First of all, and :bag: (and sorry if this is the wrong place to post this).

My leauge decided to switch to a 10 team Dynasty PPR IDP while I was out of town, and the draft has already started. I have read through much of the "Dynasty League" sticky, but there isn't a lot of general strategy in RE to first year drafting.

Where should defensive players begin to be selected? Where should rookies/backups begin to be selected? Is there a consensus on late first round picks if Manning is available?

Here's a good read.

Don't be the first owner to pick a LB, DB, or DB, IMO.

Cram tonight and learn all you can about the IDP players out there.

Typically speaking WLB's are the best to have followed by the MLB's. You rarely want to have a SLB since they are the ones who cover TE's, thus their tackle numbers are usually down.

But this can vary with the 4-3 or 4-4 defense. Also LB that blitz also are good if sacks are worth MUCH more than just tackles.

Thanks for the replies- 27 round draft: What round would you begin looking at each defensive position? I really have no idea- it could be 6th and it could be 23rd.

In a 25 round 12 team Dynasty draft that we started last Thursday (no time limit between picks) the first defensive player taken (Demeco Ryans) was at 6.3. The next few came in the middle of the 8th round and from that point on the defensive picks started rolling off the board. Hope this helps.

Really if this is a first year Dynasty then it should be an auction....that way the first year draft order does not benefit some random team(s) for years...I would wait until a few come out at each defensive position and then swoop in and take one of the best. More often than not the defensive players are overlooked and they can give you an advantage over those owners that do not take advantage. Also, a lot of the big-time fantasy defensive players are not household names...if they haven't done their research they will take Champ Bailey. Fine...you want Adrian Wilson, Kerry Rhodes, etc. anyway. Also, since this is dynasty obviously look for the young studs...the average fan probably doesn't realize how good they are but you should know Demeco Ryans, Ernie Sims, AJ Hawk, Lofa Tatupu, Patrick Willis, etc.I want a quick tackling machine at LB, a strong safety that might as well be playing LB at DB, and a versatile defensive end that plays the run well but is still a pretty sure thing for 10+ sacks

Also...do a search on Dynasty Rookie to find a thread by "Beto"

Very useful info there on how to rate rookie draft picks in comparison to vets

Thanks Hobbes, Im doing my research now and figuring out who these guys are.

Another question Im coming up with is figuring out the "now" vs "later" approach. For instance, the 1st round is waiting on me (I told them it would be at least a day) and I have a host of RBs to choose from...how do you decide to take the young studs now or not? I could have AP/Bush, or I could go with Portis/Alexander/Westbrook. This is something that will come up each round with each position, and I dont know the answer...or even if there is one.

I'm no expert but you have to decide when your building your team to win. if you going to go real young, go real young and play for next year or two years out. Going to old to snag value, draft alot of veterens who have 2-3 good years left and play for the next two years, but be ready to rebuild. Or just take a nice mixture and of both and play for now. I don't know if this is something others try to do but i pick an average age I wwant to maintain for my team from year to year. It not a big deal for me when i make personel moves but if I am half a year to a full year abouve my target I assess my chances of winning with my current group and then try to trade/add/draft a few younger players.

I would try to build a solid core of young players in the first 7-8 rounds. By young, I mean players in their 20's, or perhaps early 30's (except for RBs). I try to stick to RBs in their 20's, preferably mid 20's or so. Young players don't have to be rookies and 2nd year players. I'm talking proven established talent that you can keep for a few years, thus not having to replace them too soon. Now if an older player falls to a point that he is too good to pass up, then take him. You can have a few older ones here and there, but don't have a lot of them or you will see yourself rebuilding in a year or 2.

Don't overvalue rookies and unproven young players. Don't undervalue older players later in the draft with 2-3 solid years left to play. It doesn't mean you can't take rookies, just don't reach for them. The uber studs like Peterson and Calvin are different.

You don't have to necessarily forget about year 1, but you don't want a team of all old players either.
