maurice Drew, and Chad Johnson emerge from relatively little hype.

The same thing will probably happen this next year. Some unheralded clown drafted in the third round will become one of the best players from this draft. It happens all the time.

Based on my experience, the best teams do well for the following reasons:

- They load up their roster with talent in the initial draft.

- They tend to draft well.

- They tend to trade well.

- They seem to have a greater ability to acquire high draft picks on the cheap. Some teams just have a knack for stockpiling draft picks without significantly damaging their roster. These teams have an advantage in the long run.

i think im going crazy

I don't know how to respond to your post. I love your last three paragraphs, hate the first one. But your hate of dynasty isn't new so I'm not surprised. To the original poster, I'd say that looking for new ways to prop up bad teams is a mistake. If the team is bad but the owner is solid, he'll get it turned around with patience and without additional gimmicks. If the owner isn't good, propping him up at other owners' expense just covers up and delays the fact that he probably should stick to redraft where his mistakes don't carry over from year to year.

You're not going crazy. His rants against dynasty are pretty consistent. It begs the question, why does he read dyansty threads in the first place, and why does he waste his time responding this way when others obviously enjoy the format? No one is forcing the format or the threads on him.Nightshift - love ya man, I just don't get your hate of dynasty.

Patience in dynasty can take 3-5 years+ though to get things turned around..might happen in as short as 2-3 years with some really good luck and could take 5+ years if you have some really bad luck with your high draft picks turning out to be busts along the way (this is just bad LUCK and not lack of skill if consensus opinion on high draft picks don't pan out). I agree there are some very clear reasons why some owners stay guppies and others are sharks (trade blunders, not putting in enough research time etc.). I guess I just would like to see some acceleration from top teams to bottom and bottom to top teams thats all. I just though doing added leverage to the rookie draft might be a way to accomplish that.

Yet he plays in them. I know that for a fact.

One thing we do in the Fantasy Legends Leagues is make the better teams play a tougher schedule the following season. Each team still plays teams within their division twice. Games played outside the division is based upon the standings of the previous year. Weaker teams get an easier 3 game schedule, better teams get a harder 3 game schedule. 1) First place teams play teams 1, 2, and 4 from the other division.2) Second place teams play teams 1, 3, and 53) Third place teams play teams 2, 3, and 64) Fourth place teams play teams 1, 4, and 55) Fifth place teams play teams 2, 4, and 66) Sixth place teams play teams 3, 5, and 6

I think you have to divide dynasty into the 2 camps

1 - some think only Dynasty league is where you can keep all players as long as you want. These are hard to turn around in 2-3 years. Teams on top tend to stay there.

2 - Some think Dynasty league is where you can keep around 1.5 the number of starting lineup. You start 10 each week; you can keep 15 from team year to year. Usually have between 20-24 man rosters. This type of dynasty league allows teams to turn around easier; usually in 2-3 years if no bad luck.

I know for sure I went 2-11 in MOX 1 a few years ago and 11-2 the next year. Last year I didn't make the playoffs, and this year I did, but wasn't that strong.

It's like eating a food that everyone says is great, but you can't seem to appreciate it. So you try it a few times, cooked different ways, and it isn't right. I keep looking for what's good about a dynasty league but can't seem to find it. I will refrain from trashing dynasty (even it still sucks).Off that issue - every so often, someone posts the same crap about parity in a dynasty league (in re-draft, you don't have to ask the really bad owners back). The problem really isn't league rules, setup , etc. - it's the owners who can't play worth a crap. So either help the dude(s) out, teach them or at least point them in the right directions or stop whining. THERE IS NO PARITY IN FF.

Dynasty leagues RULE. I quit redrafts 2 years ago, and have never looked back. But you can turn around teams quickly. I've seen it done many times. 2 years and you can go from worst to near first.

:tfp: I love the dynasty format as well.

Do you want some advice from the Champ in HyperActive League to help you next year?

Steel is a fierce competitor, but my experience from playing in the same league as him is that he doesn't quite have the patience to appreciate the dynasty format. When your strategy is constantly, "Win now at absolutely every cost," you probably aren't going to find dynasty leagues very appealing in the long haul. I like the challenge of trying to find tomorrow's superstars and build a lasting winner. That's what keeps me coming back. I also like the idea that if I manage to build a great squad, I can reap the benefits over multiple seasons.

Right Nick. They just play better. Consistently. Why?- Devotion of time. I mean, you know the type. Guys that are constantly involved in football from a fantasy perspective. During the season they watch college & pro games with fantasy in mind. They are analyzing players & teams from that perspective. (Kinda ruins just watchin' football for football sake.) THERE IS NO OFF SEASON FOR THEM. If you are in a league with this type of players & you don't want to devote that kind of time & energy, get out & find a more casual league. Those sharks will eat you alive.

- Learning from past errors. Really sitting down & taking a look at your drafts, your season, etc. to see what went right & what went wrong. Understand how to improve.

- Learning from others. When someone on this board (or other ones) posts about XYZ player that you have no idea about, what do you do? Research, Research, Research. Don't take anyone's word for it. You be amazed how many so-called gurus really don't know squat.

- Practice, Practice, Practice. Before a draft, do you run through a mock version? How many times?
