If you guys could have either one as a stash with upside which one do you take Smith or Davis?

Forget about current roster, etc. Not important at this point.

Who do you choose and why?

I tried for both this week... only landed Davis. I don't know what Davis' long-term value may be, but I don't really have a TE2, so he is a decent upside gamble, imo.

I had Smith first on my claims list, FWIW. Davis was my #2 choice... and at least I got him.

Seems

like we have seen smith for a while, and he's not been so hot, unless you're banking on a Vernon Davis like turn around. Fred Davis seemed like he did well, but since Cooley is only out approximately a month, Fred is no lock to continue starting. Stash? For a few years, if you think he's top level talent, Fred. Back up QB are easy to find

In deep leagues I had Snelling 1st and Alex Smith 2nd. I didn't even consider Davis.

A lot of people on the Amendola train too.

Fred Davis really struggles with his blocking. They showed a couple replays of him attempting to block on MNF and it was ugly. Always start your team D and DEs against the skins if Davis gets named the starter. I'm hoping he puts up a couple good fantasy games so I can sell high.

Davis' lack of blocking ability will likely result in him having little to no staying power in fantasy--he won't eat into cooley's touches when he gets back or anything. However, I think it may help his numbers in the short term as A. They'll probably keep him in to block less frequently than they did cooley as he provides little utility on such plays and B. The horrid O-line coupled with the fact they're not keeping a TE in to block will increase the likelihood of campbell having to dump off (likely to the TE).IMO since they really have no other options Davis should be a mid-to-low-end TE1 til Cooley gets back, but I don't think he has much value at all long-term for dyno purposes.
