Now is the time to start looking at waiver wires for those unfortunate dynasty owners who didn't make the playoffs. I'm looking for guys who are possibly available in average dynasty leagues. I would rather have a guy with upside (but a low probability of success) than an average player who just plugs along. I call those cheap players "lottery tickets" because they're cheap to get, and have a chance for a big reward, but in all likelihood you'll be discarding them in the fantasy football trash can by next training camp.
I try to find players that could be in for a bigger role next year, either because they'll be moving to another team or because people blocking their way will likely leave via free agency. These are my favorite players to target, because often you'll know whether things broke in their favor by the end of the NFL draft. Often these types of players become over-hyped in the off-season, and you can trade them for a good sized return (with no real investment) by your rookie draft.
Who are you looking at?
Here are a couple of players I've recently acquired off the waiver wire:
Tre McBride (Major hype pre-NFL draft, but coming from a small school often requires additional time at the WR position)
Brian Quick (Looked good last season before going down with injury, still pretty young)
Christine Michael (I know past disappointments, but look at the cost.)
