Dynasty Leagues with no offseason free agency (1 Viewer)

Anybody else in a league like this? Christ, it makes the offseason so boring!!

Commish seems to harp on being a 'year around league' but we have our 4 round rookie/FA draft in May & then nothing for 4 months until the regular season in Sept. 75% of the league doesn't bother checking into and why should we?

Brought the issue up last offseason, but the commish didn't respond.Is there any sort of reason NOT to have free agency from May to Sept?? The last thing I want to do from May - Sept is have to follow baseball.....

I think the issue is not having one but how you handle it in the end. I personally have been in leagues that run process week to week and that sucks for those not around. I have been in leagues with FCFS and that is even more unfair to the league. I remember when Colston was named starter in NO and the 2 guys on computer at time of news got the guy. I guess a 2nd draft in August sometime would be good but it can be an advantage to the bottom team. Some type of auction type FA in the off-season is the best one I have seen with certain periods to bid. Everyone gets 100 and you got 3 periods between May and start of season.

 
I agree with the OP that it's very boring in this type of league. I also agree that FCFS free agency during training camp (when news comes out all day every day) is ofter unfair in the allocation of players. For example, let's say Frank Gore gets carted off the field during practice one day and is scheduled for an MRI the next. How long do you think it will be before Thomas, Robinson and Coffee are all claimed? - it will certainly be before some of the owners get home from work. I'd actually like to see a format where you get blind bidding dollars immediately after the rookie draft (assuming that draft is prior to camp opening) that can be used both before and during the season, but once gone you get the Friday FCFS leftovers each week.

 
i run 3 dynasty leagues. add/drop locks once SB starts week 16. our draft are rookies and FAs, drafts are June 1st. after the draft the WW is open, first come first get till the season starts. i do not see the big deal with add/drop being locked for 6 months. if the rosters are large like my leagues(23 players per roster), then there are no players to pick up

 
We run our league through MFL and are having a great off-season so far! Everyone has their own bank of "fantasy cash" that gets carried throughout the year. There is a $75 refill at beginning of the NFL season and and $50, plus $2 for every loss, refill at the end of the season. This money is used for:

-blind bidding during the season

-FA auction that runs throughout our offseason (right after the NFL draft until our rookie draft in june, then commences again until preseason).

-trading amongst teams

It works great, people are wheeling and dealing all off season and it makes it that much more fun. I thought, as commish, it would be a hassle to keep track of but it's surprisingly simple. The auction rules are that you have to be the highest bidder for 24 hours to win a player so sometimes players are on the board for quite awhile. The rookie draft will be 24 hours per pick so that will probably last almost half a month to a month.

And trades are allowed all season long, we just extend the review period to a week during the offseason.

This sounds like a great format for year round activity . . .

Almost every free agent move that results in a starter changing teams will potentially open a spot up. I am certain that if you opened up FA tomorrow, there would be a flurry of add/drops.

i agree. owners would drop the old players and pick up youth. been doing it this way for 10 years with very little complaints
 
In one of my dynasty leagues for most of the year FA is open on a FCFS.We shut down after our title game and open back the day after the Super Bowl.We shut down the Mon. after the NFL rookie draft for 2 wks,our rookie draft is held 2 wks after the NFL rookie draft on a Sat. this year its gonna be held May 9th. 6am.We open up FA on a FCFS the day after our rookie draft is over.We shut down when NFL training camps open up and stay that way until the season starts.

We have high activity during the offseason,this offseason we have had about 15 trades at 10dollars a pop,hundreds of trade offers/transactions.

I think a dynasty should be open most of the year.

I finally got a team in a real dynasty-contract league. We have $250 cap. Must have 40 players when season starts. Max=55 players. 125 contract years available per team. We declare 4 restricted free agents in March and bid only on those players. Must have the high bid for 24 hrs. Original owner of RFA's can match the offer. Rookie draft started Monday with a 24 hour clock. Any free agents can be nominated for auction at any time after the RFA auctiuon is over. Busiest league I have ever been involved in and it is for no money, buit quickly becoming my favorite.

 
Any commish that does that is an idiot. Yes, an IDIOT. Dynasty league means year round and that includes the waiver wire.

i really don't know what big deal is......it's called THE OFFSEASON for a reason. i've found that some owners having nothing else going on but fantasy football. and that is just a shame really.

you can always have a long ended rookie/FA draft with like a 2 day timer once the real draft is done.

Auction/salary cap is the only way to go. Once you've done it, any other way seems silly.

that is just plain silly, even the NFL has an offseason. you can't expect everyone in the league to be available 12 months a year, when it's FANTASY FOOTBALL, and the games only matter between sept-feb.i wouldn't want to ever join a league where free agency was the whole offseason or year round. there should be a rookie/FA draft in there. trading in there, and then open up free agency at the start of the season with blind bidding. any leagues that run first come first serve waivers in today's age is just plain silly.
 
I close the waiver wire between the end of the fantasy superbowl for adimistraitve purposes, rule changes and fees payment primarily. the league i commish both open before FEB 15, so basically we are closed for the major bowls and NFL playoffs. Outside of that some version FA runs except around the rookie draft.

I know we are fantasy addicts on this board, but I for one like a little down time.Let's me recharge my fantasy batteries, and by the time the rookie/FA draft rolls around I'm chomping at the bit to start, much like the beginning of the NFL season.
 
Some good suggestions here. I guess I take issue with someone promoting a league as a "Year Round League" yet is really only a 5-6 month league [Aug/Sept - Dec] & [May Rookie/FA draft].

Don't mind some down time, but if the league's going to be a ghost town 6-7 months/year, I'd have rather joined a redraft league. FCFS isn't necessary year round, but an auction process or weekly waivers would be nice. You can only trade so much.

Yup, I outlined our year round dynasty league above but there is still down time. I would say from Feb-April there isnt too much going on, couple of trades here and there. And then the auction last all season but there isnt too much going on.I think what really would help is being in a league that has a lot of active folks. Our 12 team league has about 4 really active teams, 4 teams who check daily or every other day, and 4 teams who make the effort.
 
in a perfect world, sure 12 months a year of activity sounds great. But I think many of us with jobs, kids, family, vacations, we NEED some time off from our dynasty leagues. I'm glad my 10 leagues have a few months off each year. Not sure my wife would tolerate anything more than the March-Dec months anyway :bag:

 
I commish a pretty active league year round.

After week 17 up until the super bowl we allow 3 total adds (expand rosters to 33) considered the supp draft- no drops at this time. We then draft in beginning of May. It seems to keep the people around. We've had at least 2 or 3 trades a week on average from when everyone paid until the draft. Now the draft is rolling. After that, we'll open up weekly waivers by blind bid. Just start the blind bid money for the season early- no refills or any of that crap. WHy make something more complicated then it has to be. During the season we do blind bids on Fri. eve (after injury report) then allow FCFS up until gametime

seems like the best formula i've seen

Sorry I hit the sensitive button guys. Yes, my choice of words were poor, so I apologize for that. Let's just say that I disaprove of suspending waiver pickups for months at a time. Some downtimie, maybe a couple of weeks to do some admin stuff, but most expect to be able to pickup players most of the year.
 
I've got no problem with suspending waiver pick ups. It allows us to have a veteran auction that is a big deal to kick off the season in the same way that a redraft gets kicked off by their draft.

But it isn't like we don't have a lot of events in the off-season. Our schedule includes:

* Roster cut downs (for teams whose IR players made active again put them over roster limits)

* Declaring franchise and transition tags.

* Auction held for franchise and transition tagged players.

* Owners deciding to match winning bids and take draft pick compensation, or retain at winning bid.

* Rookie draft (which normally generates around 10-20 off-season trades)

* Roster cut downs (we expand roster limits and cap in the offseason so you have room to add rookies without having to cut players).

* Declare contract extensions on your players starting the last year of their contracts.

* Final cut date to make cap and roster space before vet auction.

* Vet auction

 
I think basically what I'm seeing from this is you need to play with like-minded guys.

Some guys like year round activity, check their leagues every day, etc. That's what I do. I like this hobby enough to be that involved.

Then there are other guys who don't want to do that (usually saying "I have a family, job, etc etc"... although I don't understand what they are implying here... I'll bet almost every person who checks their leagues every day typically has a family and a job too.)

Most of my leagues have year round WW. It's fun, and stuff happens all year. The leagues that don't have this... well, I don't like those leagues as much, that's for sure.

The implication is this:If you aren't as into fantasy football as me, you aren't serious. If you are MORE into fantasy football than me, then you are a dweeb with no life.

What happens is u run dynasties, therefor people come and go, it is obsurd u lock FA's, cuz the newbies can not shape there team, plus if FA's are allowed to Sign in the NFL, why cant they be able to get added in a Fantasy league? Im in 10 leagues and one that he commishes i am in, and this is nothing personal, butthe league that im in that he commishes is to be the most boring league I HAVE EVER SEEN, Watching paint dry is more fun, I post and post and post, yet no responses from the dead that live within the league! He said he has seen # trades, dude I dont remember the # he said,but i remember that one league im in made that in an hour!

I play in both types of dynasty leagues and both have advantages. Last year Pierre Thomas was in the rookie/FA draft. It adds a little more depth to the draft and makes the 3rd round a little more interesting than just the crapshoot that it can become with just rookies.

I don't know which I like better but I don't think it means that die hard fantasy players still can't follow during the offseason and adjust their draft boards accordingly. Just because you aren't making a waiver move doesn't mean you aren't involved in the league.

What happens is u run dynasties, therefor people come and go, it is obsurd u lock FA's, cuz the newbies can not shape there team, plus if FA's are allowed to Sign in the NFL, why cant they be able to get added in a Fantasy league? Im in 10 leagues and one that he commishes i am in, and this is nothing personal, butthe league that im in that he commishes is to be the most boring league I HAVE EVER SEEN, Watching paint dry is more fun, I post and post and post, yet no responses from the dead that live within the league! He said he has seen # trades, dude I dont remember the # he said,but i remember that one league im in made that in an hour!

The league has had 15 trades in 4 months, with some big named players getting moved(Ryan, Moss, Portis, Bowe, Forte, MJD, Gore, TJ H). all owners check in on a regular bases. It is boring to you b/c no one replies to your trash talking or does not make a contour trade offer to your absurd trade offer?

The bottom line is you agree to the rules of a league before you join. If you do not like the league do not play.

What happens is u run dynasties, therefor people come and go, it is obsurd u lock FA's, cuz the newbies can not shape there team, plus if FA's are allowed to Sign in the NFL, why cant they be able to get added in a Fantasy league? I play in FSUfan's league. great league, great commish, active/great owners. there is a reason the league has been around for 10 years

Then u always have false advertising, saying its an active league, half those moves are mine, and I have seen more then half the league members not log in for weeks at a time, um not here to bash.....i just say the truth, If I hit a nerve its because u feel something is wrong....And yes to another above statement to Manhood = not caring what people think, u say thats whats wrong with the world, dude this is a football related site, lets remember everything is reletive to football, if someone says ur an idiot, it means from what we can tell when u type here, your an idiot. So keep in mind that if that has to be reminded to anyone, well, thats whats really wrong with the world.

And to say again, no offseason waiver wire is nonsense! many moves, i mean many moves had been made in the nfl already, not only that u should be able to prepare ur squad for what ur looking for in the draft....but yes everyone get mad at me for what i say, cuz everything i say is untrue......i guess just a bunch of sensative people here! Dude im know for saying whats on my mind here, im not here to make friends, none of u guys will be at my wedding, have any input in my bills or put food on my table, so what u think of me and my words dont mean a thing to me!
