Dynasty: Trade review & Who's next? (1 Viewer)

I'm 2-3 in the first year of my first Dynasty League.

10 man league. I focused on WR mostly in the start-up knowing I would likely not compete in year 1. We start 2 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 3 W/R/T, and 1 DEF. Here are deals I have made thus far. Feel free to mention how I fared so far on trading and any roster advice moving forward.

Trade 1: GIVE Ryan Tannehill, Larry Fitzgerald , RECEIVE 2017 first (Ouch)

Trade 2: GIVE Sam Bradford, Jordan Howard, RECEIVE Brandin Cooks

Trade 3: GIVE Doug Martin, Chris Ivory, 2018 2nd RECEIVE 2017 1st, 2018 1st

Current roster:

QB: Kirk Cousins, Jay Cutler, Cody Kessler, Jameis Winston, Mike Glennon (FA Next year)

RB: Peyton Barber, Kenneth Dixon, Kenyan Drake, Duke Johnson, Paul Perkins, Charles Sims, Dwayne Washington, Keith Marshall

WR: Keenan Allen, Odell Beckham, Leonte Carroo, Corey Coleman, Brandin Cooks, Dorial Green-Beckham, T.Y. Hilton, Jeremy Kerley, Adam Thielen

TE: Coby Fleener, Hunter Henry, Austin Hooper, Dennis Pitta DEF: Vikings, Seahawks, Chiefs

2017 picks: 1,1,1,2,3,4 2018 picks: 1,1,3,4

Any thoughts on who I should move next? Recently got Thielen and Kerley off waivers. I am projecting towards the #1 overall due to least potential points. My two others first are like mid to late.

I don't know why you threw in the towel so early for this year.  I am not a big fan of Trade #2 but the other trades are fine for a later in the year once you were out of it kind of situation.  Not prior to week 6.

You need serious RB help.  You have zero proven RB's and the majority are in fringe situations are not likely to be every week starters in the foreseeable future.  I am not a big fan of this team.  I also don't like your QB situation for a 2 QB league.  You could use some help there.  I don't see this team competing anytime soon.

Thanks for the response. Can you elaborate on your thoughts other than it is a bad team?

I am very new to this and I thought my team is very promising for 2017 having 3 firsts (including 1.01) that I may compete for the title. Maybe I am overly optimistic about the rookie production (see below) I will receive next year. I figure I only need marginal production since I have such a strength at WR and above average at TE, DEF.

My team is built around the WR obv, My long-term plan for RB is still Dixon, Duke, Sims who I think are all solid PPR guys plus two of the top 2017 rookies (Fournette, Cook, Chubb, etc).

I do recognize my need at QB and I'm curious how to proceed. I like both Jameis and Kirk as long-term quality starters but I have no depth. Glennon has is FA next year, and I was planning to grab Nassib as well to see how that shakes out.

I guess I am not a proponent of punting any year because the whole point is to win.  I approach a dynasty a little bit different than most but I have had success doing so.  Here are some items that I use to guide me:

  • I evaluate players on a 2 yr window.  Many other dynasty guru's state a 3-5 year window but I have found that this is too long because too many things change over that time.  Free Agency, coaching changes, injuries, poor/great performance, etc really affect value and I find it hard to look past this year and next year.
  • Draft picks are a crap shoot.  For every AP that performs like the hype there are 10 others that flame out.  Most other managers seem to value draft picks much more than I do so I am able to use them to stock my team with 2nd or 3rd year players that have been in the NFL and are ready to emerge due to usage or change of scheme.  That is who I tend to target.  But you have to do your research and see what players have a change in their situation that will let them explode.
  • Don't shy away from older, productive players like Fitzgerald.  You can usually get them for cheap and they are key to competing year in and year out because.
  • Don't get in the habit of building for "next year".  Next year will never come that way. All owners I have seen that do that tend to never compete because next year will be the year.
Hope this helps.
