Williams is available as well. Do you prefer him over Wilson? I read an interesting article about Chris Carter recruiting Williams to try out football in HS, seems he's finally living up to the potential with Watkins gone.

De'runnya looks to have the frame to dominate. Mike Williams has more speed and a bit more fluid. I think Mike's ceiling is DeVante Parker, but he's gonna need to polish up his game like Parker did. There is some Sidney Rice and Leonard Hankerson to his game, too.

Wilson is much more athletic than I thought he would be for his size. Great body control and quick feet...the opposite of what one would think for a 6'5 player.

Williams soured a bit on my list because I don't see a high ceiling for him. High floor player that does a lot well, but don't see greatness.

 
Where do you guys stand on this?

Competitive teams likely to have later draft picks, do you think it's worth paying a premium in rookie draft picks to trade up for early devy picks that, despite being risky, give you a shot at elite prospects a year or three out that you'd never be able to touch when they come out in the rookie draft?

Basically, is the trade off worth it? If you can trade a bundle of rookie picks likely to be late in each round for one early devy pick, is it worth the risk of whiffing completely to add a player would could be a future high rookie draft pick (in non-devy leagues) to a team that would otherwise be too good to have a shot at them?

Yes. But the deeper the league, the more worthless those Rookie picks become anyway. Making them harder to move.

Definitely. My devy league is just 1-round, so they hold most of their value. This type of deal for a top devy pick would probably require the entire slate of next year's picks, which is where the risk comes in if you whiff. But if you have one of the better teams in the league it's your only shot at obvious top prospects anyways.

Oregon signee Kirk Merritt ran a 10.52 100m at regional finals a couple days ago.

That's faster than the lifetime bests of Cordarrelle Patterson and Andre Johnson. It's level with Sammy Watkins's best 100m time. It's slightly faster than Adrian Peterson's best wind-legal time of 10.56. All of those NFL guys ran 4.40-4.42 at the combine/pro day, which points towards an eventual 4.40-4.42 combine 40 time for Merritt based on his current PR. If he can crank it up to a 10.3-10.4 at the state meet, that will have him looking like a definite 4.3X guy.

Very good time. He's approaching Bush/Best/Spiller/Charles territory. A 10.2-10.3 at the state meet would put him in that conversation.

He was my top player in this HS class and I don't see how Oregon is going to keep him off the field next year unless he has stone hands and can't play RB. Could be Josh Huff on roids at WR or just an insane speed/quickness/power option at RB. Good for the Ducks. Not good for the rest of the PAC.

Texas A&M sophomore WR Speedy Noil has missed spring activities due to off-field reasons.

"Speedy has some things he’s got to complete," Kevin Sumlin said, adding it has nothing to do with medical issues. We are guessing the absence is academic related. After plenty of buzz last offseason, Noil finished his freshman campaign as the Aggies' No. 3 receiver from a production standpoint.

Texas A&M freshman WR Christian Kirk "has been a revelation" since arriving for spring practices, according to Jeff Tarpley.

"He carries himself like an upperclassman and physically he looks like one too," Tarpley writes. "He’s impressed everyone around the program with his work ethic and attention to detail." Kirk has mainly been working in the slot and reportedly possesses great quickness to separate from defensive backs and linebackers. This time last year, Speedy Noil was receiving plenty of buzz. However, with Noil missing time, Kirk could be a focal point in the underneath and intermediate areas.

Very Excited about C. Kirk....A&M also got a transfer from former 5 star Oklahoma RB Keith Ford this week. He'll be a RS JR in 2016.

High school WR Devin Duvernay "could be very hard to handle," notes ESPN's Tom Luginbill.

Duvernay is a three-and-out candidate. "Pound for pound, Duvernay is one of the best athletes in this class, and with technical refinement as a route runner (which just about every prospect needs coming out)," Luginbill wrote. "He is built like Dez Bryant was when he came out of high school. On talent alone, Duvernay should see the field quickly and move the chains in a fashion that will make scouts take notice." ESPN ranks Duvernay as the No. 48 prospect in the 2016 class. Duvernay has not yet committed to a school.

South Carolina WR commit Kyle Davis "has impact-ready talent plus the measurables to boot," notes ESPN's Tom Luginbill.

ESPN ranks Davis as the No. 37 prospect in the 2016 ESPN 300. "There are plenty of big receivers standing on every street corner, but not many who can move like Davis," Luginbill wrote. "He has receiver speed, tailback power and he can play from the slot. If he lands with a quarterback early he'll be one to watch for early production." If all goes according to plan, Davis could be a three-and-out player.

The scribe thinks Sanders is a three-and-out candidate. "Aside from Christian Hackenberg, Sanders is arguably the most exciting offensive weapon Penn State has seen in years," Luginbill wrote. "Utility weapons who can create matchup problems are also becoming quite coveted in today's NFL game." ESPN ranks Sanders as the No. 67 prospect in the 2016 ESPN 300.

Sports on Earth's Matt Brown believes Clemson sophomore QB Deshaun Watson is the nation's best quarterback but adds that there "is danger in letting the hype get out of control."

"He'll be playing behind a questionable offensive line that just unexpectedly lost its best player, left tackle Isaiah Battle, to the supplemental draft," he wrote. "He lost offensive coordinator Chad Morris to SMU. Go ahead, add up the negatives. There are significant caveats here." That said, and despite only starting five games during his freshman campaign, Brown is ready to go all in on Watson. "He's mature beyond his years as a quarterback, with a command of the offense, a strong arm, confidence, poise and mobility -- all of which he showed the minute he stepped onto the field," Brown wrote. "If he stays healthy, he's a superstar and a Heisman candidate, whether it's this year or next. Despite the hang-ups entering 2015, it's worth betting on his stardom sooner rather than later."

Ohio State redshirt sophomore QB J.T. Barrett "doesn't have [Cardale] Jones' arm strength, but he's proved to be a terrific distributor and point guard for the offense, in addition to being a dangerous runner in this system," writes Sports on Earth's Matt Brown.

"He's a better passer than [braxton] Miller and a more explosive runner than Jones," Brown wrote. The draft expert ranks Barrett as the No. "3B" signal-caller in the land, divvying that spot to whoever wins OSU's QB competition. Barrett broke a school-record with 3,772 total yards in 2014, putting up 2,834 passing yards, 938 rushing yards and 45 total touchdowns, a Big Ten record. "He did have poor passing games against great Virginia Tech and Penn State defenses, but he also threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns on the road at Michigan State, after the offensive line had improved," Brown wrote.

Sun Sentinel's Christy Cabrera Chirinos reports that Miami sophomore QB Brad Kaaya was named to the Maxwell Award watch list, the award is given annually to college football's player of the year.

The 6-foot-4, 209-pound Kaaya had a breakout season for the Hurricanes, as he was named the ACC Rookie of the Year as a true freshman. The Miami prospect passed for 3,198 yards and 26 touchdowns last season.

Auburn freshman RB Kerryon Johnson "is one of those guys that has (Darren) McFadden-like ability," Auburn offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee notes.

"He's more than a scat back. He's an every down playmaker," Lashlee tol AL.com. "Kerryon is one of those guys that has (Darren) McFadden-like ability, when you look back at guys that Tim (Horton) and I and coach (Malzahn) have all coached, a guy that can really do it all. He's big enough, he's athletic enough to be an every down back, he can play receiver, he can probably take snaps at quarterback. The 6-foot, 195-pound Johnson rushed for 1,659 yards and 25 touchdowns, caught 22 passes for 598 yards and eight TDs as a senior at Madison Academy, earning Alabama's Mr. Football honors. Look for HC Gus Malzahn to try and find a way to get the versatile play maker on the field immediately.

West Virginia head coach Dana Holgerson called redshirt sophomore WR Shelton Gibson the fastest player he has ever coached.

This includes former WVU receiver Tavon Austin, who ran a 4.34 forty and 4.01 20 yard short shuttle at the Combine. Gibson only recorded four catches for 60 yards last season, but a team of Mountaineer receivers will need to combine to make up for the production lost with Kevin White.

J.T. Barrett - QB - Buckeyes

ESPN's Travis Haney reports that the receivers at the Elite 11 camped "raved" that Ohio State redshirt sophomore QB J.T. Barrett was "the best college QB throwing to them."

To give some context, the camp's college signal-callers included a trove of Heisman contenders and stud draft prospects, including Cody Kessler, Christian Hackenberg, Josh Dobbs and Deshaun Watson. "Even though [Cardale] Jones would seem to have the lead right now simply because he’s the healthiest, several college coaches familiar with the situation -- and who know Barrett -- believe he’ll eventually win back the job he held for the majority of the 2014 season," Haney wrote. "The high school QB prospects [at Elite 11] mentioned him first when asked about the college QBs." Don't be surprised if Barrett beats out Jones for the QB job, just as he did last summer. Barrett posted 3,772 total yards in 2014 (2,834 passing yards, 938 rushing yards) with 45 touchdowns.

WalterFootball predicts that "it wouldn't be surprising if 2015 is a tough year" for Miami sophomore Brad Kaaya and his teammates.

That said, the site ranks him as the No. 3 QB in the 2017 class, ahead of even Cal's Jared Goff. "Sources say that they think that Kaaya has the potential to become a breakout star in 2015 or 2016," WF wrote. "He has a good physical skill set and showed some pocket-passing ability to go along with poise." So why might he not have a huge breakthrough year in 2015? "He has lost a ton of talent around him in the form of a stud left tackle (Ereck Flowers), wide receiver (Phillip Dorsett) and running back (Duke Johnson) to the NFL," WF wrote. The site grades him as a Rds. 1-3 prospect. The 6-foot-4, 209-pound Kaaya won the ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year award in 2014, completing 58.5 percent of his attempts for 3,198 yards with a 26/12 TD/INT rate (8.5 yards per attempt).

With Thomas Tyner being shelved for year with a shoulder injury, one of my biggest focus this year will be watching Royce Freeman. Freeman bust into the scene last year winning first team all PAC-12. He totaled 18 touchdowns and more than 1500 total yards as a Freshman. Freeman put himself in a great positions to be talked about with the likes of Fournette and Chubb. Freeman stands 5'11 weighing in at about 225. He's got the frame for a 3 down back at the next level. He doesn't have great speed but he does have great quickness with a noticeable "next level" burst. Freeman has decent hands, he wasn't really the pass catching back last year, he will get a chance to expand on that role this year. With that expanded role, we will get a chance to evaluate that further.

Royce projects to be a 3 down back at the next level. He's great inbetween the tackles with a very strong stiff arm. He can turn the corner and get outside if he needs to. He has decent vision for a freshman that he showed last year. He will have to learn more patience as a RB at the next level with < 4.50 speed.

Christian McCaffrey - RB - Cardinal

Stanford sophomore RB Christian McCaffrey's game has been referred to as "shifty," "slippery," and "elusive."

Based on McCaffrey's name (his dad was a stud NFL possession receiver), size (6-foot, 215 pounds) and skin color, his game is going to be stereotyped as heavy on muscle and heart and short on athleticism. In fact, he's a burst-read-slip-charge-fall forward type who should intrigue zone blocking teams if he continues to improve. "Any time you're a bigger back and you're called elusive, that's a good thing," McCaffrey said. Cardinal offensive coordinator Mike Bloomgren is targeting 20-25 touches per game for McCaffrey this fall. "He needs to touch the ball that many times," Bloomgren said. "Whether that's screens or a punt return, however we need to do it, the ball needs to be in his hands. ... He's too freaking valuable. He's going to be all over the place." McCaffrey collected 796 all-purpose yards last season.

I'm covering the B1G now and here are 3 down the road true freshmen devy prospects from the conference to keep a close eye on:

1. Torrance Gibson WR/QB Ohio State- A 4 star athlete recruited by OSU to play QB, he recently switched to WR so he wouldn't have to redshirt as a freshman. While it's possible his career could follow the Devin Gardner route and he'll eventually switch back to QB, I wouldn't bet on it. Gibson is a massive talent at WR (think Julio Jones/AJ Green) and if he is able to make an impact at the position in 2015, expect him to see a quick path to NFL millions and stick at WR instead of sitting behind JT Barrett in 2016. OSU is loaded at WR, so Gibson probably won't start but expect him to make some big plays a la Devin Smith this year before taking over as the top WR in 2016. This is a 6'4, 200+ pound guy who runs in the 4.4s and is incredibly smooth and elusive for a player his size. There's very little video of Gibson at WR out there yet since he played QB in high school but he played WR at a few 7-on-7 tourneys and this video gives a short glimpse of what he looks like at WR. Has a shot to be the first WR taken in 2018.

2. LJ Scott RB Michigan State- A 4 star recruit from OH that most of the top programs wanted, he chose MSU in part due to their success lately in putting RBs into the NFL (LeVeon Bell, Jeremy Langford, Javon Ringer, etc.) and Scott looks like he will be next in that line of pro prospects. He's a little bit raw and might not open the season as the starter, but expect him to take over the lead back role sometime this season. Big, relatively fast and soft hands. Has drawn some early comparisons to Bell. Some senior highlights.

3. Mike Weber RB Ohio State- After a down-to-the-wire recruiting battle between Michigan and Ohio State, the Detroit native chose the Buckeyes. Before suffering a minor knee injury (sidelined for the rest of camp and probably a week or two of the regular season), Weber was highly impressive and drew comparisons to Carlos Hyde. Weber looks like the heir apparent to Zeke Elliott and is the favorite to win the starting job in 2016. Weber isn't tall but is a big power back at 215 and has surprised with just how quick his feet are. Weber as a senior.

Virginia Tech recorded 27 pressures against Ohio State QB J.T. Barrett during last season's contest.

The link below is filled with quality J.T. Barrett info, so give the people over at CFB Film Room a look. Virginia Tech handed OSU their only loss last season, and much of it can be pinned on the Hokies' Bear front and the Buckeyes' inability to match it. It is just a guess, but expect Urban Meyer and OSU to be ready for it this season. Those 27 pressures made up 21 percent of Barrett's total for the season, across 12 games.

UCLA HC Jim Mora Jr. went nuclear on freshman QB Josh Rosen after several mistakes during Wednesday's practice, saying "you can’t hit an open receiver down field with no defense."

Mora absolutely shredded Rosen during practice, yelling, among other things, "That’s why you have not been named the starter" and "Go back to [bellflower St. John High] and beat some more [bad] teams." He also sarcastically referred to the freshman as "The Anointed One." This is all cringe-inducing, but we probably shouldn't read too much into it. Mora is a high-strung coach and these kinds of blowups sometimes happen in practice, even if this was a bit harsh. Rosen and Jerry Neuheisel are competing for the starting job. Needless to say, neither has been awarded the job as of yet.

My top 3 incoming Freshmen WRs

1. Lawrence Cager, Miami - - 6-5 210. Excellent movement skills. Has the quickness and agility of a 6' guy. Just turned 18 the other day.

2. Miles Boykin, Notre Dame - - 6-3 225. Very long arms and muscular lower body. Recently tested 38.5" Vertical and 15 bench reps of 225. Here is a pic that shows how well built he is, #81 on the left: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CMWuX3iUkAIoN2f.jpg

3. Auden Tate, Florida State - - 6-4 215. Incredible body control and catch radius.
