It's Official -- Vick back for Week 3

Goodell: Vick eligible for Week 3

Eagles quarterback Michael Vick will be eligible for the third game, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said today.

Goodell met with Vick and coach Andy Reid earlier today for about 45-50 minutes.

"He has a better feel for the challenges ahead of him," Goodell said during a meeting with reporters at his New York office. "I was pleased with our discussion."

Goodell said he thinks Vick is "making real progress."

Vick is scheduled to play tonight in the preseason finale against the Jets in a substantial role. He then will be able to play against Kansas City on Sept. 27.

Asked why he decided on Week 3, Goodell said, “It’s a step process. I don’t want him to be put in a position where he’s overwhelmed. I’m not at all concerned about the football standpoint. I am interested in what we can do to help him be successful going forward. At the end of the day, it’s a gut check.”

As to why he has been so involved with Vick and why he has been willing to go the extra mile, Goodell said, “There’s so much emphasis on the discipline in the media. But the reality is the resources and what we can do to help men make better decisions. With his unique circumstances, being in jail for 2 years …. Hopefully we can have a success story here that will be good for society in general and good for the NFL.”

Goodell said the fact that Vick signed with the Eagles was not a factor, but he acknowledged that he had spoken with more than one team about their interest in Vick.

Goodell has lost a ton of respect in my eyes by doing this.
Why??? Vick was jailed for his actions and paid his debt. I am a dog lover, 2 Golden Ret., and was willing to hear the guy out. He seems to be heading in the right direction and is very remorseful of his actions. I hope he does well for us as Eagles fans and for himself as a human being.

I'm estimating an Eagles implosion by week 6.. won't take long for the toolbags in the Linc to learn how to chant 'Vick Vick Vick'.. McNabb will be  High drama will ensue....

I don't even know why I open threads having to do with Vick. Too many idiots abound.

I think it will be a bitter pill to swallow for all those who can't get past Vick's "past" when the Eagles win the Super Bowl and Vick played a part (big or small) in helping them do so. Even then, I think most of you who have an issue with Vick playing pro football for the Eagles, still won't acknowledge he may have turned his life around.

You know what they say about small minds.......very small minds..........

Local animal rights activists have opted not to protest the player, but to use Vick's arrival in Philadelphia to spotlight their work and have asked the Eagles to support them.

The team has been receptive, inviting several groups to a meeting at their practice facility a few days before Vick played to discuss ways to help, including the possibility of financial support.

you mean the kind of minds that drown, electrocute, and beat dogs to death? F Michael Vick- he's back in the NFL, and hopefully he'll turn a negative into a postive, but that doesn't mean us "small minded" people have to support him.. he's a scumbag- always was, always will be.. just because he's been given a gift to rturn to the NFL doesn't change that fact..

Not even that....(although that is bad).... It boggles the mind that an organization like the NFL, that is so concerned about the integrity of their game that they would go to court to block legal sportbook gambling in Delaware, would allow a man who was brought up on RICO charges, who ran an illegal interstate gambling ring and associated with big time illegal gamblers, back into the league.

sorry but that's ridiculous, Vick did not associate with "big" time gamblers. the gambling on dog fighting does not attract real gamblers, it's basically gang vs gang betting which in the grand scheme of things is small. I've read a lot on dogfighting and 10k is considered a HUGE bet in dogfighting. that's peanuts for big gamblers and those kind of gamblers don't mess around with dog fighting.

He didn't run an illegal interstate gambling ring? Hey...like I said .....for a league that is so concerned with their integrity that they moved to block legalized gambling I guess it's no big deal. Just another example of what a joke the NFL is becoming in regards to hypocrisy.

link? Do the Feds lock people up for not associating with "big time gamblers?"

Vick has 10 touches for -23 yards tonight. This guy has lost what he once had, 2 years out of the game, what did people expect.
2nd game and a couple of weeks of practices after 2 years out of the game, what did people expect?I don't know how good he'll be this year, but now doesn't seem like the time make that judgement.

Yes, the amount of the bets is irrelevant as far as the Feds are concerned. Betting illegally on a banned sport was the issue.Sorry but dog fighting doesn't bring in big gamblers. It's nickel and dime betting in the grand scheme of things.

I'd love us to go to the 'bowl again, but I'm not so sure that Vick is going to help us or hurt us - I can think of valid arguments for both sides, and I think it remains to be seen. I personally was hoping for the 6 week suspension to give the team more time to gel together before Vick is eligible, but I'm sure I'm in the minority on that one. That being said, I do think that Vick has paid his debt, and I do think he is legitimately trying to turn his life around. I think it's going to take a while (and a whole lot of volunteer work) for him to convince the majority of folks of that, though.

vick's statline tonite........................

7 of 10 for 26 yards with a pick..................... 2 fumbles and 1 lost

6 rushers for 25 yards and a TD
