[DYNASTY] Rebuilding (1 Viewer)

In one of my leagues, it seems the majority of the teams are "rebuilding", some seem to be in a constant state of rebuilding, while others do it once and work with it.

I'm pretty much rebuilding, as I traded my old players for a bunch of 2nd year players, but don't have any valuable rookie picks right now (earliest being in the high 70s). I consider this a rebuild, but not a complete tear down. (I still have a well above average team).

The question is have you rebuilt, and what's your strategy when you rebuild?

Even if you haven't, how would you?

Just took over a really terrible abandoned dynasty team that is going to be a multi-year project to get on its feet. Don't have much to share yet, but I'm finding patience is the most important thing to rebuilding.

Other teams have been constantly barraging me with trade offers trying to strip me of my few decent players in return for peanuts. Since it's the offseason, most of my older vets are undervalued in my eyes while picks are at premium. Doesn't seem to make much sense to me to trade away what I've got right now when someone might really need it and pay more during the season.

The waiting sucks, it's going to take a long while before my team is anywhere near competitive.

I am in the middle of a complete tear down...

Our 1st yr was 2003

my team has been hurt by injury each of the last 2 yrs....

this was what my starting lineup looked like prior to the over haul:

Hasslebeck(1yr)

Dillon(RFA)

Holt(2), Kennison(1),Burleson(1) Krob(1), Glenn(RFA) Ward(RFA)

LJ Smith(5), Winslow(8)

Kaeding(3)

Strahan(RFA), JHenderson(RFA)(Jared Allen (2)) Start 2

Ray Ray(1), Pierce(6), Bockwoldt(3) or Thorton(RFA)

STaylor(8), Chavous(1), Demps(RFA)

now this offseason I have traded just about every RFA and 1yr player...

GONE:

Hasslebeck, Dillon, Holt, Kennison, Ward, Strahan, Henderson, Ray Ray

now we are in RFA and so far I have aquired Chambers but his price got bumped up a bit high so i will be shopping him after RFA as well as shopping Burleson and KRob(already have one offer pending for Nate and Krob)

What I have aquired in dealing away those players:

1.1

1.11

2.13

3.1

3.11

4.14

8.11

3rd in 2007

5th in 2007

JUlbrich(2)

Engram(1)

$30(we only get $50/yr)*

I will have the most cash by a mile when its all said and done and next yr there are tons of RFAs to target: ChadJohnson Boldin Edge, Bulluck, Peterson, Hasslebeck just to name a few

Now my starting team looks like this

Nall(picked him up in FA for $1 prior to RFA) or McMahon

KFaulk MFaulk

Krob Burleson Engram(but I plan on moving Krob and Burleson for cash or picks so my WRs will only be worse....I also hope to be able to move CHAMBERS after RFA otherwise he will be a starter)

LJ SMith

Kaeding

JAllen Stroud

Pierce Ulbrich Bockwoldt

Taylor Bullocks Demps(i might not activate Bullocks off the DTS)

that squad will suck very bad this yr and should most likely end up with 1.1 next yr plus whatever I cherry pick in RFA next yr so i hope to compete again in 2007

I will not be activating whoever it is i draft at 1.1...or 1.2 if i trade down one pick

10 years ago I took over a team that finished 11th out of 12 the year before. The only really good player on the team was Ricky Watters. I picked Eddie George with 1.02 that year. Once I was eliminated from playoff contention I starting shopping Watters, figuring I could get some good young players for him while he still had value. I traded him to a playoff bound team for Rashan Salaam, Eddie Kennison (both of which were rookies with 9+ TDs IIRC), and a 1st round pick. Those two players were busts, but I traded that pick for Marvin Harrison before the draft the next year. I was then able to fill in the rest of my roster around Eddie and Marvin and made the playoffs several years with them.

I tend to build my teams from the bottom up, meaning I prefer a nucleus of young players. The real benefit of this strategy is that you're building on top of your team each season, instead of being forced to fill holes created by the decline of the veterans that you drafted to "win now." This allows me to pursue the best player available in rookie drafts and to build powerful young depth (because your starters aren't retiring anytime soon).

The strategy is always pretty much the same. Draft/buy players whose values are likely to increase. Avoid/sell players whose values are unlikely to increase. Once you accumulate some nice excess assets, trade them for proven stars in the prime of their careers.

I'm pretty much in a constant state of rebuilding. Shopping my older RBs, acquiring the good WRs that are 30-32 years old that people are pretty happy to part with, future draft picks, and the younger RBs in 3rd down roles, or RBBC that I find promising.

i gutted one of my MOX 3 dynasty teams. I need was RB and a good, young QB.

I felt after 2 years of sucking it was about time to start over.

I wouldn't consider this rebuilding, if you're pursuing 30 year olds. Simply making value trades. I look at rebuilding as more going for youth, potential and the like, but I do see your point, and it's one worth considering strongly. Many championships can be won by acquiring 30 year old productive players for unproductive youth. There's a reason the 30 year old WR is still in the league, and it's entirely possible that the 30 year old stays in the league long after the young guy is gone.

Good stuff.

I had assumed rebuilding was making significant roster moves. Thankfully, I've never been at the point in a dynasty league that I've had to make a complete overhaul of a roster. I attribute that to the philosophy I've mentioned above.

Seems to me that you've played it smart.

Even while winning championships, a team is always "rebuilding."

My teams are generally the classic "old" team.

3 or 4 set players are my core.

Build around them, then replace one at a time.

I'm not a big supporter of fire sales and going with all rookies. If works for some people, but mostly sets them back even longer. Eventually, an "old" team will have to do a complete over-haul, but not as soon as most owners think it happens.

Buy old vets, this keeps you in the play-off hunt longer.

One 14 team dynasty league I'm in was formed in 1999. Last year I finally traded away Ricky Williams and this off-season will be Stephan Davis' last (the final remaining player from that 1999 draft).

My squad in May of 2004:

QB Warner, Bulger, Smoker, King, Grossman, B. Johnson, T. Hasselbeck

RB R. Williams, S. Davis, Stewart, Hearst, Staley, Alstott, Levens, Payton, Farmer

WR R. Smith, Chambers, Hilliard, Streets, Looker

PK Vinatieri

DT Den, NYJ

My squad heading into the 2006 draft (early May):

QB Bulger, Frerotte, Rivers, Grossman, Campbell, Walter, Tuiasosopo

RB T. Jones, Benson, Droughns, Gore, Anderson, Blaylock, Staley, S. Davis

WR Chambers, R. Smith, Stallworth, Moulds

PK Vinatieri

DT BUF

As you can see, some of the names are the same. I had a set core of players, lots of them old. In two years time, 2 QBs, 2 RBs, 2 WRs, and 1 PK remain on the squad. That's 7 remaining out of 21 roster spots.

I agree with a previous poster that if you can solidify the QB/WR positions for a few years, it allows you the luxury of outlasting the short RB lifespans (and rookie gambles that don't pan out).

Don't get me wrong, my team sucks right now. It's rebuilding, but only a stud pick away from being a contender again. Getting back to respectibility.... one player at a time.

I generally try not to rebuild, and instead continually try to stay young. The key is to not wait until a RB is 30 years old - you deal him when he's 28. If you pile enough talent up with him, someone will deal you a 24 year old for him. And you've bought yourself 4 years. Use your #1 picks, find some value trades, decent waivers, and invest it all into staying young. Overpay a bit to do so if you have to.

I've ridden Moss for the past 6 seasons, but now I'm trying to trade him while everyone still rates him a top 3-5 dynasty WR. I'm targeting Fitz and thusfar have offered Moss, Brees, and the 2.04 this year for him. He hasn't bitten, I'll keep working it...I'll overpay if I have to, because that buys me 6 years at the #1 WR position.
