Dynasty Startup Auction Question(s) (1 Viewer)

Thanks to FBG, I have decided to turn a redraft league I run into a dynasty. I also want to do an auction draft. I have done neither of these let alone together.

I would like to do a complete auction for all the rounds. The draft is going to be rediculously long no matter the format. Its a 14 team league with 2 qb, 2 rb, 3 wr, 1 te, 1 flex, plus 7 positional IDP's/flex. The number of bench and practice squad spots are still to be decided

If I go full auction, what's the rule of thumb on auction money? How much $ should each team be given to fill out the starting roster and subsequent bench spots? Ive done some "googling" but cant seem to get a feel for the right number.

I plan on including rookies in this startup draft as the time crunch is drawing near. The league will be hosted on MFL. I appreciate any input.

Thanks!

The norm is typically $200 as its all percentage based the amount doesn't really matter. However I just converted my league from keeper/redraft to keeper/auction, with a 10 team league and 20 player rosters I felt like $200 would feel stifling for a lot of first timers to auction leagues, I decided that $300 would allow for more liberal bidding, worked pretty well.

$200 hard cap for each team.

Bid in increments of $1.

Predetermine a nomination order and stick with it.

Are you doing a live or slow auction?

The percentage angle makes perfect sense.

Live auction.

When you say nomination order, do you mean the teams or a player. I assume team from what little i do know so far. Why would one not stick to it?

Thanks for the quick answers.

Teams.

By the end of the auction, when teams are down to their last few dollars, having the power to nominate someone means a lot.

You can pick the nomination order out of a hat. The league I am in does it by order of the previous years results.

I'd push for a slow auction if I was you.

I've just run my second startup using a slow auction and it's an absolute riot.

So my next question is about numer of keepers and bench spots. Id like to have a good amount of depth and the ability to retain some of the depth. I figure 1 player at each position as a minimum. Plus 3 practice squad spots. What are some ideas? I dont want someone to be able to horde talent or at least without hard decisions or penalties. Ive read that benches tend to be deeper in dynasty leagues.

Thanks for the help.

There's a link to the constitution at the bottom.

Thanks for the link! I like that setup quite a bit. I doubt i will use a salary cap as no one including myself has playen in a dynasty let alone a capped one.

I will definitely be borrowing some of those rules AND scoring. Does MFL, which is also where i will be hosting, calculate victory points. I have only got the player scoring system in so far

Yep MFL will do the calculation for you. You just need to make sure to include it as a column on your standings report.

If you're running a 2QB league, you absolutely HAVE to have some form of increasing salary cost or positional limit, otherwise you could very realistically end up with teams without two starting QB's with nothing on the wire at all (our dynasty league has over 50 QB's rostered, for instance). Switching to a QB + Superflex alleviates that somewhat since you'd at least be able to start *someone* instead of getting a zero, but even then, it can quickly devolve.

I agree. I like the idea of superflex and will probably go that route plus a position limit as well. I dont think I m going to ba able to sell the salary cap bit for this league.

I'm think I'm making my next start up a Cap league. I Run 2 Caps leagues, 1 is a 30 man roster with a $500 Salary but its designed to cause high turn over (no cap hits) and its live auction... very fun but time consuming. The other I do is very complex and we use Millions instead of Hundreds, again very fun but very time consuming especially on the commish side.

I'm also part a $500 Salary cap league that I don't run... I love the league and the commish is very good but there parts of the league I would like to change but I know my changes wouldn't be approved by the league, so I have a start up in mind (scoring system built and stuff) but thinking I'm going to take the rule set that 1 league and take what I don't like about it out.

Let me know what you guys think, these are the basics

It would be 14 teams, very deep rosters, Superflex with Best Ball. I'm going to go with $300 / 100 yr cap with a 5% salary increase.

Up to 4 yrs can be assigned to players won in FA Auction / Rookies from Rookie draft will be signed to 4 yr contracts.

Contract Extensions can be given on the final yr of the contract for avg of the top 10 players of the position but must be 3 yrs.

There will be franchise and tender tags

The Cap hits are going to be 10 - 15% but will be times by the amount of yrs left on the contract and that amount will last for the life of the contract

Cents will be used on cap hits (I HATE taking a $1 cap hit on a $1 player), Taxi Squad and IR calculation. Cents will not be used on Salary Increase.

Players aquired from Waiver Wire can be kept for double thier WW cost.

I've found that waiting in auctions and holding your cash gives you a huge advantage later on. You can just hammer teams. Nobody bids against you. You can snipe players left and right.

I waited last year in a redraft auction and ended up with a ton of great players like Jordy and Vjax, who just slid through the cracks.

In that auction this year, I am doing the same. Holding onto my money and no overpaying.

I've found the opposite althuogh I'm talking about slow auctions not live ones.

I came out the gate early and secured Gronk for 7mil (13.2% of Cap) and D Thomas for 7.8 (14.7% of Cap). We don't have a limit on the number of players up at once so most people have money tied up in some targets.

It's coming to an end now but people got crazy at the end. Calvin went for 14.8mil, AJG for 11+, Djax just went for 7.75mil

It really just depends on the auction. Cap makes a huge difference, in an auction without cap it may be better to bid early and get a few top players, while in a dynasty with cap, waiting has extra benefits of being able to keep your value players long term at low salaries.
